Reading and hearing in recent months of studies and ‘experts’ advising that Northern clubs would improve their competitiveness (especially in the transfer market) if they moved their base, and training facilities, to within the M25.
with many players wanting to live around London it’s suggested that it would make the big northern clubs more powerful if they relocate, and just travel north for home matches. Majority of away matches will be close to or in London anyway.
Current situation probably allows clubs such as Watford and West Ham and Crystal Palace to punch above their weight when competing for players – when compared to a club like Newcastle or Sunderland.
Whilst I see the logic I can also see real problems with it – as clubs will lose touch even more with their local communities.
I’d bet money on at least one club doing this in the next 5 years, and wouldn’t rule it out for Liverpool.
January 16, 2016 at 7:21 am #796769Interesting but I don’t think it would happen to be honest.
There are benefits as you mentioned, but you would still have to compete with all the London clubs (and there are a few!) but, to use Newcastle as an example, you would be left with 19 trips to Newcastle for starters plus around another 8 games or so for all the clubs in the North of “Watford”. Compare that to London clubs who would only have the 8 games or so. Combined with the costs of setting up the new training facilities, would clubs really think it was worth for the potential of some signings? And the issue of losing touch with the local community? I don’t think so, I would say the con’s certainly out weigh the pro’s on this one.
I’d take that bet! 🙂
January 16, 2016 at 8:30 am #796781Can’t see it ever happening but the Northern clubs do start behind the 8 ball when looking to recruit players the majority of whom prefer to live in London and if not them then their wives and partner prefer living in London.
January 16, 2016 at 9:26 am #796817Can’t see it happening really. Yes London is a draw but money is more so. If you earn a fortune it’s not a big deal to fly down for a night out etc.
January 16, 2016 at 9:48 am #796844Sir alex ferguson greatest ever manager? Random i know but im feeling sorrybfor myself, with our current manager in youtubing fergies best moments. Genius. Made cleverly into a champion. Made nani into 1. Question is with this team he would walk this league this year. By march. U all agree?
January 16, 2016 at 9:53 am #796853Surely if a player was more interested in your geographical location than playing for your club you’d tell him to do one anyway? Who wants a player who chooses a club because of it’s access to amenities. Jesus.
January 16, 2016 at 10:22 am #796922Aguero, the best player in the league plays for City. Guardiola probably going to City. If the player has the right mentality they would not need to live near London.
January 16, 2016 at 10:43 am #796976like Jim said it-London is a draw,but £££££££ are even a bigger one.
January 16, 2016 at 10:44 am #796982Johnny-the best player in the league?.You mean Fellaini?lol.
January 16, 2016 at 10:47 am #797000Nope , I mean the new Tony Hibbert, Hector Bellerin lol

January 16, 2016 at 12:53 pm #797189Fair points made, but I can still see it happening and would guess it is most likely to be a North East club, such as Newcastle under Ashley.
Overseas Players families and wives would rather be in London, and the only reason many are in the north is because they are offered more money. It would be cheaper to recruit a player to a London base and it would also be more attractive to them.
Same applies to managers.
I hope it doesn’t happen, but I can see somebody giving it a try.
Liverpool FC and Man United already have offices in London, and I think Man City do as well.Right Banjo, £5 it is!
January 16, 2016 at 1:33 pm #797240I think it’s mainly aimed at clubs like Newcastle and Sunderland. Clubs like Utd, Liverpool, Everton and City will always be able to attract players because of their status. In the mid to late 90s Newcastle would have been able to attract players because of their league position.
I can see the logic and it could be worth a gamble.
January 17, 2016 at 10:27 am #798608I also wonder if the likes of Wenger could have managed a Northern Club, as he would have been paying more money rather than using London as a factor, or miss out on players and not be able to retain them – therefore would his wage structure and tightfistedness of the past meant that he would have finished outside the top 4 regularly.
