SSN’s reporting that WBA’s Nyom and Liverpool’s Matip could be suspended by FIFA for the 3 week duration of the A.N.Cup for refusing to join up with Cameroon?

Supposedly 7 Cameroon players are refusing to go. Looks like they may have no choice but to get those players suspended.

Wouldn’t it be incredibly silly if they actually did suspend them.

According to BBC they could be suspended going by the rules but the Cameroon federation are unlikely to do so as they are desperate to get the players on-side if not for this tournament then for the world cup campaign, if they suspend them they could alienate them and they could just retire from International football.

Works both ways: suspend them and run the risk of alienating them (though it seems Matip already is and I would imagine so is Nyom) or do nothing and run the risk that managers start to pull players out of these tournaments as they know nothing will be done.

According to their Coach Cameron are seemingly looking to take action against the missing players by reporting them to FIFA and would ask for the players to to be sectioned by FIFA but according to a Sports lawyer the players would be clear of any sections if they had previously advised their non availability for the ANC in writing to Cameron.

This is likely an empty threat to get them to change their minds. Matip doesn’t seem to want to play for Cameroon and AFAIK it goes deeper than the coach. I don’t see what’s stopping him from just retiring from international football. What are FIFA going to do then?

Even before we signed him reports stated that Matip would not be absent for the competition as he was no longer playing for his country. This is not a recent decision by him.

Reports today that FIFA won’t ban Matip. Though it is strange that the country asked for him to be banned in the first place if he doesn’t actually play for them? Why call him up?

Matip played for Cameroon 27 times, including during the recent world cup where he played twice. What is the reason behind Matip’s exile, as he never announced his retirement.

Here is what the coach said recently-

They have their reasons but it also shows that if these people are not there it’s a good thing. It means they do not have the necessary will.

I refer in particular to the Matip brothers. For Joel, I called him 15 times and I even sent him messages but he never responded. Marvin preferred to stay with his club.

Alfie – The point here is that managers pulling the players from a tournament is one thing, but players not wanting to play is something completely different.

CM – You say Matip played in the recent world cup, the last world cup was two and a half years ago.

    Paxman-

Was not having a go at Matip, was just stating he has played for his country on numerous occasions previously. Has something happened since the world cup for him not want to represent his country is what I was asking.

Cm, I think he fell out with the coach mate but I could be wrong. I read somewhere he hasn’t played for his country for a few years.

CM – Yeah as Sean said I think many players were at upset about the treatment they received from the coaching staff and that is why 7 of them are not playing for them.
