I’ve been trying to read up a little on United scouts. Its not easy finding info. Couple of articles caught my attention.
Manchester United are considering a move for Liverpool midfielder Emre Can after encouraging reports from the club’s chief scout, according to reports. The Germany international is out of contract next summer and appears to have little interest in signing an extension to remain at Anfield, allowing him to leave the club for nothing. And, according to Italian publication Tuttosport, that has alerted United to his availability as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his midfield over the coming transfer windows.
The point I note is that it seems the fact he may be free is what prompts the interest more than his ability. In bygone days we would see a player we wanted then make an offer to get the player, irrespective of his contract status. Today we are looking at who is available ie player or club not extending contract.
And this report talks about the club having over 100 scouts worldwide searching for talent as young as nine. Add to that the club pays large sums to lure youngsters (parents) and can set the parents up with home and job etc in UK.
Given the worldwide scouts (there will be more if we add club and scout connections) how many homegrown have we produced through youth. How many bargain buys from small clubs. Seems to me the signings we have made mostly (all) come from agents offering (selling) their clients to us and United taking the player based on the agents sales pitch.
I’d love to compile a list of players who joined the club and those making more than 10 first team appearances not to mention those becoming regulars or stars even. We haven’t seen a star since Scholes and co.November 9, 2017 at 7:20 pm #1555950
The job of a scout has been usurped by agents who I regard as a cancer in the game. When football was parochial and confined to our shores, scouts were usually first and foremost fans. Not now. The majority are probably mercenaries just like agents – more concerned with lining there own pockets than the welfare of our team.November 10, 2017 at 9:11 am #1556060

Hahaha. Mind you, it highlights a point, scouts should be finding talent before they become internationals. Its hardly scouting if they are playing for their country.November 10, 2017 at 10:24 am #1556094
Sympathy for the DevilsParticipant
Scouting at the highest level is overrated – I’m convinced I could do a better job of scouting top level players for Man United than some of our so called “world class” scouts have done.
Even back in the day, it was obvious to the highest degree that Robben and Sneijder were world class talents and that Real Madrid screwed up big time for letting them go, yet we didn’t go for them and spent the next 6 or 7 years constantly wishing we had signed them.
And how on earth do our world class scouts miss players like Kante, Dybala, Higuain, etc constantly?November 10, 2017 at 10:43 am #1556101
Mac – Firstly, why do you believe the Metro article that says we’re in for Emre Can?November 10, 2017 at 10:52 am #1556105
@happy – I don’t necessarily but I do believe the club monitors contract expiry and players considering a move. That was my point. Its backed up by the players we’re linked with and club statements about availability.
Its not so much scouting as window shopping.November 12, 2017 at 6:43 am #1556512
Scouts? Do we have any? Like sympathy, I reckon I could do a better job scouting for United. Sane was a player I spotted at Schalke as a very good player way before citeh went for him last season. I really did hope our so called scouts would have spotted such a great young talent. My heart sunk when I heard he was heading down the road.
