999, I’m not sure if you as a moderator had better access to the people behind the site.
If you do, it would be an idea to echoe what’s being said on here. Nothing seems to happen wrt the bugs on this site that frankly makes it a pain in the Arsene to be here.

AVATAR PROBLEM – I tried to change my avatar today and encountered a problem. The avatar does not display. Instead it shows the image alternative text, which is set your side to be the user name. It therefore appears to the reader as if the the Username is repeated twice.

There are many users this affects. Easy to spot from the duplicate username. I can (and will) simply remove the avatar to remove the duplicated username, but that doesn’t solve the problem the avatar feature is not working.

Howcome some users avatars are showing, you may ask. I looked at the source code for an answer. This is the link for my avatar …..

    http://static.teamtalk.com.s3.amazonaws.com/content/uploads/2017/09/MacGuffin_avatar-80×80.jpg

And for a user whose avatar is showing ……

    /content/uploads/2016/02/02141215/dinny.jpg

You can click on that link to see his avatar picture. The link address tells us TT has changed where it sres data. Clearly the old avatars are still stored at the old location but new avatars are stored at the new location.

The problem is the site S3.Amazonaws.com This is a cloud based service https://aws.amazon.com/

There are issues with storage here. It is known to be vulnerable to virus and malware. And as a result different browsers, anti-virus etc. may block it. I’m into unknown territory here given I only spent half an hour troubleshooting.

As for TT’s standard response “the IT department are working on it”, I suspect that’s like me saying “my IT department informed me of this bug”. If the site does have a IT manager it would be good if he were to show his face, instead of hiding behind the gatekeeper.

The site is a WordPress site with the BBPress add-on for the forum. Both are free software supported by unpaid volounteers. They have forums where users can ask for help solving technical issues. Either TT has asked and nobody can help or it hasn’t bothered.

As for Amazon AWS, who are the likely culprits in this glitch. If TT is paying for the service it has a right to expect prompt support. If not, then thats what happens when you get it for free. And likewise, we TT users cannot moan too loud since we are not paying for the servic.

Or are we? The site is littered with adverts and sponsors. It is therefore getting revenue. It is reasonable to expect some of the revenue is used to pay for an IT technician who knows his onions and solves the problem. I could solve this avatar problem in a heartbeat simply by changing the storage location for new avatars to be that of the old (working) avatars!

My theory is……….. the site has been taken over by the Glazers who are lining their pockets with the revenue while scrimping on expenditures.

    Hello all.

Believe me I hear all your complaints, they are all taken seriously and all passed on to our IT department. I appreciate you may feel like you’re being palmed off, but I can hand on heart assure you that you aren’t.

Personal insults aside, I genuinely do care about this site and having worked on it for 18 years, I take huge pride in what we achieve here. But I do appreciate there are plenty of development issues with logging in and pop-up ads.

I have passed on each and everyone of your complaints and will continue to do so until we get an environment that everyone is happy with.

There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes which I can’t sadly make you party to, but I will stress again that our (very small) editorial team really do care that you have a site which is first and foremost user friendly.

I appreciate I’m asking a lot of you, but I do ask you stick with us and trust in us that we as editorial are doing all we can to improve things. To say we don’t care hurts, because, believe me, we 100% do.

Please refrain from advertising other sites – this is in breach of the rules – and cannot be tolerated.

I’ve given you access to contact me personally and I take the time (my own time) to answer each and every one of your queries on a one to one basis.

Once again, if feel the need to contact me, need help with a site issue or want to bring something to my attention, then please do, because I repeat, we really do bloody care!

    The email is editor@teamtalk.com

    Best wishes, and sincere apologies.

    Marshy

    Hello all.

A quick update. I’ve been told the log-on issues with the forums have been fixed.

Can you all give this a go, see if this works for you, and best yet, carry on contributing to these pages.

All your opinions are extremely valued and I’d like to once again apologise for the inconvenience.

Stick with us because this page is definitely stronger with the more voices we have on it….

And don’t forget, please contact me personally editor@teamtalk.com if there’s anything you feel I need to be aware of.

    Thanks again,

    Marshy

Sorry James but I find it hard to believe there’s an IT team working on this website.

I remember you guys put up an unprotected form (requiring no login or anti-bot verification), no experienced web developer would do that… then who shows up to stop the viagra ads… A member of the dev team? No… Mark Holmes. Come on, it’s obvious there’s no development team!

To me it looks like you guys split up from your old partners (2 years ago?) and set up this new format for the purpose of cutting corners (no more manual screening of each comment, using free software developed by third parties rather than maintaining your own propriety code – negating the need for developers)… Then tried to sell this downsizing to your userbase as a “big upgrade”. As we all know that didn’t turn out too well, and teamtalk immediately lost the majority of it’s active members.

If you want to give the impression you care and give members some optimism for the future, you could start by being honest. Take some responsibility rather than pass the buck to a “dev team” who’s actual existence is highly dubious. You certainly don’t need a dev team when you use third-party software… but you do need a real person on-board to fix technical issues, and keep whoever is repeatedly breaking things away from causing more havoc.

Personally I quit posting when the feature-massacre extended it’s way to the login feature. I’ve come back months later and see many of the issues I have reported over the years are unfixed. Commenting on articles anyone? Used to be the whole point of teamtalk and hasn’t worked properly the whole duration of this new format, which is several years old now. I’ve no plans to start posting again, but once in a while I’ll keep tabs on things… more out of macabre fascination than optimism.

You guys are screwing up the website James.

There is hardly an IT team working on it – the front page still has clubs like Newcastle and Brighton under “Championship” and Sunderland as “Premier League”.

Joe Kinghere, This site has gone down hill in the last few years, It is pointless coming on here if you don’t support Liverpool or Man Utd, They should rename the site RedTalk, It looks like it’s being ran by a couple of Liverpool fans and a Man Utd fan, I miss the old Teamtalk, Had some great times on there, It’s practically dead now, which is a shame.

Me too, Ginger. I just don’t have the patience for this website anymore. There were technical issues 6 months ago, and there are still issues now. And people wonder why they have lost so many posters to Footy Debate where there are NO technical issues. Surely it can be sorted pretty easily…you’re just taking the piss out of those who have remained loyal to this site

Too many popups & adverts causing it. You don’t need that many. You have more advertiser’s than posters these days.

I’d just like to take this time to thank our absentee landlords for bringing back the varied pop up adverts that cover the screen when I visit this site.
    It’s much appreciated.

I’ll now be visiting much less as a result.

Look I get it that the site needs advertising to survive and make a profit. I can deal with two ads covering the top and bottom of my screen, but this is getting ridiculous. Do you really need to place a pop up ad that covers half of my screen? How am I even suposed to read anything or navigate the site?
