After more European joy we move swiftly back to the marathon of the Premier League.
Southampton up next who looked so ordinary against Burnley with no threat at all. Their manager is my pick to get the first P45 of the season.
It’s only 4 months since we played them winning 3-1 at their place after coming from behind following, this will shock you, a Shane Long goal against us.
This game will be another homecoming for many of our players current and former (Crouch, Lambert, Clyne, Lovren, Mane, Virgil, Lallana and, erm, oozit, Paul Jones 15 years ago or so came from them too…bloody hell).
Very little recovery for our players (why our game and Chelsea’s weren’t scheduled for Sunday I don’t know and why last night had to go into extra time instead of right to penalties I don’t know). Anyway, it is what it is as a lot of folks say when they can’t add to a conversation or explain something. Three hours in all in that heat last night on top of a grueling pre season. Hope the boys were allowed at least a bit of a lie in this morning.
Southampton will be up for their first home game and the worrying open-ness to our game in recent weeks means Soton will create chances against us. Despite my concerns I think we’ll win this with the same score as last season, 3-1.
August 15, 2019 at 2:54 pm #1774930That 120 minutes really won’t help going into this game. Southampton are a really energetic side. We might see Henderson in the #6 after Fabinho’s cramp. I don’t think Salah will start after playing the full game. I think we’ll have to rotate and will set up something like this:
Adrian, TAA, Lovren, VVD, Robertson, Ox, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Origi, Mane, Firmino
August 15, 2019 at 4:38 pm #1774968I’d be amazed to see Lovren and Ox start but think Origi and Wijnaldum will.
August 15, 2019 at 4:49 pm #1774970There’s a few players that played a lot of mins last night with very little time for recovery. They will need to be managed.
A lot depends on the fitness of the likes of Shaq and Kieta.
Possibly a starting XI of…
Adrian
TAA, Matip, Lovren, Robbo
Milner, Fab, Gini
Shaq, Firmino, ManeWe could still have Hendo, Salah, Origi, Gomez etc on the bench.
Lovren is seemingly on his way out. If he does go he would be the 3rd senior player to leave the squad from last year without a single senior player brought in.
August 15, 2019 at 5:04 pm #1774972Is Keita still injured?
This was a horrible game last season. Like Chelsea last night, saints be looking to bounce back after a bad defeat
We need to make a few changes. I’d like to see Keita and Shaqiri start.
I think we will win but it won’t be pretty
Need a good organized defensive performance from our back 5
August 15, 2019 at 5:18 pm #1774976We must improve asap!! Some changes must be done but lack of bench or depth of the squad will cost us.
August 15, 2019 at 5:29 pm #1774977Keita being looked at by the medical team apparently for a muscle strain unless anyone’s heard anything new. He might not be risked even if he’s declared fit as it’s a similar injury to what effectively ended Sturridge.
August 15, 2019 at 6:06 pm #1774980This will be a tough game, but no reason why we cannot win it.
But in order to do so, we have to utilise the flexibility of our squad to the fullest. Thus I’d rest most of the players who played the whole 120 min yesterday.
Thus a lineup of our usual defence with Gini, Milner and Ox in midfield, plus Shaqiri, Firmino and Mane in attack – none of these 6 players played the whole 120 min. With strategic substitutions from the likes of Origi, Salah, Fabinho or Henderson.
Focus needs to be at the highest levels to get the 3 points
August 15, 2019 at 7:15 pm #1774991I’d be be inclined to start Keita if he’s fit for Saturday.
Reports seem positive.August 16, 2019 at 11:19 am #1775124Klopp staying Adrian is a doubt for this game after injuring his ankle due to a fan who ran on the pitch in the celebrations after the Super Cup victory.
August 16, 2019 at 11:24 am #1775126Lol ffs ginger. That’s all we need
Very tricky game this.
I’m
Sure a few players are exhausted after wedIt’s all about just getting the result tomorrow
August 16, 2019 at 12:44 pm #1775155There’s only one type of fan worse than the, throw our players under the bus when we don’t win, knee jerk scapegoating type.
And that’s the type who runs onto the pitch and injures our own players!Lets hope it’s nothing too serious.
August 16, 2019 at 12:50 pm #1775159So who is in goal if Adrian is injured for the game? I can’t remember us having this bad an injury crisis for GKs. Gonna be hard to get a win if we are tired but I remember last season Klopp sometimes preferred playing away as we played good counter attacking strategy. But have we got the legs for it this weekend? Players look knackered, saw a lot of misplaced passes against Chelsea. But also winning a cup can galvanise you too.
Unfortunately I don’t think we have the same level of fear factor compared to man city yet. When teams play city they don’t seem to attack them with the same belief as teams do when they play us. So we seem to have to dig deeper to get those wins against lesser opponents. But some of that is also self inflicted too as I sometimes wish klopp would utilize a ball running midfieder more often as we appear to lack cutting edge in midfield in some moments of the game.
August 16, 2019 at 12:53 pm #1775161August 16, 2019 at 1:39 pm #1775172Kelleher might get a call up.
August 16, 2019 at 2:05 pm #1775178He who isn’t worth naming, you have no idea the satisfaction I just got knowing I’m still in your head. I hope you remain salty for a while. I’d rather be a bad fan in your eyes than a coward and a weak man.
Ginger I think Klopp said before that Kelleher is still recovering from an injury and isn’t ready for first team Football, which is why we brought Lonergan in. Either way this is becoming a bit of a farce now.
August 16, 2019 at 2:10 pm #1775181Obvious reason given as Klopp pulls plug on Roma deal for Dejan Lovren
Lovren staying by the looks of it. Might get a start.
August 16, 2019 at 2:24 pm #1775185Looks like I was mistaken regarding Lonergan. Just saw some of Klopp’s comments regarding Kelleher. Quite excited to see what he can do tbh if He gets a start.
August 16, 2019 at 2:41 pm #1775195How did you know I was talking about you Razor?
August 16, 2019 at 2:47 pm #1775201Andy Lonergan – was at my old home town Rochdale last season! Have an able back up keeper in Mignolet who leaves after not getting a sniff for 18 months then our starter Alisson gets injured in the first game and now our back up courtesy of a fan. Can only happen to us!
