Is this a chicken or egg situation?
Mourinho has said that Martial’s performances have been disappointing and that if he listened more to the Special One and less to his agent then he’d be doing much better.
Given that Jose doesn’t necessarily have the best record for blooding young talent, should we be asking is Martial’s attitude the problem, or does Martial have a problem because he feels under utilised by Jose?
OR, is Martial finding it hard to come to terms with the fact that he’s playing less this season than last year, and he’s more on the wing this year than he was and as such isn’t scoring as many goals and has the hump because his squad number was given to the Zlatan (which lets be honest, probably wasn’t the most confidence inspiring thing to happen to a young player but should he be able to shake it off knowing Zlatan isn’t going to be around for long and he’ll get it back in a couple of seasons at which point he can make it his own if he’s so inclined)?
Like I said, chicken or egg?

Thought he’d turned a corner after the Boro game then was astonished to see him benched. Summat’s afoot but ultimately it is down to the player whether they succeed or not and to take more personal responsibility. If he was flying in training and busting a gut he might make himself undroppable. If they hadn’t given Ibrahimovic his number 9 he might be scoring goals for fun. If he’d kept his pecker in his pocket he might still have his family and childhood sweetheart still with him. You can’t spend your life wondering what if and feeling sorry for yourself though as in two years time you’ll be playing mid table Ligue Un and nobody will remember you.

Why is Mourhino picking on Martial though? Besides, he is not the only who who’s form has been disappointing if that’s Jose’s beef with him. I read Martial was picked out for his performance against Liverpool the other day for playing badly, I hope Jose accorded Mata with the same reaction for his performance against Stoke. I guess Jose knows best .

Jose just doesnt fancy him – just like he didnt really fancy lukaku or de bryune which his fair enough he is the manager

Martial will be off in the summer and over the next 2-3 years he will develop into a true top top player. I hope Mourinho isnt thinking of replacing him with griezman

If it was me I would look to build a new team around Martial Pogba and Greizman

I hope things change because it would be devastating to see Martial leave – one thing i dont get is why does mournho rate lingard higher than martial? is it because he is a better defender?

I’m not sure I’m convinced about Martial either. Began with a bang when he first joined but seems to have gradually fizzled out to me. Not sure he has enough fire in the belly or, frankly, enough in the locker. Agree with others though, there are plenty that are worse.

The reason Mourinho comments on Martial is that he is asked about him constantly just as he was constantly quizzed on Mkhitaryan when he was out the team. When he subbed Mata off in the community shield he was then quizzed about his future as well.

Fact is the pressers (and rs83) have no dramatic anti-United story to tell anymore and they are digging deep to find one.

Martial is 21 and is going nowhere, the club and Mourinho have made that patently clear.

TS7 is closer to the truth for me. Martial lost the number 9 shirt at around the same time when his wife and daughter left him after his infidelity. Any man with two brain cells to rub together would know which of the two would have most impact on a young footballer’s form.

I am convinced about Martial’s world class natural talent but Jose’s job is to win us games which he is doing. Martial’s job is to focus on his football, win a place in the team, and be a constant attacking threat – he is not doing his job.

Martial would be best advised to put his pecker back in his pants, make amends with his wife, close down his Twitter account (and his silly branding websites), and focus on his FOOTBALL.

The branding and the rest of the guff comes after proving you are a world class player.

@hatters not sure how am digging up an anti united story? this has been doing the rounds for weeks so there is something to it and for Jose to say martial hasnt taken his chances just doesn’t make sense.

He was brilliant against boro and effectively won us that game, so you would have thought he would now be given a decent run like Jose has given other players. But the next game he was dropped, why is that?

Jose fancies lingard over Martial thats fair enough because he is the manager – the only way Martial can prove he has the ability to develop into a world class player is if he is given sufficient game time.

If he isnt going to get that opportunity at united then i dont blame him if he wants to move and play elsewhere. If he flops then Jose was right – however if he does develop into a world class player then questions will be asked

Oh Martial has abilities more than enough. José doesnt go well with every player. Its like the old story about the frog and the scorpion.

@rs83. Fair enough mate. My post was aimed at you because I believe you have an agenda against Mourinho (considering the harsh criticism I have seen from you in the past).

Your post is just about correct on all accounts.

Martial was dropped after he played well against Boro and I don’t agree with that decision from Mourinho, I also don’t agree with him leaving Martial out altogether against Stoke.

Our attacking midfield positions are highly contested though with Rooney, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Martial, and Rashford all vying for a position while Pereira is impressing in Spain. It’s not easy for Mourinho to pick players in the 3 positions behind Ibrahimovic and to keep everyone happy.

One can only hope that Martial went to Paris last weekend in an effort to win back his wife. There’s a reason why Fergie used to push his players into marrying, it gives the stability that any successful man needs.

Sorry hatters, Martial shouldn’t be struggling to get picked ahead of a fat Rooney, slow Mata, bang average Lingard or young and inexperienced Rashford. Truth is, the guy plays well occasionally and, more often, not so well. If the rumours are true, the guy cost a shitload and should be performing better than he has. The jury’s out for me.

From Mourinho’s presser today I get the impression that Martial will play tonight. Mourinho said he was given time off as with rotation due to so many matches this month some players will be completely rested.
I think Mourinho knows that Martial has talent, no question. I think he wants him to show it consistently.

Martial has never been the same since Zlatan was given the #9 shirt when Martial thought it was his.
The biggest problem facing Martial is the presence of Zlatan. So JM has to decide who is most valuable for the future of UTD. Martial or Zlatan? One or the other.

The blame must lie with JM. Martial has the talent and potential. Its not a case of making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. JM has to make a silk purse out of silk. Its the manager’s responsibility to nurture and develop young talent, to motivate players and where necessary keep them on track.

As for chicken and egg, JM took away Martial’s shirt number before the PL had even started. That should make it clear what came first.

Martial is a player with a world class potential.
He needs time to adapt to Jose style of play.
Unfortunately Jose is not giving him the chance to do so.
The lad needs to play every match like Pogba to find his form back.
Hope he returns against Wigan on Sunday.

    For me it’s simple.

Martial is one of those players who needs 100% backing from his manager. If he feels any doubt he goes off the ball. Martial is the biggest case of man management and I hate the way Jose is hanging out to dry in public as I believe with his character it will have a negative effect. Dropping after a good performance against Middlesborough was a silly decision in my opinion and back fired as he was poor when brought back into the team against Liverpool.

At the same time Martial needs to take some responsibility himself he can’t say he is playing out of position as wide left is where he played at Monaco and most of the season under LVG.

If I am in Jose position and weighing up the competition for wide places I go with who I think will be the best when they’re are on top form not who is the best based on a purple patch.

    Left wing

    Rashford
    Martial
    Rooney

    Right Wing

    Mkhitarian
    Mata
    Lingard

That’s my pecking order for wide positions

Lingard had loan spells at Birmingham, Leicester and I believe Derby – he was not deemed good enough for those clubs and was sent straight back. So why is he good enough for us even if he is classed as a squad player?

I honestly dont see what he offers apart from being a local lad who has come through the youth set up
