No one really talking about his goal yesterday. MOTD were only interested in Mason when they were doing the analysis.
I thought this was a world class goal! Absolutely curled it into the top corner crashing it off the underside of the bar. Incredible goal. It actually starts well outside the post as well, and curls in. Superb.
And then looking at the stats it’s his best ever season hitting 20 goals in his preferred position.
Seems LVG played him through the middle in his first season when he was 18 (same age as Mason) and he hit 17 goals. Then Jose mis used him for 2 and a half seasons and he seems like he’s back on the right path no under Ole.
Can be a frustrating player at times, doesn’t seem like he works too hard but there is absolutely no doubting his talent. Still a good few games left in the season too, should be aiming for 25 goals.Do we need to buy a striker in the summer?
July 5, 2020 at 11:40 am #1854457I think Ole is the modern type of manager players like Pogba and Martial need.
Striker isn’t priority this summer. Right wing and CB should be top of the list. Bringing in a top class RW allows Greenwood to play as a striker more.
That said, once Ighalo leaves we’ll only have three forwards left. Ole may wait and see how Mellor and Hugill (that deal confirmed yet?) developJuly 5, 2020 at 11:47 am #1854459I suspect we will go for Sancho in Jan when he only has 18 mths left on his contract unless somebody signs him b4 but I don’t see any club paying 100m plus for him?
July 5, 2020 at 11:58 am #1854462An awful lot will depend on whether we are in the Champions league:
– Secure via league
– Secure via Europa win
– Secure via 5th and pray City ban is upheldFinishing 3rd or 4th and winning Europa or FA Cup would be a very nice way to end the season.
I would go for a CB first and foremost.
July 5, 2020 at 12:35 pm #1854469Does anyone think we still need a top notch central midfielder along with the other positions? WE currently have Pogba, Tommy, Fred and MAtic who is getting on. I still think we need somebody here, somebody not as good as Pogba but better then the rest due to cost.
If yes, anyone in mind?
As for Martial it was a great goal.
July 5, 2020 at 12:41 pm #1854472We still need quality throughout the team. But RW is the priority for me. That gives us proper options up top.
Other positions depends on money and who is available.
Building a football team is one of those things that is never really finished anyway. Liverpool should bring players in this summer.
July 5, 2020 at 12:50 pm #1854475Don’t need a striker martial is the man for that position. Considering he missed what was it 2 months of the season and still hit 20 goals ?
Unfortunate for him he career was derailed by mourinho (we will see the same thing with kane)
For me 3 key positions we need 2 quality centre backs and top draw right winger to allow mason to compete with martial
Preferably a left back but I think that can wait for the summer after. Two top draw centre backs will allow us to play further up the pitch and allow pogba and Bruno to do the damage like how Liverpool play
July 5, 2020 at 3:04 pm #1854514I think I said “great goal” at the time. Still a lazy fucker who doesn’t do enough for me though. I’m still of the opinion we need two alongside Pogba and Fernandes in midfield, which leaves two up front. Take your pick from Martial, Greenwood, Rashford, Ighalo (and perhaps Sancho?). Not sure where that leaves your mate Dan James happy 😂. The other way is a back three and two wing backs, but given we’re struggling for two decent CBs and our full backs don’t naturally get forward, that’s a non starter with our current personnel. But we definitely need a new CB, to go with the numerous bad ones we’ve already got.
July 5, 2020 at 3:19 pm #1854524Oh JM.
July 5, 2020 at 3:28 pm #1854528Hopefully this will be the last season for Mata,Andy and Matic, which should allow us to bring another midfielder, someone who can protect the back 5,but who is much better than Fred and MCT.
In defence we hope to offload Smalling,Jones and Rojo, and hopefully get a decent offer for Bailly and/or Lindeflop, too, which then should make it possible to sign a classy CD.
FFS,nearly forgot MessiLingard.July 5, 2020 at 5:31 pm #1854566Sorry to break it @JM but apparently the club is in negotiations with Matic. Also, I don’t know how playing 3/5 at the back would accommodate Bruno and Pogba. Although if we played 3-5-2 your mate Dan James would probably make a good right wing back 😉
July 5, 2020 at 10:20 pm #1854642I think Ole said yesterday that this is a key summer and we have to make “one or 2 important decisions” in the transfer market. I think that means we’ll bring in at least 2 first team players and maybe 1 or 2 squad players as well. Seems the likes of Jones and Lingard are done.
Could be an interesting few months ahead…July 8, 2020 at 10:47 am #1855443Anthony Martial has all the trappings to be a world class striker. It’s great to see that Solskjaer has made him work on his hold up play and his strength with back to goal – similar to what Mason Greenwood did over the lock down.
Martial’s goal against Bournemouth is only a function of his confidence levels – he has the technical ability to do that in every game.
I don’t think we need a striker more than we need a speedy sweeping CB and a long term solution for the defensive midfield position in the mould of Wilfried Ndidi or Ngolo Kante. The next position for attention would be the right wing in my opinion. All of this is assuming Pogba stays on.
July 8, 2020 at 11:11 am #1855457@jm1502. Every statistic before Bruno Fernandes joined pointed to Martial being a “lazy fucker” and it has to be said that he perhaps was a “lazy fucker” not making sprints in behind because he had a bunch of unimaginative midfielders behind him who wouldn’t see and a quality pass after seeing his run – that is why he was dropping deep to collect the ball and then try dribble past the entire defense to score a worldie.
Pogba is another example, he’s now playing with a smile on his face and he’s happy to hang back to let Bruno Fernandes do the creative work. The signing of Bruno cannot be understated, he has raised the level of every player in the squad with his intense work ethic, his incredible technical ability, and his clear leadership abilities.
July 9, 2020 at 9:11 am #1855729Who would be your 3 summer signings, Hatters?
November 22, 2020 at 1:44 pm #1894681I like Martial as a player but I’m not sure whether he’s a title-wining number 9. I think Cavani offers something different with his movement and hold-up play. I would rotate them with each other for the CF position this season and then try to sign Haaland.
November 22, 2020 at 1:51 pm #1894683He epitomises this team under Ole for me, brilliant one week and absolutely shite the next. That said the “brilliant one week” hasn’t happened yet this season!
Any other striker at a top club would be dropped at this stage, but there’s no chance Ole will change his team even when some of them are in the worst form of their careers! -
