What is everyone’s view on chips via chippies? For a few years I feel like the standard is quite shit. For me, in the 80’s and 90’s there were good chippies everywhere. You use to get loads, they tasted really good and in general were just different. Maybe its the newspaper they use to wrap them in, but for years now they just not the same.

Speak for yourself, I have a great chippy just round the corner, actually drive past it on the way home and has been a regular Monday night dinner for ages, 1 piece of fish, 1 regular chips, curry sauce and mushy peas, and that does for two of us.

mufc…you need to spend more time in Grimsby and less time smelling your own fishy fingers you grubby little bugger.

Every time I’m back in the fair city I have no problems getting a decent chipper. What there are though are more low quality gaffs selling cheap shite alongside chicken nuggets and rat meat kebabs.

Posh fish and chips are on the rise too though.

For fish and chips the quality seems to rise the closer you are to the coast for obvious reasons I suppose. For me in Oxford the decent Kebab shops or chinese are the best bet for a decent portion of chips. Had a great Chippy in wales for our hols last year though. I think it really depends where you’re based. My best fish and chips is from harry ramsdens at the motorway services ffs.

Easy access to good quality raw materials H4rry, quite right. Best I’ve had was in Wales too, Swansea and the Mumbles to be precise.

dirtyharry – I agree about chips from a Chinese place, I usually get egg fried rice with sweet and sour prawns. I usually get some chips as a side, and they are of a higher standARD then English chippies.

Pie, chips and gravy from Lou Macari’s on your way to the ground.

We tended not to need to eat after a night out. Maybe some skittles. Skittles were always good.

The best fish ‘n’ chips are generally found in the south and south-west of England. These days it’s advisable to avoid the shops in central London. Generally, I think the further north you go the more chance you have of being disappointed. Many shops still fry using dollops of lard north of Filey. You may get lucky of course and find a decent chippy anywhere, but there’s more chance of consistency in the south and south-west of England. Put it this way, nobody in their right mind would ever dream of battering and frying Mars Bars down here.
Kebab shops in the UK should be a no-go for any semi-intelligent health conscious person. Nobody has the slightest clue what type or standard of meat they are consuming. It’s is not defined or controlled anywhere in the UK. The health and safety laws seriously need revision in this country. Places like Scandinavia have far stricter laws.
I’ll pass on Pie, Chips & Gravy and recommend the oldest established and best ‘fast food’ of them all. Pie ‘n’ Mash! Especially the shops that still use the original liquor recipe with stewed eel juice.
    Unbeatable!
    Lenny.

    Never been to Whitby, Leonard?

I’ve had pie and mash in the east end twice and both times it’s the most bland and underwhelming “local delicacy” I’ve ever had the misfortune to try. It was like eating nothing at all except for that vile sauce.

    That’s cockneys for you though.

I’ve been to Whitby quite a few times Gas. One of my cousins lives up that way. Unless it’s high summer you tend to get those cold easterly blows and it pisses down. It’s nice when the sun shines though, but it doesn’t happen that often.
To tell the truth mate, I get a nose-bleed every time I have to venture north of Watford. I can’t put my finger on it, but I suspect it’s got something to do with the stereotyped northern mentality. You know, pigeons, cloth caps, Coronation Street, rain, ‘hello chuck’, male chauvinism, more rain, etc. None of it rocks my boat.
It’s a pity you’ve had a negative experience with Pie ‘n’ Mash though, but don’t let it put you off. Next time you come down, try somewhere better, there’s lot’s of choice, but insist that the liquor is full of eel juice. You’ll love it! It really is the best ‘fast food’ that this culinary redundant country can offer. It’s certainly better that a battered fried Mars Bar. Enjoy…
    Cheers, Leo.

I don’t know why but I always forget you’re an Eastender Lenny…being born miraculously a stones throw from both Brisbane Road and Upton Park. You’re a historical and geographical marvel especially with all the Jewish refugees moving to Shoreditch after the Second World War.

I merely mentioned Whitby on account of its fish and chips, no need to create a family history for yourself.
