Wtching England vs Italy my end: whilst he’s good, I can’t see how Rice is worth pretty much our entire transfer budget for this year on his own.
June 12, 2022 at 8:17 am #2104638Frenkie De Jong will be a decent signing for Manchester United if he joins the club from Barcelona this summer – but his arrival would not strike fear into the hearts of anyone at Liverpool or Manchester City.
That’s the claim of former Anfield and England striker turned Mirror Sport columnist Stan Collymore, who reckons there could well be echoes of Donny van de Beek’s disappointing move from Ajax to United if his fellow Holland star is soon picked up by new boss Erik ten Hag.
Collymore said: “ Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie De Jong is completely underwhelming.
“He reminds me a bit of Martin Odegaard in the way he was trumpeted as, ‘The next big thing’, before moving to Spain and then failed to reach the heights expected of him. At least Odegaard was 16 when he joined Real Madrid, not 21, as De Jong was when he moved to Barcelona.
Unfortunately, I agree with you Stan.
June 12, 2022 at 9:21 am #2104651We are already shooting down De Jong if he decides to move to United. That is typical for fans to say so. At Barca he NEVER plays in the correct position. He normally plays at Ajax and The Dutch team. ETH would def let him play in his favorite position to bring out the best of him. With the right players around him, he would dominate the midfield. Looking at the bigger picture, last season we had who on the midfield????
June 12, 2022 at 10:36 am #2104671I don’t think anyone would argue that he’d be an upgrade on what we have. However, given our recent history of transfers, I also don’t think anyone will be clapping hands going ‘job done’ until a few months have passed, except happy that is.
June 12, 2022 at 10:52 am #2104678Watched him last night for Holland Loney, playing in his favourite role for Van Gaal and I honestly can’t see it mate. Not quick, not really a tackler, not a dribbler. Good passer of the ball but that should be a prerequisite for any footballer. Of course, he’ll be given time, but if Barca are happy to let him go so they can buy Bernardo Silva, says it all for me. He’s clearly not in the same class as Gavi or Pedri. Look, I don’t want him to be average mate, I just think he probably is. And he’ll cost a fucking fortune.
June 12, 2022 at 11:45 am #2104695Who is Timber?
June 12, 2022 at 1:26 pm #2104725De Jong is another lighweight same as VDB. Those 2 will get overrun in the PL and neither has any pace and that would take the small sum of over 100m for the pair! We would still need a DM cos McT & Fred ain’t good enough. Ten Haag needs to be very careful he doesn’t land us in even deeper shit before he’s even started.
June 12, 2022 at 1:29 pm #2104726Agree yorkshire and welcome back mate. Everything ok?
June 12, 2022 at 1:32 pm #2104727Having endured McFred and Matic for the last 3 years, getting a 25 year old who has a very good first touch, passes very well, excels taking the ball from the defence and initating attacks, and has played under our new manager for around the 70m mark will be really good business.
Thers are the first steps in a 3 year programme to get back challenging and a budget needs to be spent and stretched across multiple problem spots. Its a delicate balancing act.
We aren’t the United of yesteryear, we are miles behind the top 2, not in the champions league and no longer a draw for top players when multiple teams are in for the same player.
June 12, 2022 at 1:34 pm #2104728Rice does not want to come here. I dont blame him. We need to get over him.
June 12, 2022 at 1:47 pm #2104737Fair point moral and I hope I’m not saying I told you so by the end of the season mate. Not sure I agree about Rice though, I think he could be convinced to come as the main man of a rebuild of what is still the top English side historically and still a great lure for English players.
June 12, 2022 at 2:31 pm #2104750@Jim1502 Fair play to your comments, and we need to see what is the problem in the midfield. You could have a midfielder like De Jong, maybe a lightweight, but you could have a strong player to protect him, so he could pass the ball in the spaces to the attack. We have to keep in mind, that the EPL is a strong physical competition and you need to adapt to it. Looking at the situation at Barca. Gavi and Perdi are used to Barca system, they are getting Kessie from AC Milan too, a powerhouse, but looking at what you said in the last message from Rice, he’s the perfect person for United, but without CL, we are not even close to getting a chance of signing him!
If ETH wasn’t at United, maybe De Jong is a mistake, now he knows the trainer and that would be a plus plus to have to adapt quickly.
June 12, 2022 at 2:54 pm #2104757No doubt there are massive question marks over De Jong in the PL. The pressing and physicality in international football is nothing like the PL. I don’t think he has the physicality to play a deep midfield role in the PL week in week out. Won’t be surprised if he has to be pushed further forward after a few months.
I’d sell Donny and put the money to what is going to be spent on De Jong and try and get Rice. If he could choose then obviously Rice would go to Chelsea as his family are still season ticket holders and live in the area. He’s made that clear in several interviews but don’t think Chelsea will go in for him this summer. If we’ve any chance of getting him then it is now.
June 12, 2022 at 4:03 pm #2104782There’s no doubt De Jong would add quality to our midfield, but I’ll reserve judgement until I know how much we’ve paid for him. Anything over 50 million sterling will be daylight robbery in my view.
June 12, 2022 at 4:17 pm #2104783If they get him for that fee then it’ll be a great deal mate because that fat fuck Laporta will be looking to milk us for every penny he can get. Don’t doubt De Jung’s ability. The big question is whether he can dominate a midfield in the PL. He’s going to need someone beside him who’ll do the dirty work and that player is not McT.
June 12, 2022 at 4:53 pm #2104789Christian Eriksen or De Jong might be worth thinking of.
It frees up a lot of money for other positions.June 12, 2022 at 5:08 pm #2104794Would love to know what’s going on behind the scenes
Obviously we are in for de Jong and that deal won’t be quick but what the fuck have the club been doing about signing a CB, DM and Forward?
Think I know why RR is gone. He said we need 10+ signings and it looks like we’ll get a max of 3
June 12, 2022 at 5:25 pm #2104800Any idea when Greenwood’s trial has been set for? Was meant to be “mid June” which is next week. Wonder how a ‘not guilty’ verdict would affect our transfer plans
June 12, 2022 at 5:31 pm #2104804jm1502, I’m fine mate, just couldn’t be arsed posting about the abysmal performances and the shocking state the club is in! Hope that useless cunt Wudturd never works again!! Also, whoever runs this site, would you please do away with the zebra crossings, bicycles, traffic lights and whatewver else you clowns can dream up and also please ensure my password works first time every time in future which isn’t the case at the moment!
Regarding the midfield, I’m having nightmares already anticipating a midfield of VDB, De Jong and Bruno next season?????????????June 12, 2022 at 5:45 pm #2104809@Homer-Regardless of what happens with Greenwood legally, do you think he could ever play for the club again after what has come out and the shit that is in the public domain? In todays society, i can’t see how he’d be allowed to play again.
