Thought I’d start a thread where we can put notes down on what might happen this summer.
I’ll start. We’ll listen to offers for:
Keita, Gomez, Minamino and Origi.
A big offer will come in from Real, Barca or PSG for Mane and Liverpool will accept it (80 million).
We will buy Bellingham from BVB for that price or more.
We will also buy a forward. No clue who it might be. We won’t pay the wages of an Mbappe/Haaland type player (imagine them two in your forward line…jesus). Haaland, obviously, the more realistic of the two but would want wages comparable to what Mo is asking (pure conjecture of course!).
Dybala’s name has been batted about as has Raphinha’s.
We could also sign another mid in the Rice/Phillips mould.
A surprise exit such as Kelleher may happen (he’s 24 this year, he may want a #1 spot somewhere).
Bobby could also be moved on but doubt it.
Any loanees will be sold to trim the squad and promote youth.February 16, 2022 at 4:14 pm #2055332
Agree that we may listen to offers for Origi, Minamino, Keita, Philips, Williams, Ox. We may see Milner move on also although there is talk of a new contract which I find perplexing.
I don’t think Gomez is going anywhere or Kelleher.
I think our front 3 situation is fluid, as in a lot depends on Salah accepting a new deal. I wouldn’t be surprised if both Firmino and Mane were sold but I don’t think we’re getting £80mil for either. Both will be in their 30s with a year left on their contract. I’ve said this before, I can see a situation where we sign one up to a new long term contract, sell one and either let the 3rd run down their contract or give them a short term extension. The way things are pointing it’s looking like Salah to sign up, Mane to be sold and Firmino to stay…but who knows.
So up front it could be Origi, Minamino and Mane out, Diaz already in followed by Carvalho leaving front options of Diaz, Jota, Salah, Carvalho, Firmino with Gordon knocking about too (perhaps go out on loan like Elliot did)
Diaz was meant to be a summer signing, we just did it earlier due to the Spurs interest. It’s looking like Carvalho will get done too. That’s a bit of an outlay there already. I think we’ll buy at least one quality midfielder. I’m not sure we’ll spend £80mil+ on the likes of Bellingham or Rice plus I can’t see Dortmund letting Bellingham leave the same summer as Haaland. I don’t see us doing any big purchases in defence, I think after Carvalho our main focus will be midfield with the likes of Tchouameni, Kessie, Neuhaus, Bissouma, Tielemans, Bellingham on the radar.
We may even do something like Kessie on a free & Tielemans (only a year left) this summer and then Bellingham the following summerFebruary 16, 2022 at 10:40 pm #2055614
I think Gomez will go if the right offer comes in. He won’t take losing his England place very lightly and he’s not going to willingly sit on the bench because him displacing these 3 is just not going to happen unless they’re injured. We already have a player who can cover both CB and RB doing well out on loan and he’s already HG. Isn’t Origi out of contract? Either way, it’s time he’s let go. Minamino has gotten some important goals so maybe he’ll be given 1 more season. Still think we’ll listen to offers for Firmino or Mane. I think Naby and Ox will run down their contracts. More likely to get a decent offer for the latter but his versatility might be useful in Klopp’s eyes. I think Naby’s done enough this season to earn another season. I don’t see FSG offering Milner anywhere near his current terms so my money is still on him leaving if he wants to prolong his career. I think if he stays, my guess is that we won’t buy anyone. Rhys might get another season out on loan. I hope Neco and Phillips can drastically increase their values in the next few months. Both are already making an impact. I’d send Bradley and Beck out on loan as well. Might do something with Woodburn because they have to offer him a contract anyway if they want the compensation but I don’t see it being likely.
As for incomings, I hope we get Carvalho over the line and start next season with at least 5 quality forwards + Gordon. Whatever happens in that scenario, I don’t really care. Hopefully the situation now will show them that they need it to compete on all fronts. I think another top class midfielder will complete this squad more or less. Really think Van Den Berg should be given a chance as a squad player at least next season.February 16, 2022 at 10:51 pm #2055631
I think it’s more likely we cash in on SVDB than we do on Gomez.February 16, 2022 at 11:00 pm #2055634
Gomez doesn’t even make the bench these days with a full squad and Klopp is clearly opting to use Milner as emergency cover at RB. Don’t see him sticking around especially with Konate emerging as a serious contender for a 1st team spot. Don’t really need him either because he hasn’t left much of an impression when he has been afforded the chance this season.February 16, 2022 at 11:06 pm #2055636
He was on the bench tonight.
Having 2 seriously injured centrebacks come back isn’t easy.
Particularly when 1 is your stellar player and you’ve just bought a new centreback.
Time will tell.
I think Klopp much prefers Gomez over SVDB by a long shot and I think Gomez knows his Liverpool career has a long way to go yet.
He’s younger than Philips.February 16, 2022 at 11:11 pm #2055638
Matip has generally been outstanding this season but he is uncharacteristically remaining injury free for now. An injury to Matip and Gomez is back in contention. Gomez is definitely no.4 of our 4 CB right now but he is home grown, very fast and has experience in going all the way in the league and CL. Hes also still young, younger than Phillips and we need 4 top rated CB if we want to go far in all competitions. Also owes us nothing, think we bought him for 3.5m 6/7 yrs ago. Would be mad to let him go.February 16, 2022 at 11:15 pm #2055639
Matip has been managed very well this season mainly due to the signing of Konate who can step in to give him recovery time.
It’s been very tough for Gomez coming back from serious injury, a new centreback arriving, Matip being managed better.
He needs games and rhythm but unfortunately so do the 3 fellas playing regularly while we chase 4 trophies in the business end of the season.February 16, 2022 at 11:29 pm #2055643
Yeah, I dont even think Klopp and the coaches expected Matip to stay fit and perform at the level he has this season. Its difficult because Van Dijk is a nailed on starter, Matip has been excellent and Konate hasn’t really put a foot wrong. Can’t really drop any of them for a very rusty Gomez. Expect he will just have to pick up the odd late cameo appearance and wait on an injury to one of the others. Might get a start in the FA cup v Norwich but he is going to have to be patient.February 16, 2022 at 11:39 pm #2055646
We’re allowed 12 subs onthe bench in the CL compared to 9 in the PL. Matip was also out with a serious injury yet he’s straight back in whenever he’s fit. Klopp gives players time to settle before he throws them in yet has favoured Konate from the beginning. Gomez was back in pre season the same time as VVD. It’s pretty simple, he’s fallen out of favour, rightly so, and hasn’t done enough in the manager’s eyes to come back in. That spot was very much his to lose and he lost it. This is 1 player, a clear out of favour 4th choice, who could realistically raise the money for a blockbuster signing like Bellingham.
As for players staying fit, a lot of that credit has to go to Dr Schlumberger for the work he’s done with player fitness. Matip staying fit is no accident and Henderson’s, Naby’s and Alisson’s improved injury records are just some of the indicators of this.February 16, 2022 at 11:43 pm #2055647
I’d very much like Bellingham….but he doesn’t play centre back. If Gomez was sold we would still need to sign another 1st team quality centre back, preferably homegrown….quotas and all that….so what’s the point in selling him.February 16, 2022 at 11:46 pm #2055649
We have van den Berg who’s doing very well out on loan and fits all the criteria. This is a player who’ll likely miss out on his England place because he isn’t playing at all. What’s happened to “he should go for his career”? Matip’s here until 2024 at least and Konate for the long haul.February 17, 2022 at 12:06 am #2055652
Matip wasn’t out with anywhere near a serious injury as Gomez
Gomez was out for 6mths of a season. Matip 4 and back almost straight away.
What I’m basically saying is there is no equivalence between Gomez and Matip injury seriousness.
The fantastic thing that Matip always had was the uncanny ability of coming back in and easily picking up where he left off. Vary rare trait. Quite unusual.
I guess only time and Klopp will tell what happens with Gomez.February 17, 2022 at 12:15 am #2055654
Phillips should go for his career, because while he did great work last year to keep us in top 4, he is not and is unlikely ever to be good enough to be a senior defender at this team. Gomez has already shown that he is capable of performing at the levels required, and barring injury he can still go up a few levels from there. VDB is still very much an unknown quantity and as far as his future goes, who knows but he is very much in the bracket of prospect and at no where near the level required to be considered among the top 4 defenders at liverpool.February 17, 2022 at 12:18 am #2055655
I loved what Philips did towards the end of last year.
Real heart and desire.
Unfortunately we’ve been unable to sell him for the £12-15mil mark for 2 windows now.
Hopefully this loan deal helps him to find a new home.February 17, 2022 at 12:55 am #2055656
VDB might be a prospect but so was Elliott last season. This season, he was widely written off in pre season but has now emerged as a senior player like Jones and Morton and just played the biggest game of his career so far ahead of the captain. VDB has 1 1/2 seasons of regular football under his belt now and has shown himself to be too good for that level. Before he signed for us, he was a regular in the Eridivisie and tipped to be De Ligt’s successor. Carvalho’s experience is pretty much limited to the Championship but he’s widely expected to make the jump to our senior squad next year. I would say that’s it’s more likely that he can make the step up now than previously. Prospects are meant to be developed.
Gomez isn’t going to quietly sit on the bench for the next few years in the hope that he’ll sporadically get some games when others are injured. That’s just wishful thinking. His level isn’t high enough at the moment and his development has stagnated over the past 2 years. Getting a sizeable amount for him while his stock is still high is just good business.February 17, 2022 at 1:02 am #2055657
A pretty good post there Rob. It’s hard to say what might happen. Mane is still very good but I don’t think we’ll get an 80m bid for him, without a lift in output from him. Back when he was linked to Real, he was scoring and assisting more. He was taking on defenders more etc etc.
He tried so hard to score tonight and was unlucky that he just couldnt get above the ball a bit more, for the header. If he carries that tenacity forward then I can see him scoring more goals but he doesnt always have that.
Firmino is on very high wages, so I wouldnt be shocked to see him go. When it came down to it tonight, he was needed though. I’ve said it to death previously though, he’s got to do this more often to earn those wages.
Us wanting to sign Milner us is a bit concerning TBH. It sounds like a delay in improving midfield, so although they arent directly interchangeable, I dont think we’ll do the required changes up front AND buy Bellingham, whilst signing Milner up on another year.
I say this but maybe FSG will have been slowly woken up by last season and also this season.February 17, 2022 at 1:06 am #2055659
