Unfortunately I have just found out that MacGuffin has passed away. Details are still very sketchy but I have been told he passed away ‘several months ago’ in Thailand. I am waiting to hear back from the British Embassy in Thailand and am trying to join a local Facebook expats group to see if I can get further details, particularly if his family in the UK have been made aware.
    In your own words Mac:

Fuuuuuck! I thought the thread was going to be a joke because he’s not posted for a while. Oh My God, heart actually sank reading that Homerjay. You met up with him didn’t you, in Bangkok? Jesus that’s really shocked me.
    How old was he roughly?

    #1846064

Very tragic news – although I didn’t know him personally, please do pass on my condolences to his family if at all possible.

Please tell me this isn’t true? I know he is one of the older members as he used to watch United in the 60s.

Hey Happy, yeah I met up with him in January 2019 and have spent the past couple weeks working back from his old phone number and the limited information I knew about him.
I came across a public record Thai document of his stating his year of birth to be 1954 which would make him 66 ish.
@sympathy when I met him he said he had, I think, a sister in the UK but I don’t know if his wife had any contact with her so I don’t know if she will have been made aware. Mac came across as somebody who may go years without ‘checking in’ with family so to speak. Hopefully the embassy may know
While I’m thinking of it, the function on TT to view profile is not working. Perhaps if an admin reads this they can let me know when last he logged in

66 is no age at all. Absolutely terrible. Wonder what happened.

    I’m 40 tomorrow! 🤦‍♂️

This is really sad news I actually have a tear in my eye. Despite the abuse Mac took from many posters on here he always replied back in a dignified classy and articulate manner without ever trying to cause offence. R.I.P MAC you will be missed.

On a good note glad to here Tommy is on the mend.

IKA – I had a fair few run-ins with Mac as (unfortunately for me) he had a razor sharp memory!! 🙂
But you’re right he was harmless at the back of it all. The forum has lost a real A-Grade poster in MacGuffin. I think he was posting here before me which would make it around 20 years he posting on here – quite a long time. It’s a big loss.
Perhaps in time Homerjay can share some more details of the night out in Bangkok they shared.
I emailed Tommy again yesterday so will see what he comes back with, hopefully he’s kicked on a bit during this lockdown. Cheers.

Devastated! The most balanced poster ever, never lost his temper.
He was my best friend in here and i remember the witch hunt he on owns own struck down with elegance. Teamtalk will never be the same without him.
    R.I.P Mac.

Very sad. RIP MacGuffin. Always found him entertaining to be honest. A great poster for a long long time.

I spent a bit of time back tracking and found what appears to be his last post on the Sheffield United thread 25/11/2019 – simply he quoted “1-1”

The prior one I found on the Partizan at Home Brighton at Home thread, a classic post as follows:

“Our home record isn’t that bad is it? Surely we have to win today??? …… I just love the desperation in poor happy’s voice. Pleeeeze somebody, anybody, tell me it’s going to be ok today.

There, there happy, my little treasure. Mommy macguffin promises we’ll collect 3 points today. Now finish your milk and Wayne Rooney annual, I’ll be back in a few minutes to turn the lights out.

A N D no playing with Mr Winkle, we don’t want your blindness to come back do we.

    ===============

Later that night ………. an eerie voice can be heard in happy’s room.

I’m the boogieman and here to tell you its all going to go tits up, ending in yet another embarassing home defeat. AND tommorow all the kids at school are going to laugh at you.

PS – I’m optimistic and going for a 3-1 win”

You will always be missed MacGuffin. Rest in Peace lad.

Very sad news. I had many a debate with Mac he always knew his onions and he would spend many hours researching things in support of a position he was taking.

A renowned poster on the Teamtalk site over many years. RIP Mac.

Jesus that is sad to hear. His last post i remember him saying he’d moved out of the city and had gone off the grid a bit and wasn’t posting as often. I’ve been on here since the beginning more or less and we’ve lost a lot of good posters. Some probably through choice and others probably through passing. Have to say that even though you dont know people personally, the amount of interaction over the years means it feels personal especially in times like this. RIP Mac. His real name was Dennis Homer?

Very sad news indeed, not ashamed to say i have a tear in my eye, had many good chats with Mac and felt the sharp end of his tongue a few times along with my club, especially being a guest to this page, but i liked the man a great deal and we will be sorely missed.

    RIP Mac Daddy

Hope Tommy is also getting better and this virus hasnt impacted his recovery

Very sad news to hear. Over the years I’ve been coming to this site and the forum less and less but would always look forward to seeing if MacGuffin had posted. I enjoyed his debates and respected how he always tried to support anything he wrote with facts. He was a big contributor to the Non-Football section and you could tell that he was not just a football man but someone who took pride in learning and knowing what was happening in the world so that he could have his opinion on what was wrong with it.

The last I remember, which seems a lifetime ago, was that he left Bangkok to move to a more northern section of Thailand. I remember looking up the place he mentioned to see if it was close to where I’d lived and found it to be quite remote, which he acknowledged and said it was harder to post on Teamtalk due to the bad internet. I think he mentioned he made the move with his wife so she could be closer to her family – might be recalling that wrong, but perhaps he made the move due to health concerns as his passing is only 6 months after he made the move.

MacGuffin will be truly missed. I’ve been posting on and off on this site for nearly twenty years (shocked me to read you’re 40 @happyhurling as I vaguely recall you announcing you were turning 30 which doesn’t seem like a decade ago) and he was one of the old guards and constant voices in here.

I didn’t like getting into a debate with Mac as it would mean I would have to do my homework first. And always looked forward to his views on various topics such as the endless progress debates on here (I’m sure happy didn’t).

If I recall correctly he wanted Ole to be given more time to become successful. I hope this happens and he does as a final I told you so from him.

RIP Mac, you will be missed.

RIP mate, I loved reading his posts, they were very balanced and it was hard as fuck to disagree with him as he put a lot of effort into explaining his views about football.

The one thing that stands out about him is that I never saw him lose his temper, I bet those around him miss him the most as he was steady as a rock and I suspect that many people were drawn to that quality of his.
