I did not follow Derby, what was the formation FL used there? My feeling about what he will use at Chelsea: he will copy Mou’s formation.
Mou’s 4-1-2-3: Cech – Ferreira,Terry,Carvalho,Gallas (and then Cole) – Makelélé – Lampard, Essien – Robben,Drogba,Duff
Lamps’ : Kepa – Azpi,Luiz,Rudiger,Alonso – Kanté – Mount (RLC when recovered),Kovacic – Pulisic,Abraham,Willian (CHO when recovered)July 10, 2019 at 9:04 pm #1765456
Not many senior players on the field Bat’s scored the only goal of the game at half time.in case you curious and not following the team is:
Caballero, Azpilicueta, Ampadu, Guehi, Sterling, Gallagher, Drinkwater, Palmer, Kenedy, Pedro, Batshuayi. Probably lot of changes coming up for the 2nd half.July 10, 2019 at 11:56 pm #1765473
Only saw the highlight. 1-1 is not a good result as we still had Bats, Pedro, Azpi, Drinkwater, Bakayoko on the pitch. But this is our first match in the pre-season. It’s a good opportunity for FL to see as many players as possible to start to prune the team later on. We won’t win with all youth only, Frank Lampard has to find the right balance between youth and experienced players. I think we need goalscorer (hopefully Tammy) and also creative players to create opportunities. I think between Drinkwater, Bakayoko and Jorginho: at least one or two of them must leave.July 11, 2019 at 3:21 am #1765478
Absolutely meaningless as far as score goes. All about bonding and fitness.July 11, 2019 at 7:05 am #1765481
Of the younger players think for now only Abraham and Mount and maybe Reece and Tomori can expect enough opportunities, not counting those that played last season. From what I seen through various channels Billy Gilmour is the best prospect going forward though that also changes often.July 11, 2019 at 7:47 am #1765488
The pre season games are purely about fitness and player assesment by Frank and no one from Frank down should be worrying too much about the results,
Neither team selected bore any resemblance to our likely starting eleven v United and two completely different teams played in each half last night.
There were some encouraging performances by a number of the young players and what Frank is looking at is who is going to be good enough for his first team squad not just from the young players but from the returning loanees too.July 11, 2019 at 12:52 pm #1765601
Chelsea player ratings v Bohemians: According to the Daily Express)
Cabellero 6 (Cumming 45, 6)
Sterling 6 (Zappacosta 45, 6)
Azpilicueta 6 (Chabolah 45, 6)
Guehi 6 (Zouma 45, 7)
Kenedy 6 (Maatsen 45, 6)
Ampadu 7 (Baker 45, 7)
Drinkwater 6(Bakayoko 45, 6)
Gallagher 6(Brown 45, 6)
Palmer 6(Gilmour 45, 7)
Pedro 6 (Piazon 45, 6)
Batshuayi 7 (Ugbo 45, 6)July 11, 2019 at 1:13 pm #1765609
I would expect senior players like Luiz, Kepa, Barkley, Kanté to take part in our next pre-season match Saturday. I do think some pruning will be needed. We need players but we cannot keep as many players as we have during this pre-season. Agree with blueowner about youngsters who would likely make the squad, plus Ampadu and CHO. And other than youngsters, FL has to ship Piazon out (too long he’s been with us and he’s not able to make the team). Probably Kenedy must go too. Am not sure about Zouma if Azpi plays CB. I think Azpi will come back to RB as we have enough stock in CB: Luiz,Rudiger,Christensen,Zouma. My feeling is FL will retain Zouma, not selling him. But let’s see.July 11, 2019 at 2:24 pm #1765634
Absolutely Aindro we have 35 players out in Ireland and CHO, RLC, Rudiger, probably Reece James and Pulisic to be added to that.
But Frank is doing the right thing he’s looking to asses all the players both current first team squad, discarded like Drinkwater, returning loanees and young players first hand before making any decisions on his squad and has already said some will have to move on be that loan or by sale.
I expect the squad to begin to take shape on the tour to Japan.July 11, 2019 at 2:39 pm #1765644
Tweet from Arsenal fan Ahmed after Koschielny refuses to travel with Arsenal touring party to the US.
“Emery’s 5 captains:
Koscielny – refuses to play
Özil – not interested in Emery
Cech – joined Chelsea staff
Ramsey – moved to Juventus
Xhaka – half of fanbase want him sold”
And we thought we had problems.😊July 11, 2019 at 2:55 pm #1765654
999 Arsenal seem in a worse position than us, but we should not underestimate them. They can reinforce. And I still think that they are our main competitor for the top 4 spots together with Man Utd and Spurs. Everton may join the fight but we’ve been saying the same things for 2-3 seasons and they are never there (yet). Top 2 is IMO assured between Man City and Liverpool as they are miles above other teams in the Premier League.
If we can find our scoring boots (Abraham and Michy hopefully but as well as goalscoring midfielders that we don’t have since Lamps or goalscoring winger that we will need badly as Hazard is gone): we should be all right. We won’t be champion but top 4 should be possible. My main concern next season is the goals. Where they will come from. Our best goalscorer last season has left. Pedro could score but Willian is never prolific. Pulisic hopefully and CHO when he will return.
Drinkwater, I still think he won’t make the squad. Except if Lampard wants to recreate Leicester partnership with Kanté. But he is homegrown and we don’t have many of them. So many central midfielders but none of them can score except RLC who is injuredJuly 11, 2019 at 3:32 pm #1765668
Aindro, personally I’m not even thinking about top 4 in Frank’s first season I think this season is about Frank laying down the foundations , seeing who is capable of being promoted to the first team squad from the current young players, establishing CHO and RLC in the first team once fit and firming up on the way we are going to play which currently for next season looks like 4/2/3/1.
But of course if a CL place comes along I would be delighted but what I’m really looking for is progress on all of the above.
You’re right there are still question marks re the striker situation but this season we all have to accept that we can only solve it with what we’ve got and who knows we might suprise ourselves.
I think Chelsea now have a direction whilst Arsenal are in a mess and whilst Arsenal can reinforce they have a very limited budget and without they sell Aubemayang for a lot of money who is there best offensive players and would weaken them anyway they won’t be able to buy anyone of merit and they’ve lost Ramsey for nothing too.
I can see Emery becoming very frustrated at Arsenal and he may not go past the end of this season and where Arsenal go from there is anyone’s guess.July 11, 2019 at 3:50 pm #1765671
Disagree that preseason is just for fitness. We should be looking to win every game it’s very important to build that confidence. Frank Lampard said after the game: “We want to win the game, we always do”.
That being said the squad out there contained out 2 regular starters: Azpilicueta & Pedro. The rest of the match day squad were C & D team players trying to make an impression. 75% of that match day squad will be no where near the first team.
Conclusion: this result wasn’t important but Batshuayi scoring was important. I have a feeling we have a 15+ goal striker on our hands if we finally give him a real chance as we afforded for Morata.July 11, 2019 at 6:12 pm #1765688
bort, “Fitness was our issue, but I wanted to stretch them a bit and put them under pressure. This is what pre-season is all about, and the quicker we get there, to the level we want, then the better. We wanted to win the game as you always do but it is not about that.” Frank Lampard.
But you’re spot on with your overall summary.July 11, 2019 at 7:50 pm #1765704
999 agree. I hope Frank Lampard can rebuild the team this season and of course in order to do that he has to get a support from Roman Abramovich. I predicted Chelsea to finish 4th in the beginning of last season and we finished 3rd. It’s a surprise (a nice one!) for me that we finished above Spurs. I think this coming season we will finish 4th or 5th. I really hope two of Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd will mess up, very probably the latter two. But I reckon they have a good squad. Arsenal clearly have great goalscorers in Auba and Lacazette. So I won’t underestimate them at all. Man Utd would probably be in a bigger mess with Pogba and Lukaku saga. But once they are able to sell those 2: they will have money to buy new players.July 11, 2019 at 11:12 pm #1765725
Aindro, I truly admire your optimism mate good on yer. I would be delighted if we can finish in the top 4 this season but hand on heart I’m not expecting it this season. Hope you’re right though.😊 Cheers 999July 12, 2019 at 1:20 pm #1765853
999 I am not sure. I just think our squad should still be good enough. But it will depend on Frank Lampard’s adaptation, on whether we can score goals or not, on a lot of factors TBH. Whether Arsenal and Man Utd will reinforce or not…
This is what I found last night, the pruning has started: Chelsea returning players to London : Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah, Dujon Stering, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Baker, Lucas Piazon, Izzy Brown and Ike Ugbo. As expected Piazon won’t make it, Izzy Brown won’t make it, together with some youngsters who will either return to the youth team or to be loaned somewhere else. I expect at least two more prunings will come.
Another problem is injuries. Season hasn’t even started and Kanté is carrying an injury and is training separately in Ireland. Willian is injured currently, from Copa America. And the casualties from last season: Rudiger, CHO, RLC as well as Reece James. IMO this is worrying.July 12, 2019 at 1:41 pm #1765865
Aindro, agree with all of that mate and I’m not surprised Frank has begun to cull some of the players and he has the wisdom of Jody, Joe Edwards and Eddie Newton to call upon and there will be one or two more yet because that leaves 27 players with Willian and Pulisic to come into the squad plus ultimately the 4 injured players too.
Things will get even clearer with the naming of the squad for Japan.July 12, 2019 at 3:36 pm #1765905

Just an honest question but I assume older senior players are not allowed to be sent home early despite poor form? Or do the contracts also play a part.
