We will not beat utd. I said a few weeks ago it be ourselves that would be our downfall

We don’t look solid. We look weak as a team and we are mentally frail conceding late goals.

    Ridiculous to take thisgo off

Mak totally agree about Winji. Over played and not contributing

We have been dreadful since Christmas. We don’t deserve top 4.

Klopp has had an absolute shocker. Get the season over with. Get fans back in and played bsck and we go again

That’s consecutive matches that we concede late on when we were ahead. The forwards had chances to bury it, but Chelsea recently and Leicester had many 1-0 victories when they won the league, and we did it also last season.
It’s the best scenario when we bury our chances but the next best thing is not to concede and in that respect Klopp has some limitations. Newcastle players were just defending in the second half and were waiting for the last 6-7 minutes to make their relative freshness count to launch attacks. Our midfield had worked hard up to that time and they needed fresh legs and a more compact formation to help them.
What I saw instead was Jones trying to launch a counter attack on the half way line and he lost the ball setting the tone for the last minutes. He’s a very young player and I’m not blaming him, rather laying it at the feet of the coaching staff who should have made it clear that the emphasis was on defence and protection of the lead.
Watching Real at Anfield I knew we wouldn’t score because all men were behind the ball in the last 10 minutes, even Benzema was deep in his own half. Keeping the ball should have been the objective says Klopp but the players were knackered, so this was a tall order, it would have been much better to be compact and have enough bodies to prevent the opposition from threading the ball to approach Alisson. As I said earlier, Williams on for one of the forwards would have helped.

Thanks Razor, Mak & Sean for your replies.

Razor.. Wiji fights well for the ball & scurries forward then a simple pass so actually nothing comes of it, my point is no matter how one defends Wiji his no assists are a disgrace, even Alisson has more.

Razor & Mr Mak. Jota, we will have to see what happens in the future & stand by my assessment of him, will make a useful sub., though.

Sean. The days of me saying that I don’t have to post because you say it all for me have past, you were a realist, still a good poster though.

Being 77 I don’t seem to want to post nowadays, can’t be bothered arguing , but will come back to apologise if Jota makes it.

    Cheers to all.

How many assists has Thiago in the last year and a half?

I never understood the assists debate. Or the goals scored one to be honest. Last season how many assists did our midfield get between them? No many I’d wager, yet it was the finest season our club has ever produced. All the midfield contributed massively. I didn’t care that Firmino scored less than what other number nines score, he contributed to the team. Its all about the team and the only stats that are important are the ones told by the league table.

This season is a write off. It’s been a perfect storm in terms of a shit show for us, but we are only a few recoveries away from being that great team of last season. Players are now obviously a bit older and maybe it’s time to refresh certain areas and strengthen the back up options but that’s just part of normal progression in football. Let’s file this season away somewhere where we can just forget it happened and go again next season we our top players back and hopefully fans too.

But he was arrguably our best player yesterday. Not his fault that the front 3/4 failed to take their chances

    That’s 1 game Kopite.
Take a look at how many assists Thiago has between last season and this.

My issue is why take off our best player on the day. Our game management yesterday was poor.

Indeed, Klopp left a disinterested player on the field and that player wasn’t interested enough to track his runner for their goal and left him completely unmarked and unchallenged in the box. I’m not sure what he’s expecting from someone who already has 1 foot out of the door yet he makes him the captain. He did shed some light on the logic behind the high line yesterday though. He said something to the effect of defending too deep gives the opponent more chances to win the ball and the 2nd ball further up the pitch. Without a player who could control the air, deeper defending was always a risk, as it came to pass. Fair enough, if your defenders are so good that they can’t be beaten on the ground either which is not the case. Really should have sent on an extra defender once it became apparent that we were no longer attacking.

No the issue is people criticising a player for not making any assists and not understanding the role of our midfielders in Klopps system.
Just because you’re a midfielder doesn’t mean you should be scoring and assisting.
As far as I’m aware between last season and this Thiago has zero assists. He’s scored 3 goals in that period. In the same period Gini has scored 9. However when he plays for Holland and asked to play a different role in the team he scores regularly.
Gini has been absolutely flogged to death these last 2 seasons. He only has to play one more game this season to equal his 47 games for the entirety of last season.
He’ll go down as a LFC legend.

That theory by Klopp is somewhat self disproved because we can’t score goals against team that defend in numbers close to their GK.

Looking at the bigger picture though we were lucky to get a player like VVD who can go on for 90 minutes while staying on the half way line for most of the game. Gomez also must be commended, as well as Matip who enabled us to bring some big trophies into the cabinet.

VVD signed because of Klopp’s aura so I’m not putting into question his positive impact on the club.

If City and Chelsea reach the CL final, does that mean that we can still qualify for the CL if we somehow nick 5th?

Just to give an indication how much our performances and decisions taken in Jan/Feb hurt us. We were beaten 6 times in the league in those 2 months. If we’d only just drawn those 6 games, never mind winning some, just drawn, we’d be sitting 3rd right now.

I´m not throwing in the towel just yet… The league is full of surprises this season even though some things could be predicted…

Its evident that we don´t have the same drive as last season but there are a number of factors behind that, one thing is we have missed some big players this season… In more than one way…

Like we missed Fabinho even though he was in the first eleven playing as a centreback, we have also missed Henderson every time he has been out and our 2nd most influential player in the locker room is arguably Van Dijk…

Gini has not been able to lead either because of his contract situation…

Right at the start of the season I predicted that we would be 20 points off worse than last season because of the fixture list, mostly because I thought that the lads would not have time to recover as is evident by what ginger talking about… We have conceded a lot of late goals this season, when Van Dijk got injured I slashed off another 10 points, then we get a injury to Matip and Gomez… We take another 10 points off and we are exactly where I thought we would be…

I stated at the start of the season that 75-80 points would be enough to secure the title and the only team capable of pushing beyond that would be City or possible us but with the injuries there was no way…

Klopp and his teams have always bounced back, he demands a lot but he is also extremely loyal to his players and he picks his moments to transition the team…

The fringe players that will leave are heartbroken, everybody that is leaving is heartbroken, there is not a single player at the club that is not enjoying his time there… Maybe not so much this season but you know what I mean, Gini for example loves the club and has enjoyed the best football of his life here…

Origi will never forget the nights he became a club legend but its time…

We don´t need a major transition, we just need a few additions to the squad and all three of our best centrebacks back… I hope Gini stays but otherwise we need a midfielder in and if we miss out on the Champions League I´m actually gonna predict right now that we win the title…

We will not give the same focus to the Europa League, Klopp would probably play a fairly young side in that competition to give the lads some experience… Like I could see Gomez leading the backline and Van Dijk given a break to focus on the league, not that Van Dijk would ever be happy about missing a game for us…

We would focus on the league and win it cause we could afford to give the lads a easier workload, City will be running a marathon by then a cross two seasons…
