If accurate, it would appear that this weekend will be the first time for Sarri to come face to face with the remainder of the squad coming back from the WC. You have to assume that he would have some in depth chats with the guys to get across his desires/expectations and to get the feedback from the individuals. Based on this, and hopefully more than just a one off, he will be able to decide who wants to stay and he wants to stay and who can go. Clearly the timing is not good as he will literally only have a matter of days to implement any transfers he wants too but that is always an issue in a WC year
Fingers crossed for a bit more clarity on the squad by this time next week. KTBFFHAugust 2, 2018 at 4:57 pm #1661205
Im not say Morata is shit for his ability/potential I’m saying he is shit for his mentality which will make or break the player he becomes.
Firstly: Morata’s career goal to game record suggests he is not much better than Jonathan Walters.
Secondly: The idea that you just suggested that Chelsea are starting an unfit player week in week out is ridiculous. Look at the picture for last 7-9 months Morata has shown no grit or determination to turn his fortunes around. Watch him on the field he is so timid and spends most of it on the ground.
Thirdly: His weak mentality is very clear to see. This is Morata’s personality and it wont change.August 2, 2018 at 6:00 pm #1661214
bort, not totally accurate mate Morata has circa 100 goals in circa 300 appearances whilst Walters has the same amount of goals in over 500 appearances.
The fact is Chelsea bought Morata for a lot for money and without they can sell him for a reasonable fee they just have to try and make it work.
In the early months of last Season Morata looked a good player and was scoring gals somehow the club have to find a way to get him back to that.
Let’s face it even if we had no restrictions on spending there aren’t really any obvious choices out there to bring in as a replacement striker I think we’re stuck with probably having to work this problem out with the players we’ve got.August 2, 2018 at 6:21 pm #1661216
My choice to lead our line is Michy too. I still remember Morata scoring 3 (or 4?) against Stoke early last season. But he missed a lot too in that match!! Look at Drogba or Costa. They did not miss a lot. That’s the key of our successes in the past. I honestly can’t see Morata leading our attack anymore. I start to see him like Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. A player who would make impact when coming from the bench. That’s what he was at Real Madrid and probably at Juve.August 2, 2018 at 7:00 pm #1661223
Im only counting top league (Premier League, Serie A, La Liga) goals for both:
Morata: 157 games = 51 goals 0.3 goals per game
Walters: 229 games = 43 goals 0.18 goals per game
On the outside you are right Morata is slightly(0.12) better than Walters. But look at the difference of clubs: Morata has only played with the best players in the World at Madrid, Juve and Chelsea whilst Walters has fed on scraps at Stoke City.August 2, 2018 at 7:40 pm #1661237
Bort…confidence, mental blocks, nagging self doubt, personal ‘demons’, lack of a killer instinct….whatever it is it can be addressed if handled in the right way. Different players need to be managed differently to bring out the best in them. Whatever it is that currently ails Morata…who has all the physical attributes and required skill to be a top striker, can hopefully be resolved by Sarri and the club. Give him a chance I say, even if We end up signing another centre forward.August 2, 2018 at 7:50 pm #1661239
Bort, I posted an article about Sarri a while ago about what he did at Napoli. Your presenting a very similar argument to the critics of higuain when he moved from Spain to Italy. I think that’s right.
Anyhow, the sum total is that I fully expect Sarri to say something similar to morata as he did with higuain.
as you say, all of the doubts have crept into his game. He looked short in confidence last season and cut a frustrated figure and was having a go at loads of referees. He needs a drogba moment and fingers crossed CFC get a top quality strikerAugust 2, 2018 at 8:25 pm #1661248
Bort, true enough mate but I think you’ll find that a large slice of Morata’s appearance have been from the bench.
Anyway the reality is I don’t think we can sign a credible striker between now and the 9/08 which means that Sarri is going to have to try and improve what he’s got.August 3, 2018 at 8:05 am #1661329
Higuain has gone and really there are not that many top strikers out there so I am getting the feeling that Sarri will stick with Morata, Michy and Giroud
Clearly some work has to be done on Morata in terms of his confidence but it is not beyond the realms of possibility that so long as the player himself is happy to remain at Chelsea (which I did read previously was not the case?) then Sarri can help him. Personally, I do not think anything along the same lines is required for either Michy or Giroud and they seem strong mentally, however, for Michy in particular the whole game plan has to be changed to get the best out of him
From everything I read, I would argue that the style of football that Sarri wants to play will suit Michy perfectly so effectively we could have a “new” striker on our hands. Giroud plays his own type of game and I can see him being used to change the pattern of play if this is required
A lot of pressure on Sarri to deliver, but again from what I have read this is a large part of his management style so my feeling is lets leave the strike force alone and see how they develop. This could be a very potent front 3 if Sarri can get them playing and they (Morata) starts to believe in themselves. On current form I can see Michy being our starter once Sarri has a chance to work with him until Morata can show the mental strength to try and rival him. KTBFFHAugust 7, 2018 at 7:58 pm #1662790
Our last pre-season match. Basically 2nd team will be the starters. Last chance of RLC, Drinkwater, Christensen, Zappa and co to impress Sarri.August 7, 2018 at 10:04 pm #1662823
5 games 3 goals is simply not good enough when you consider the opposition was not the best. We were terrible in front of goal every game of preseason, It was our achilles heal last season and I’ve seen no improvement in fact it looks worse.
If Hazard gets up to 17 goals in the league which is his highest ever tally Chelsea are going to need at minimum 3-4 other players to get 10-15 goals each to be able to compete for top 4.
Very unlikely in my opinion.August 7, 2018 at 10:12 pm #1662825
Well done Rob Green. Love it!August 7, 2018 at 10:24 pm #1662827
Lack of goals is definitely one of our biggest problems if not the biggest and one that probably can’t be solved by the transfer market.
Sarri has to develop the strikers we’ve got as h did at Napoli and work on how we get goals from other areas.August 7, 2018 at 10:24 pm #1662828
Not impressed at all with the performance, there was no urgency whatsoever in that first half, the only players that i can say tried were Ampadu, Christensen and Bulka in the first half and Kante, Jorginho, Barkley and Green for saving the penalty in the second.
Wilian was selfish, Hazard was rusty and the less said about RLC the better, as for D Water and Baka they can go for free!
And as Bort points out rightfully, we will struggle big time without a striker and that’s why i’m shocked that Chelsea is willing to break the bank for a keeper but not for a striker ( Lewandasky, Icardi, the Torino striker, hell even Chicharito is better than what we have combined ), but not a priority
I cannot recall the last time we didn’t have a monster striker who put defenders under intense pressure ( Viali, Hasselbank, Drogba, Costa ) the future with Morata and Giroud looks bleak.August 8, 2018 at 12:24 am #1662838
Our preseason showed or underlined what we were lacking last season. Goals. Sarri has to work his magic with Morata. Otherwise we are doomed. I said we would need to make Michy our first choice striker. He knows the back of the net. Bakayoko should be sold.August 8, 2018 at 7:57 am #1662880
Did not see the game last night so can only go by the reports I was getting during the game
RLC in the first half did not do enough to command the middle and let the ball go through there as Sarri would like but apparently did improve in the second half and was unlucky to hit the post. Bulka pulled of a couple of decent saves as well. Ampadu was the man of the match and looks to be nailed on to be included in the squad
Have to say hard to tell what Sarri may have learnt as this was a 2nd string looking to impress which then changed radically in the second half
Well done to Green for the penalty save as well which for me has highlighted one thing in the pre season where we have won 2 (I think) penalty shoot outs is that we do appear to have much more mental strength and confidence in taking them which may be a factor in our Europa games if we do not score enough goals (which is the main negative from the pre season but what we are new anyway). Aindro – for whatever reason, and I assume probably the lack of credible options, we will be going with the strike force from last season but without Michy and Tammy instead (if reports are true)
I have no idea behind this logic and how much input Sarri had on this but clearly we are going to have to pin our hopes on Sarri being able to get into the head of Morata to help him regain his confidence
Bakayoko also looks to be lined up for a loan to Milan and in all honesty much as I would potentially have given him another season, from what I saw last year his style is a million miles away from what Sarri is expecting so this does make a lot of sense to me. KTBFFHAugust 8, 2018 at 1:33 pm #1663089
CFC1905 thanks for the info. I haven’t heard about Tammy being loaned-out. Michy there are rumours about it. Some clubs in Spain want him on loan. I don’t know, I just have a weird feeling that we will repeat the SAME mistake on relying too much on Morata, like last season. The guy is NOT a goalscorer, he only scored 15 times from 63 appearances for Juventus. I am sorry to bring back Costa again but he made 89 appearances for us and scored 52 goals. So am I worried, yes. We have a saying: it’s like an ass (donkey), falling in the same hole twice.
Bakayoko, sell him IMO. Not Chelsea material clearly. Same as Drinkwater. We can get money to help offset 71m for KepaAugust 8, 2018 at 2:38 pm #1663134
Aindro – maybe I was not clear but Tammy to stay as the 3rd choice striker
Michy to Sevilla was all over the press yesterday but I see no further updates today so who knows
Like it or not we are going with Morata and I think he is a good player with goals in him but completely short of confidence at the moment. We have to hope that Sarri is as good as it is claimed about getting the best out of players because as the pre season has shown following on from last season – we do not convert enough of the chances that we create. If that trend continues then we will struggle to win anything. KTBFFHAugust 8, 2018 at 3:48 pm #1663171
I would rather start with a false striker. I cannot see how our current strike force are suddenly going to change and score a hateful of goals.
