Just reading about Juan’s little plan, take a bow son! It seems to have been well received among many in the footballing community and apart from the practical benefits, will also go some way to perhaps convince Joe Public everybody in the football malarky isn’t just a bit of a tosser. Well done Jaun!

For people who have no idea what is going on (yes, I’m talking to you Steve-no-idea), Juan has pledge 1% of his salary to the “Common Goal” charity, which in turn assists with another 120 football charities worldwide, and is doing his best to spread the word and get as many of the footballing community to join in to.

fantastic human being Juan Mata which makes me wonder why in heavens name did he want to go to United-at the same time if I was earning that kind of money I would probably give more but to charities that can be trusted.

That’s what I was thinking notnice, if I earned £5m a year, I would be giving more than £50k a year to good causes. I assume the majority of footballers do donate though, although I might be being a bit naive. It’s not like Mata has invented charitable actions lol

It’s good to give to charity, but a lot more admirable when you remain anonymous while you do it.

well I would definitely prefer to be anonymous-otherwise you will get every dick charity asking for donataions.

Looks like another big name will be announcing he’s doing the same later today and they are hoping for more to follow. Doesn’t look like it has caught on among his own team mates mind you.

It might sound tight he’s only giving 1% or blowing his own trumpet by going public but from what I’ve heard he’s trying to start a movement and make it common place among footballers to make this contribution. Doing it on the quiet wouldn’t help that and nor would setting the bar high at 5% or 10%.

Either way, fair play to Mata, seems like a sound bloke trying to do some good whilst improving the image of footballers.

Wonderfuel, you make a good point about why he may be doing this so publicly but what I was really getting at is that most people do give anonymously. This thread seems to suggest that Mata is the only footballer who’s ever given to charity (and should ‘take a bow, son’). That just isn’t the case but most footballers (and, indeed, most celebs) don’t feel the need to announce it to the world when they give money away, whether for altruistic reasons or not.

And it’s hardly the worthiest of causes, is it? How about donating to a hospital? Or getting some food to families who don’t know where their next meal is coming from? Don’t get me wrong, it’s good that he’s giving to any charity and, for all any of us know, he gives away a lot more that we don’t know about, but lets not go overboard about him giving away money he can very easily afford to give away. He could give away 90% of his salary and still live more comfortably than most.

Again, not saying he doesn’t do more that we don’t know about but I’d wager that most people who give to charity, even if it’s not quite 1% of their salaries, feel a much bigger impact on their own finances from doing so than Juan will from his. He’ll still be able to buy himself a new Ferrari when he gets bored with the current one.

The title of the thread was just a bit overboard and the apparent assumption that only those who announce they’re giving money away, actually are, is a false one.
