This assumes of course that he stays and it is arguable that he has already earned the right to stay having qualified for the CL and if we win the EL I guess he has to stay.
So on that basis have been thinking what do we need to make Sarri Ball work in the way it seemed to work for Napoli.
Starting at the back i believe Dave is just not good enough going forward as his distribution is terrible – he just cant cross the ball.
Alonso is probably better at this than defending so could fit in. In the centre of defence Luiz is too casual and is a mistake wating to happen. I would prefer Dave in there with Rudiger.
Both Spurs and Liverpool have dominant centrebacks and fullbacks that can deliver really well.
In midfield we all know the debate about Kante and Jorginho and assuming Sarri will not try Kante holding then either side of Jorginho has to be RLC or Barkley with Kante who has to play most of the time especially when away. However when at home against weaker teams or when we need a goal then why not play RLC and Barkley alongside Jorginho. Also when we travel to places like City and Liverpool why not play Kante in the holding role with again the two English guys either side of him that would stiffen the defence without losing some goal threat.
Up front we are only missing a powerhouse centre forward with pace as this is essential in the PL. I believe that with all our wide players (assuming Hazard does not go) we have enough (if CHO stays) given Puliscic is also arriving.
The centre forward role is one that desparately needs to be improved upon and I would let Higuain go or indeed Giroud if either or both did not accept playing joint back up alongside Tammy who deserves to be back at the Bridge. So Tammy and either Higuain or Giroud would back up our new powerhouse upfront.
I believe that some of our football has been excellent but matched by some terrible performances. I believe that we need to change/tweak each area of the team and then work in each area to improve their performance for example in defence how to defend set pieces and upfront how to creat space and in midfield how to arrive in the box but at the same time keeping the back door closed.
Sarri said he thinks he needs only two new players and i suspect he hasnt included a centre forward in this but from the above we need 3(if Hazard leaves) as we need to replace him also a new right back that can distribute and the new centre forward.
With changes in personnel to suit the circumstances of the match then maybe Sarri Ball could work for us too.
What are the chances though that Sarri could ever be that flexible in his thinking?!

There is no chance of Sarri being flexible. I was always confident under Jose and Antonio going into any final. I am not at all with Sarri, so I am not expecting us to win the Europa league Under Sarri. If Jose was our manager going into this final, with the same set of players I would make it almost a banker that we would come away with the trophy. Sarri won’t be looking at the Arsenal weaknesses and exploiting them, or even their strengths and working out ways to stop them, just as any top tactician would. He will just play his normal game with his normal subs, and if Arsenal have us worked out, which I expect they will, Sarri will just carry on with things the way they are making like for like subs until we get beaten. You can bet almost anything that Arsenal will be studying us before the game and have an effective game plan to stop us and exploit our weaknesses. Every wondered why Sarri has never won a trophy?

the class of player, desire and a hell of a lot of luck got us top four and but for a goal line clearance by David Luiz we were going to lose out to a standard of side our previous champion sides would have beaten with ease in the Europa League semi final. That econd half was truly abysmal. Sarri gets very little credit from me sorry, even though I think they will keep him on for next season. Agree with Chris 100%.

Yep, agree with you 1967. We are not in the final because of Sarri. With players like a Kepa, Hazard, Willian, Pedro, Luiz, RLC we should have strolled into that final. It is the class of the players that got us through. I didn’t see anything tactical about our play that got us through, in fact quite the opposite. Will say, Barkley and Jorginho both played well. Boy, do we need a proper captain that leads at he moment. Felt sorry for Gary Cahill, Sarri really kicked him in the teeth. It was insulting for Sarri not to trust him. I have always liked Gary Cahill, and you can’t tell me he would not have been able to do the job in that game. He is an ex international that has won everything with us, and that doesn’t happen by chance

Chris… so finishing 4th and getting to two finals in one season is all about the players and has nothing to do with the manager.

So if that’s how you think, then what do you think of conte who failed to deliver top 4 with exactly the same players and created the mess sarri has had to sort out? Or what do you think of Jose when we flirted with relegation and neither qualified for the champions league or won a trophy?

Gary Cahill wasn’t even a regular under conte in his final season as he was being replaced by Christiansen.

Anyhow, I can see that the man is dammed if he does or doesn’t by blind ignorance and hatred in some quarters in here.

Time to switch this site off for a long summer break. Have a fun summer bitching on at everything you negative Nancy’s.

RDP Jose and Antonio were both top coaches. Unfortunately they both ended up at loggerheads with the club and players. Gary Cahill had a good last season under Conte https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=40093&season_id=150
It was David Luiz that got phased out, after a fall out. Poor decision by conte especially after falling out with costa

RDP forgot to say, I wouldn’t say fans have a hatred towards Sarri, it is more to do with his methods and style of play. A huge divid is forming in the fan base and it is not healthy. My views don’t matter, but the views of the fans at the game do, and when you see the team being booed off and boos coming out against some of Sarri’s decisions, that is something that does matter. In all the years I have supported Chelsea it is unprecedented and indicates we have a major problem.

I am not convinced with Sarri ball neither. Slow, tippy tappy football. But we are 3rd and in Europa final. And we reached Carabao final. So it is not a really bad season. Would we win against Arsenal? My opinion: unlikely. They have goal scorers and our game would be easily readable for them.

But would I prepare for another season of Sarri ball, considering he will have a full pre-season? I think so. I hope that Sarri won’t fall out with the board or players like Jose or Conte. That only, will be enough. If we are successful to integrate Abraham and/or Mason Mount and Tomori like we integrated RLC and CHO: that also will make me happy.

Aindro, Sarri is not the man to bring through our youth players. Sarri likes to train and use a very small squad. His method is to repeatedly work on passing patterns and drum them into his players. Apparently I also read that he doesn’t support gym work and he is the only Chelsea manager since Roman took over not to give a debut to one of our youth players. Have a read of these articles

If this becomes the norm where we have to bring in over the hill players such as Higuain etc. then I will definitely curb my enthusiasm for the club. Its unacceptable for so many reasons that we don’t use our youth and proven loanees, we can’t continue to use fan and media pressure to force a manager to employ youth, he has to do it because he wants to. Tbh I haven’t seen much evidence of that.

Sorry, but you support Chelsea or you don’t and for me there is no middle ground regardless of whether you like the manager, the owner or individual players or not

This season we have not seen enough decent attacking football as was expected to determine whether Sarri ball actually can work in the EPL or not. I have seen some good games, or at least individual halves of games, where we have looked exceptional but equally we have seen some disasterous games as well

I value experience and believe that any successful team finds the right balance between experience and youth, however, those experienced players must bring something to the team. I like the movement of Higuain and think he is an intelligent player and has scored some good goals but again, he misses far to many. Will he improve next season after taking the second half of this one to acclimatise – no idea but it would seem that given the chance, Sarri would like to give him a go and see. IMO, for that to work we have to play more to Higuain’s strengths which I am not convinced we have been doing

Not just to focus on Higuain but we do need a prolific striker and there are other areas on the pitch where we can improve as well but by giving Luiz a contract extension (for example) implies that Sarri also expects to play him regularly as well. KTBFFH

To be honest we could have won a quadruple and still I would not be at all happy with the dross I have watched, in particular in 2019 from this side. There have been flashes of brilliance here and there but, in the main, disjointed looking, defensively frail, especially in 2nd halves and watching Sarri marching up and down chewing on his wacky tobaccy makes me cringe. If he stays on, next season will be interesting. I’d like to see him get a full summer window (providing we are allowed), buy the players he wants and have a full off season to make it happen. He deserves that much for sure BUT if it isn’t working out for him by say mid November pack his bags for him and get him out of there. I hope that doesn’t happen and the club’s plan is successful but ffs entertain us supporters. On a side issue I saw on TV today that City may be banned from the Champions League. Interesting reading on my google page. Serves them right. Give the League title to Liverpool as well, the League Cup to us and the FA Cup to Watford. Now that would be funny. FFP irregularities mean winning trophies by cheating. That needs to be reversed.

No chance Monty Sarri was instructed by the board to play the likes of RLC and Callum due to fan pressure, Italian coaches mostly prefer old experienced players but it could also be Sarri is mistakenly taking the clubs nickname “The Penshioners” literally.

I think we have to refer to 1905’s usual words of wisdom which are:

“Sorry, but you support Chelsea or you don’t and for me there is no middle ground regardless of whether you like the manager, the owner or individual players or not.”

Let’s also not fall into the trap of creating two distinct Camps on here which is not helpful to the site, we all support Chelsea Football Club and no matter what we all might think of the current Manager at the end of the day all of us only want what is best for Chelsea Football Club evening we have differing views on how that might be achieved.

Personally I’m still very unsure about Sarri but think given a 3rd place finish and 2 Cup Finals it’s only fair to give him another season and see where that takes us.

If the transfer ban is lifted I do think we have to tread carefully on who we buy and not fill the squad with Serie A players and aging players.

I don’t think Sarri’s attitude to young players is any different to any other Manager we’ve had during the Abramovich era where the pressure to win things and compete for the title or be sacked for failing to do so has seen very few young players been given a chance and arguably under Sarri more Chelsea produced young players have been given more game time although arguably the game time for RLC and CHO could have come as a result of both fan and Board pressure.

I think it’s going to be a suck it and see Summer and Season and realistically we are now miles behind City and Liverpool and shouldn’t expect too much too soon.

1905 it’s not about being down the middle, anyone is free support a club without having to watch the same old players messing up and yet being rewarded by getting selected again, if it’s like that again I will in future record all the games and if the outcome is favourable and not necessarily a win I will watch, if not I may still watch but probably not.

All bar the Europa League final and a game in the US the season is done so I think most of us will have a welcome break from everything (including these pages) and come back refreshed once the pre season starts.

Noted that the match in the US is live on Chelsea TV against the Revolution and at the most welcoming time of 10am Thursday (Sydney time),

Chris451, no I am not a fan of Sarri. I don’t like his football at all. Give me back our Mou’s defensive style. I like that a lot, solid defense, speedy and accurate counter attacks.

But if he goes, who will take over? Do we have a better candidate considering the transfer ban is very possible to happen? I was hoping fantastic managers like ZZ would be available but he is not. One person I want to replace Sarri is our own Lampard. But I have to agree with a lot of people here that it’s very risky considering his lack of experience.

And dunno who pressured him, he gave RLC and CHO game time. And he was more or less right about CHO: we should manage his game time, not overburden him. Look at him now, he is injured. The lad is only 18.

If Lamps comes to us to manage us, I would be happy. But who else would want to manage a club banned from all transfers?

67, I hope that the site won’t become completely deserted after the EL Final.

There’s still the transfer ban or transfer market to be sorted along with Sarri’s future, the shape of the squad with or without the transfer ban. All of which should take us through to pre season.😊

Aindro, I know you, like me, are are not a fan of Sarri. I can’t see it ever working out with him. An interesting article by Jose on Ajax
https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/mourinho-ajax-spurs-champions-league-16247190. This philosophy makes Jose a winner, and it is not used by Sarri. Jose knows that. I wonder if he is stirring the pot with us?Regardless I agree 100% with the comments Jose makes. I think Jose instilled this winning mentality in his players and us fans, and it was the key to success. Probably why we have this problem now with a Sarri
