Yesterday I spent a couple of hours with someone who had inside info on the time that Steve Clarke and Pepe Mel were in charge. He alleges that both managers (but Mel in particular) suffered from interference by members of the coaching and backroom staff who disagreed with training methods. Two in particular it is alleged felt that they should have had the job rather than Mel and proceeded to sabotage his plans and turn players against him. Mel’s lack of English helped them and his interpreter, Dave McDonough, got the boot on the basis that he was interfering in training but was in fact only interpreting for Mel. He’d been appointed by Dan Ashworth on the recommendation of Rafa Benitez who he’d worked with at Liverpool, Milan and Valencia. Who knows what might have been if these clowns had not been around. At least TP finally got rid of them.

Didnt this come out a while back? Shame about Mel he did a good job. Clarke on the other hand lost the plot IMO.

There were rumours that this was the case but I’ve had it confirmed from a very reliable source.
