Thinking about Shaq’s situation (posted before on this on my ‘curious case’ thread a while back) and other players that have been and gone and should have ‘got more out of’ whether it be through injury or simply not a fit.

Shaqiri, once he goes (and I sensed final straw frustration from Klopp on this matter in his last comment on his situation), will have frustrated me because I like him, talented lad and expected him to fit in a lot more especially on the right for Mo (when out of form and change in formation/tactics) and contributed to our dead balls. We don’t have a true left footed free kick expert and Shaq is that and more!

Aquilani was another. Bags of talent but bloody hell what an utter waste of money.

Going back further we had Paul Stewart, a top player for Blackpool and Spurs and then his hamstrings (both) waited until he signed a contract with Liverpool for them to go into early retirement. Witnessed some very good games from Stewart (not many mind) but you always had a sense that it wasn’t gonna work out.

Just after Stewart (or around the same time) we had Nigel Clough, a very good player but wrong club at the wrong time for him with Souey going, Uncle Royston coming in changing formation (352) which Clough, despite having his moments (United for eg.) just didn’t fit in with the (said) change in formation/tactics.

Julian Dicks too. A cracking left peg and could defend (got caught out of position often tho much-like Riise did and Moreno too many times) but saw many a good game from him but fitness and consistency (connected) cost him. I am sure I will field quite a few WTF’s with this but he was a good player but it just didn’t happen for him.

Another left back in Christian Ziege too. A seasoned international and was excited when Ged eventually got him (although not by the legal channels which cost us a fine) but again, injury and form cost him when we should have got 3-4 more years out of him.

You could, maybe. put Rob Jones in there but we got 3-4 good years out of him so won’t include him in my list. Just talking ’bout players that came in and you expected more because of their talent/cost/requirement to fill a void.

One player tho that will definitely be added to this list unless he sorts out his consistent niggles and form is Keita. Shown glimpses but he went today he would’ve been a massive failure and waste of big money.

    Your input?

Dani Pacheco. Highest rated player at Barca in his age group before we signed him.

Nuri Sahin. Never got the best out of him and he never recovered. Still made a decent career for himself during both his Dortmund spells.

Suso. Came through with Sterling but Rodgers just lost faith in him and discarded him. Been a decent player for Milan since.

Benteke. Good striker but never looked he was going to fit. Still got some goals though.

Sturridge. Doesn’t get a free pass. Too many injuries. He should’ve left a legend.

Luis Alberto. Another who’s carved out a decent career in Italy.

Joe Cole. Supposedly more skillful than Messi according to Stevie G but was a complete dud.

Ryan Babel. Looked like he was going to be a world beater during his first season with us. Just fell away after Rafa lost faith in him.

Iago Aspas. Been great in Spain. Never got anywhere near his best from him.

Lallana. Again injuries an issue but 1/2 a good season isn’t good enough for someone who was supposed to be Suarez’s replacement.

Markovic. Showed flashes of what he could do but never built on any momentum. Ultimately laziness got the better of him.

Momo Sissoko. Eye injury pretty much ended his career with us. Was superb for a period before that.

Pennant. Could have been the winger we desperately needed. Off field issues weren’t kept in check.

Riera. Another who didn’t live up to his early promise.

Crouch. Just get the feeling that him and Torres could have been so much more.

I am surprised that only one has responded to this topic.
Two more to add to the list, Coates & Insua, both had played for their countries when they were 18, but their careers with Liverpool stalled.
I did have high hopes for Insua as he was very young, but he was very poor in his positioning which never improved.
Coates 6ft 5in but very slow on the turn.

Some good input here Razor and Liverlad. Agree entirely with all your selections. Not every player is gonna be a fit for us and every club has a list a mile long but it doesn’t reduce the frustration especially if it’s a player that we needed at that time and in that position we needed and it failed.

Missed one and a major one – Robbie Keane. Fantastic player. Wrong manager, wrong club, wrong formation, wrong time – prime example.

Robbie Fowler is one who stands out, for me.

Mind you, we did get a hell of a lot out of him. Local lad, loyal to the club, I think he had all the talent to surpass Rush as the club’s record goal scorer.

Absolutely incredible start to his career, but perhaps didn’t have the right kind of nutrition and lifestyle off the field. Which you can partly put down to coaching.

The sort of guy he is, and talent he had, I think we should have got more out of him.

I got to say Patrik Berger, what a player he was on his day, just a shame that his body could not cope with it. One of the best left wingers on his day.

Another one is Anelka, I will never understand what went on in Rafa’s brain when he picked Diouf over Anelka. Nicolas fitted so well in with the squad and it was a monumental mistake to buy El Hadji after his world cup exploits instead of a lad that knew the club and players, had the skill and determination to play on the wings for us…

    Rafa didn’t sign Diouf.
It was Houllier that made that decision.

Yeah right, Houllier… Yeah one of the worst deals of the century, equal to Aquaman kinda…. I was gutted at the moment when I heard that we were not signing Anelka, here we had a France international that knew the league and was entering his prime… Instead we signed a record wild card transfer that blew up in our faces, I mean Diouf got immediately alienated at the club and never settled, which got our other midfield signing from Senegal in hot waters too. Its very likely that Diouf vented out his frustrations at his team mate from Senegal. I cant remember his name…
