I’m struggling to remember a more disappointing signing. We’ve definitely had more disastrous signings, definitely had far worse players, but for me Keita is right up the top of the list as one if not the most disappointing. We paid 55m for him and had to wait a whole season to finally see him in a liverpool shirt. He is nearly always injured….no joke….we’ve seen very little of the combative, forward driving, goal scoring midfielder we thought we were signing. And on the rare occasions he shows a glimmer of that player that must be buried in there somewhere…..he gets injured again. I’m not blaming him for last nights match, they were all bad, I’m just disappointed because I think I’ve finally accepted that he’s not going to ever be anything more than a squad player for us if we keep him and he’s probably dropped behind Jones in the pecking order now.
April 7, 2021 at 11:54 am #1940833Yup. And before the game last night, Klopp was saying how his training performances could no longer be ignored and he felt he had to play him. It’s a real shame because we desperately need that kind of player in midfield. But I think enough is enough now.
April 7, 2021 at 12:03 pm #1940838He’s played 42mins of football this year prior to this game.
He’s then hooked after 42mins last night.
All well good Klopp saying he’s been performing well in training but is he up to match speed? Seemingly not and this should have been found out before an away CL QF v Madrid. He’s one of a few players that’s on the injury prone list that needs to be phased out. Apparently Leicester might be interested and we’re looking £30mil.
April 7, 2021 at 12:08 pm #1940840Well if Leicester really willing to pay that amount, we should grab it with open arms
April 7, 2021 at 12:11 pm #1940842Naby + 20mil for Ndidi would be a heck of a deal.
April 7, 2021 at 2:18 pm #1940893Get rid of him at this stage. Was delighted when we finally got him but he’s Injurrd far to much
Had everything to be a top player but he’s been jurgen worst signing for the fee paid
He’s done nothing in 3 seasons
Good luck
April 7, 2021 at 9:26 pm #1941040Without a doubt, Klopp’s worst signing alright Sean. If any team is willing to pay 30m for Keita, we’ve got to take it, but I seriously doubt there’s any truth to that. What would Leicester think they can do with a player who’s body can’t hack PL fitness standards? I’d be surprised if we get more than 15m for him, 20m cause Edwards, at the very outside. To pay more would be total recklessness but some clubs do make some rather bizarre transfer decisions (Bournemouth).
April 7, 2021 at 11:48 pm #1941088Fitness aside, I just think he is not suited to Liverpool. Very little of your play is focused on the midfield. Most teams around the world use their midfield as a thoroughfare to play football. Liverpool don’t, they go down the sides. You guys use your midfield players as pressers and shields for the defense. Was quite baffled when you guys signed Thiago tbh, had me thinking Klopp was going to change his tactics but he hasn’t at all.
If he can stay fit and joins a more suitable club, I can see him becoming a world class player. Actually, ManU could do with a player like him.April 8, 2021 at 6:44 am #1941092Foxy.. I believe we discussed this a while back. 1 thing a lot of people tend to forget was that Naby was signed before we changed our system but remained in Germany for a year. By the time he came in, we had already changed our system to use our FBs more offensively. He was bought for a system we ended up not using. Also, the fact that he had a full year, yet came in still without knowing the language just made things harder for him. Time we cut our losses with him. I’d rather see Jones get more game time instead of wasting that space on someone this unreliable. As for Thiago, I believe he was signed to get the ball out wide and make switches quicker. The fact that he could also play it through the middle would give us an extra option should we have needed it.
April 8, 2021 at 8:17 am #1941103I think Naby’s body just cannot cope with the step up in intensity that our style and subsequent training demands. He also doesn’t come across as someone that is willing to put in the extra effort to overcome such problems.
Whoever is interested in him we will need to take a big hit and even then I am not confident we will get a buyer due to his wage demands. His reputation is low in germany due to a few attitude and off the pitch incidents so he won’t be heading back. He’s on what 120k a week? Not many will match that for a semi-permenantly injured player.
April 8, 2021 at 8:29 am #1941107He may be suited to a less intense league or a less intense team.
We know how bad Lovrens injury issues were and now he’s joined Zenit he rarely misses a game.April 8, 2021 at 11:11 am #1941166Keita is Klopp’s only big signing that has flopped, and that’s mainly because of persistent injuries, otherwise I believe he’s a good player.
However every manager cannot get it right every time with their big signings, and there are numerous examples of top players flopping when they come to the PL e.g. Kepa, the world’s most expensive goalkeeper or Veron, the PL record signing at the time.
That just shows you how good Klopp and Edwards record is at signing big players.
Let Rodgers sign him for £30m, which would be a good deal for us, problem is he just might go on to become a big success there, as Rodgers is no mug, and knows talent when he sees it
April 8, 2021 at 11:59 am #1941181Origi
April 8, 2021 at 12:01 pm #1941187or was he just prior to Klopp?
April 8, 2021 at 12:25 pm #1941194Rodgers signed origi for Liverpool foxy
April 8, 2021 at 12:51 pm #1941203The list of Rodgers dodgy buys is significant.
April 8, 2021 at 12:59 pm #1941210I’m not necessarily endorsing the validity of this Twitter account that does tactical analysis of PL and EUFA games, and it’s easy to cherry pick snapshots of play to ‘prove’ your point, but worth a read
Naby Keïta wasn’t just hooked for his play in possession as many have suggested, but he also wasn’t fulfilling the defensive responsibilities required of Klopp’s right-sided 8
Often Trent would be left 2v1 with Mendy & Vinícius because Keïta wasn’t positioning himself correctly pic.twitter.com/2vVeJQE9Oi

April 8, 2021 at 1:15 pm #1941215I don’t think Origi is a flop per se given transfer fee of £10 million. He has averaged 1 goal per 180 mins for us in the EPL.
April 8, 2021 at 4:34 pm #1941287Great flop!! If Leicester gives 30 mil get rid of him.
April 8, 2021 at 4:54 pm #1941296Keita has many qualities that should have made him an important member of the squad, coming in when everybody’s fit and doing a good job. Hendo, Fab and Gini would be ahead of him but he would have been a great choice to give the three some rest.
He is just unlucky, in a relative term as he will end up with 15M+ at the end of his career. I remember he was bossing the game at the Camp Nou before Rakitic took him out with a scorpion or scissor kick. Then it went pear shaped for one reason or another but I feel he was gearing to go to the next level at this point but the Croatian stopped him in mid air. -
