I thought Id create a thread to generally talk about pre-season and our performance.
A very important 21 days training & Friendlies coming up. I believe all or almost all first team squad members should be back in training by the 1st August game against Arsenal.
Pre season schedule (UK Times):
MON 23 JUL 2018, 12:30pm – Perth Glory
SAT 28 JUL 2018, 7:05pm – Internazionale (Champions Cup)
WED 01 AUG 2018, 8:05pm – Arsenal (Champions Cup)
SUN 05 AUG 2018, 3:00pm – Manchester City (Community Shield)
TUE 07 AUG 2018, 8:05pm – Lyon (Champions Cup)July 16, 2018 at 8:07 pm #1656599I think that the players in the latter stages of the World Cup will return late and the majority won’t start the first couple of games of the season be it at Chelsea or any of the top clubs. But we’ll see?
July 16, 2018 at 8:22 pm #1656609I heard the World Cup finalist get 2 weeks off and that probably starts tomorrow the rest have started their 2 week holidays. Im sure they will be ready to hit the ground running, 2 weeks doesn’t lower the fitness levels.
July 16, 2018 at 10:02 pm #1656632Bort, I guess it will depend on what the Sports Scientists say on analysing the players when they finally all return. Spurs for instance had 9 players in the last week of WC. Time will tell but obviously from a Chelsea viewpoint the sooner we get them all back and integrated into the squad the better. Cheers 999
July 17, 2018 at 7:47 pm #1656932First match is less than a week. Wow. And Sarri just started yesterday. No doubt we still have a good squad who starts the pre-season. Pedro, Alonso, Morata, Cesc, Bakayoko, Azpi, Barkley, Drinkwater …
and now Jorginho …. And soon they’ll be joined by Willy Caballero and Rudiger. With the team we have now, we should be able to challenge for mid-table.But to challenge for the top 4, it’s completely a different story. I don’t think we have a good enough squad for that
July 18, 2018 at 2:28 am #1656971Australia’s A-League is out of season right now with its final match of the season the Grand Final, as we call it, played on 5 May 2018 and Perth Glory weren’t part of that match either so the Perth Glory players will be less fit than Chelseas. The standard is average, possibly that of 1st Division teams in England, barely Championship. You possibly saw Chelsea play Sydney FC a few seasons back which would give you an idea.
July 19, 2018 at 8:14 pm #1657634I took this from Nines post from a different thread because I thought it should go here too.
This is the initial pre-season Chelsea squad:
Marcin Bulka
Jared Thompson
Bradley Collins
David Luiz
Ethan Ampadu
Fikayo Tomori
Michael Hector
Tomas Kalas
Marcos Alonso
Emerson
Davide Zappacosta
Ola Aina
Cesc Fabregas
Danny Drinkwater
Tiemoue Bakayoko
Ross Barkley
Mario Pasalic
Jorginho
Kasey Palmer
Pedro
Lucas Piazon
Charly Musonda
Callum Hudson-Odoi
Alvaro Morata
Tammy AbrahamJuly 19, 2018 at 9:01 pm #1657640Why do we still keep Piazon? He’s 24 now, I don’t think he will make ever our first team. Also Michael Hector, what a weird buy by Mourinho. And Tomas Kalas.
July 23, 2018 at 1:59 pm #1658511Takeaways from the first 45 against Perth – Jorginho looked class, Hudson-Odoi played an absolute blinder, Morata was shit.
July 23, 2018 at 2:07 pm #1658514We need to accommodate Hudson Odoi into the first team and sign him up to a new long term contract.
July 23, 2018 at 2:10 pm #1658516I know its only Perth, but he really looks something special mate.
July 23, 2018 at 2:17 pm #1658520BL, like you I don’t want to get too carried away because I got all excited over RLC early on but I’ve been saying for a while this boy could be really special I hope Sarri is brave enough to start him regularly and that the Club are smart enough to sign him up to a new lucrative long term contract that rewards his fantastic potential.
As you say let’s not get too carried away because it is v Perth Glory but Barkley is looking like he might be a player too?. Cheers 999
July 23, 2018 at 2:26 pm #1658526Yeah, a good display from Barkley. I think this season is really make or break for his career.
I tell you what, there’s been some moments in this game where you could already see Sarriball starting to take effect! Pinging the ball around in triangles, constantly looking for that forward pass. Things look good!
July 23, 2018 at 2:33 pm #1658534BL, I think it’s probably asking a lot for Sarri to get anywhere near Conte’s first season give all the circumstances but I think it could be an exciting one under Sarri. Still need a 20 goal a season striker imo.
Good start and more returning W.Cup players awaiting Sarri on his return and Sarri will have a clearer view of the players he took with him to Oz and who he might want to retain as part of his PL squad for this season.
Overall the whole visit to Perth seems to have been a very positive experience. Cheers 999
July 23, 2018 at 2:35 pm #1658536Thanks for all the reports. We keep a clean sheet but we only scored 1 against Perth. Were our defenders comfortable with back 4?
July 23, 2018 at 2:40 pm #1658538Ist half very good although average opposition. Ross Barkley stood out, Hudson-Odoi has a great future, Zappacosta good too. Morata the same as last season, get rid of. 2nd half basically boring. Our keeper made one intercept of a cross just before half time and had bugger all else to do. A good training run to increase fitness. Drinkwater must have gone over as the drink waiter. Why take someone that distance 12,000 odd miles who stays in the hotel room.
July 23, 2018 at 2:43 pm #1658542Jorginho touched the ball 101 times and made 98 successful passes on his Chelsea debut.
He only played 45 minutes.
July 23, 2018 at 2:48 pm #1658547Aindro, hard to tell about the defence really mate as Perth offered so little as an attacking threat. Emerson looked a little suspect in defence a couple of times, but that could just be pre-season rustiness.
1st half was great, 2nd half we lost our shape a bit I thought, but it gave Sarri a good opportunity to look at all the players. As 1967 said above, Barkley and Hudson-Odoi were the standout players, Abraham looked good too when he came on.
I’m sad to say that Morata was absolutely terrible. Needs to be moved on asap and replaced with a prolific scorer. I know we would be paying over the odds for a 30 year old if we sign Higuain, but if he can put the ball in the back of the net then we should go for it. It could be the difference between a top-four finish or not.
July 23, 2018 at 2:53 pm #1658549I think BL’s last para is spot on. Tbh I’m not sure Morata wants to be here.
July 23, 2018 at 2:55 pm #1658552The Community Shield could be quite a game both sides commited to attack both playing a high line.
