I write this five minutes before kick-off, hoping that this will be the last time we see 99% of these players and current management.

I know its a lot to hope for, but what we have is not nearly good enough and, after Villa put us out of our misery, I just hope that someone will step in, hand-out the pink slips and recruit some real footie people to rebuild a squad worthy of watching and belonging at the highest level.

I think it was a valiant backs to the wall effort last night, thanks mainly to the stupidity of Gayle and HRK in the previous two games. What became clear is that we lack cover and depth and real creativity. Grealish didn’t achieve much but he was always available, always probing and looking to play the killer pass. We are currently a long way from this. But I still felt that 20% possession at home against a team who finished below us in a game we had to win by more than one goal belied a negative underdog mentality at the club. Yes we defended heroically and often magnificently with all players playing their part, and were always a threat at set pieces, but if these are our aims we might as well have kept Pulis. And we have gone backwards, particularly in the second half of the season. It’s unbelievable to think that sixteen months ago we scored three goals (it should arguably have been four) in the first half at Anfield against a virtually full-strength Liverpool team. It’s the only game they’ve lost at Anfield for two seasons!
Sadly I suspect we now have the aura of a Championship club and in the two play-off games we played like the poor relations hoping to pull off a surprise whereas a few months ago we won at Villa Park and completely bossed the game. Noe the season is over and ends as it began in failure. The future should be plotted immediately by thanking Jimmy and sending him back to his previous duties and getting a manager in with the drive and know-how to take us forward. If the owner decides to spend more money so much the better but you don’t have to spend money to achieve success at this level – witness Sheffield United. If the powers that be still decide to make false economies in the appointment of a manager then I don’t hold out much hope for a future even as bright in the short term as it is now.

Yes Sarky i agree with most of what you are saying. From beeing the best club in the black country we are now behind the dingels and villa and where are we going after yesterday?First after my opinion we need a new owner who want to splash the cash, second we need a new manager who will be given time to build his own team, cause we will be staying in championship some years now, third get ride of the dead wood in our squad.I am sure we will loose Hegazi,Gibbs, and Phillips and send the loanies back to their clubs. We have some good youngsters like Harper,Edwards,Field,Leko,Fitzwater and Howkins and bring back Burke from Celtic and our future is not so bad at all,but we need a profile manager who wants to use young and hungry players.COYB Norway baggie

Fucking typical enter a thing where no away goals stand & we are elimanated on penalties after getting the better results over two legs i hope Villa get smashed to pieces at Wembley, we need a good manager now like Houghton, Pulis or Coleman.

Things could have been different if the two refs had had their eyesight checked. We should have had a penalty in both games but the refs ignored it. It isn’t just me the pundits on both Sky and Quest agreed. They also agreed that Gayle shouldn’t have got his second booking as it was a genuine attempt to get to the cross and he pulled back once he knew that he couldn’t reach the ball! I was hoping for Jokanovic (two promotions with Watford and Fulham) or Potter who’s done a decent job at Swansea and is not afraid to use young players. Pulis is about to get the sack from Boro so would be available (no ****ing way!).

Talk about contrasts. The stadium pre match and for much of the game was electrifying but the mood immediately afterwards was one of deep despair.
The shambolic end to our season with not one but two of our three recognised strikers red carded along with the unforgivable dismissal of Brunt left a valiant 10 men holding out for a penalty shootout when we had not a single experienced penalty taker among them! It just about summed up the depths of mismanagement which now prevail at the Albion.
With just a little more adventure this was a tie we might have won even without Gayle but the possession stats say it all.
So what of the future? In a word – bleak. Our wants list is pretty much unchanged – new owner, new manager and new players but who would now want to buy or manage us? Ship out the loanees and all the other dead wood in the squad, lose our handful of better players in the summer and what’s left. Not very much I’m afraid and that can only mean a long spell in the Chump at best. At least we should get to see some of the youngsters playing more regularly next year. Just a pity it will happen a year late.

I’m not sure there was much more Shan could’ve done other than his ridiculous idea of playing Brunt in centre midfield. He can’t cope against older players let alone younger fitter guys. For me Brunty has to play out wide, he simply cannot patrol in front of back 4 as he doesn’t stay on his feet, gives away far too many free kicks and you all saw the end result. I wasn’t always his biggest fan when he was with us, but when playing deep, Yacob would’ve been perfect for last night, whereas Brunt was about the worst choice at the club to play that role. I think Harper should’ve started. Villa are also quite poor, hope they don’t get through. When we pressed Villa early in the second half, you saw just how poor they actually are.
That said, great goal from Dawson & the team defended solidly throughout. Villa’s keeper looked really shaky all through the game, so it was ironic that he ended as their hero. I guess that’s football.
PS Never liked Grealish, like him even less after his antics last night of trying to referee the match himself. Haven’t seen anything like that since Billy Bremner!

A valiant effort. But much ado about nothing between two poor teams.

Now we are going to find out if the club really wants to do something about this sad state of affairs, or not.

What we need is an exciting, young, inspirational manager who is given carte blanche re recruitment.

    I’m not holding my breath!
