Penultimate group game before our tricky final match away at Salzburg in a couple of weeks so we go into this crucial tie needing a win to end the group series, top.
Not much luck against Napoli and definitely our CL bogey team. We’ve never won or scored in Naples but Napoli haven’t beaten us at home in two previous attempts. Last season Mo scored the only goal and oh boy, how it could have should have been 1-1 and the end of our CL season with ‘that save’ by Alisson from Milik in the dying seconds. I’d just finally convalesced from Gudjohnsen’s miss in the semi final 14 years ago or whatever it was and now I have to deal with this. Thanks! Our other previous home tie against them was in the Europa Cup with Gerrard scoring a late, quick fire hattrick following Lavezzi’s first half strike. We tamely bowed out of the competition in the last 16 to Braga that season losing 1-0 on aggregate over 2 legs (should have won it at home; both Carroll and Skrtel had 2 golden chances each).
Despite our problems against Wednesday’s visitors we meet them at a game time with our current winning form and their current not winning form. Their last win was in the CL away at Salzburg a month ago which has been their only win anywhere on the road in 2 months. 5 draws and 1 loss in their last 6 games dropping them to 7th in Serie A.
But they do have some top players, Lozano (one to watch), Insigne, Mertens and the aforementioned Milik so we’re gonna have to be on our game to ensure success.
The line-up will likely include Mo for Origi and maybe Keita or Ox for someone in mid but seeing our usual mid trio start would not surprise me at all (hence Hendo coming off yesterday). Maybe Gomez for Trent but Gomez worries me greatly at right back (as I’ve mentioned before) if fact yesterday I caught our entire back line ball watching on numerous occasions in particular the Zaha shot late on that so should have gone in (good, strong set frame and positioning from Alisson contributing to that). Trent tho annoyed me yesterday with his 1v1 defending. All you have to do against him is show his inside and then quickly his out and you’ve got him. So predictable. He NEEDS to improve his 1v1 defending, end of.
Success, is, what I think we’ll get this week and win this 2-0. A clean sheet! Yay but conceding would not surprise me (our last ‘shut out’ was 2 months ago at Sheff U).November 24, 2019 at 4:25 pm #1801845
A must win game so as to allow us to focus mainly on the League.
We have lots of options with many players who are fresh and raring to go, such as Gomez, Milner, Keita, Origi and Lallana. Even Shaqiri might be ready.
I’d rest Henderson, and maybe even Wijnaldum, for Saturday, as Fabinho is suspended for that game.
Time to teach Napoli a lessonNovember 24, 2019 at 5:33 pm #1801893
I fancy us strongly here. We should have been at least 5-0 up before Alison save last year. We battered them and mane missed so many chances.
We have to win this so we can rest players againest Salzburg
Wouldn’t fancy going there needing to winNovember 25, 2019 at 8:39 am #1802017
Sean I agree!!November 25, 2019 at 5:32 pm #1802183November 25, 2019 at 10:06 pm #1802235
yeah the owner fucked up monumentally there, lets hope their slump continues, my guess is that Anfield is going to get to them and we are gonna take the whole three points… I reckon Salah will start but it might be an idea to give him another game to recover, he has been kicked pretty badly on his last two games and sadly that seems to be the way to deal with him right now… We need to protect our players, if we see a bad tackle lets call out for the card because none of our players are allowed to do so!November 26, 2019 at 7:42 am #1802266
Huge game. What a huge block of ganes coming up
Exciting times chumNovember 26, 2019 at 11:30 am #1802343
Our next small run of league games isn’t that bad and I’m hoping, particularly with the home games, we can get the game wrapped up with 20/30 left and then make appropriate subs.
With Napoli is disarray and us being at home this presents a great opportunity to confirm top spot in the group and then rest players for the Salzburg game.
It’s a game every 3/4 days for a few weeks so management of the squad will be very important.November 26, 2019 at 3:09 pm #1802434
Klopp saying Salah should be good for tomorrow night.
Bar Matip, it’s looking like we’ll go for our tried and tested most trusted team of…
TAA, Lovren, VVD, Robbo
Hendo, Fabinho, Wij
Salah, Firmino, ManéNovember 27, 2019 at 3:03 am #1802554
We’ll win this 2-1November 27, 2019 at 12:56 pm #1802696
We must win even by one goal!!November 27, 2019 at 7:05 pm #1802830
Alisson, Gomez, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Mane, Salah, Firmino.
Subs: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Origi.
Good to see Shaq back in the squad and no Insigne for them.November 27, 2019 at 8:55 pm #1802854
There may be some turbulence there at the moment. But they have been able to hold on to top players, like Koubilay, Mertens, Manolas for so long.
It’s a good club, with a good manager.
They are also one of the best teams in the world at defending crosses, in my opinion. Which is bad news for us, because when the opponent sits deep we bombard the penalty area with crosses.
1-0 down at half time, and getting back in it, is going to be tough.November 27, 2019 at 8:59 pm #1802855
I think we will turn it around second half but this is one of those games (like the United game) where it’s crying out for a proper number 10.November 27, 2019 at 9:03 pm #1802856
We are a goal behind again. Very subdued crowd which is not common these days
Thought it was a free on vvd for their goal.November 27, 2019 at 9:56 pm #1802866
Now we must not lose at Austria. It was not a good result!!!
A creative midfielder is missing…November 27, 2019 at 10:00 pm #1802867
A fair result. Mane and Mo extremely quiet (doubled up on them). Final ball wasn’t there. It happens. Got to get a result now at Salzburg and they’re a decent team.November 27, 2019 at 10:02 pm #1802868
Very flat performance. Napoli got their tactics spot on.
We are going to have some performances like this but we will bounce back sat
We need to start getting a few clean sheets together.November 27, 2019 at 10:04 pm #1802869

Piss poor performance from an application and intensity point of view, didn’t create very much, way too much sideways and backwards for which you have to give some credit to Napoli, they came not to lose and they didn’t but how fucking abysmal was that prick with the whistle, for the first 80 minutes he didn’t give us a fucking thing (not that we deserved much) I swear he had an issue with Mane every time he possibly could he gave a foul against him even when it was Mane that was fouled, disappointing night, we’ll just have to do it in Salzburg.
