We need at least a point from this game ideally 3.
Mount and James to start with Azpi moving to left back?
The games are coming thick and fast now and Frank could do with a fully fit squad to choose from.November 25, 2019 at 3:19 pm #1802146
A big match. All 3 have same points. I think we have no choice but to win this match. And looking at the first match where we missed a penalty, I think it should be possible. I am not sure about the criteria if more than 1 team end up with the same points. If we win this match: we will qualify I think. But if not, we may need to go into technicality to qualify (goal difference, head-to-head, whatever, I am not sure anymore what the criteria are)November 26, 2019 at 11:06 pm #1802543
Writing on the wall for Alonso seemingly fit but not in the travelling party for the Valencia game?November 26, 2019 at 11:12 pm #1802546
As Frank said it’s a must not lose game our last game is at home to Lille whilst Valencia are away to Ajax if we finish level on points with Valencia we’re out because it’s decided on head to heads.
A 2 nil win would be brilliant tomorrow night and see us qualify too as Valencia could only match us on points and our head to head would be better. A lot to ask for though and it will be a tough game.November 27, 2019 at 1:54 pm #1802727
Predicted team from football London: Not sure it will be that far off:
Kepa; James, Tomori, Zouma, Azpilicueta; Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic; Willian, Abraham, MountNovember 27, 2019 at 2:09 pm #1802735
I am not sure that FL will leave Pulisic on the bench. If we win against Valencia: we will qualify. Kanté, Jorginho, Kovacic all 3 DM in our midfield seem a bit too defensive to me. It will be a tight match for sure, Valencia beat us at home. But we’ve improved since. We beat Ajax away. I would play Mason Mount with Kante and Jorginho (bench Kovacic) and add Pulisic to increase our firepower. Probably to balance defensively: Azpi RB and Emerson LB, James would come from the bench. I am not a fan of Emerson but he is our natural LB.
My team: Kepa – Azpi,Zouma,Tomori,Emerson – Kanté,Jorginho,Mount – Pulisic,Abraham,WillianNovember 27, 2019 at 8:06 pm #1802841
We were lucky with the draw. Valencia were the better team; they created dangerous chances that they missed. And the missed penalty. A bit disappointed with Kepa with their 2nd goal even though his penalty save was brilliant. He got beaten twice like that, from a cross: Ziyech last time and now Wass. My mistake wanting to bench Kovacic as he was our MoM today.
Our defense was worrying. Christensen and Zouma were far from solid and Reece James were not good enough yet defensively. I think only Azpi today performed well wherever he played. And we already played with 3 DM, our defense was like gruyere cheese with holes everywhere.
Substitution wise, I think FL got it all wrong. Michy he did not have a choice as Tammy got injured. But Emerson did not add anything. Nor Mount as we would have needed Willian with his speed and technique more than Mount at that stage of the match. Pedro would have probably helped better than Mount.
Anyway, our group is far from over. I think we will qualify if we win at home next match against Lille assuming Ajax will win tonite against Lille.November 27, 2019 at 11:06 pm #1802881
“We nearly won it, we nearly lost it. It’s very difficult to come here and get something and it is a positive that it’s still in our hands.”
Probably the perfect summary by Frank.
It’s in our hands v Lille at the Bridge.November 28, 2019 at 2:06 am #1802884
Riveting end to end stuff and I was exhausted by the end of it just sitting back watching it We need to be thankful for the draw in my opinion and thumbs up to Maxi Gomez for two inexplicable misses. Willian had one of his not so good games. I found myself cursing him a few times. More recently he has been really good but not so tonight sadly.November 28, 2019 at 8:01 am #1802893
Some worrying aspects for sure 67. We were far too open at times imo which made Valencia look better than they are and the injury to Tammy didn’t help us either.
Great save from Tammy by Cillesen and straight from that Valencia scored and the second Valencia goal was a cross but they all count.
We rode our luck at times but it’s still in our hands beat Lille and we’re through to the last 16.November 28, 2019 at 10:09 am #1802952
If both last day matches in the Group stage were drawn what happens then? Is there a count back between us and Valencia on our matches with them which means we are 3rd because we lost 1-0 at the Bridge?November 28, 2019 at 10:30 am #1802962
If we draw we out cause we lost against Valencia first game unless Valencia lose. I don’t know why someone saying Reece had a bad game, understand if u say it was Christiansen and Zouma but Reece was greatNovember 28, 2019 at 1:13 pm #1803022
We won’t draw!
You heard it here first!😊November 28, 2019 at 1:24 pm #1803032
We have to win at home against Lille. Moos: if we draw: we’re not necessarily out; we’ll still qualify if Ajax beat Valencia. But it will be dangerous as if they draw: Valencia will qualify as 2nd ahead of us due to head-to-head record even though we’ll finish with the same points. That’s how I understand it.
About Reece James, I think he is good in attack, not so good in defense yesterday. Any news of Abraham’s injury? Will he be out against West Ham?
While Kepa was not at fault for their 1st goal, I’ve already seen several times that he was able to get a hand on the ball but not firm enough. I think he has to improve on that. As well as on crosses. It’s really bad that he’s got beaten twice from crosses.November 28, 2019 at 1:52 pm #1803043
Seemingly good news on Tammy subject to scans etc. I’m not sure either Michy or Giroud are adequate replacements.November 28, 2019 at 2:45 pm #1803068
999 agreed. Giroud and Michy aren’t an adequate replacement for Tammy. They have their own strength but I have to say they aren’t complete strikers. Giroud has physical strength, good hold-up, good headers but lack of speed, lack of finishing. Michy has speed but cannot hold the ball and his overall game is poor IMO. I can see both gone the latest summer and we are in a market for a new striker to complement TammyNovember 28, 2019 at 3:38 pm #1803088
These were the ratings by a very respected sports media: Arrizabalaga – 4
Reece James – 6
Andreas Christensen – 3
Kurt Zouma – 5
Cesar Azpilicueta – 5
Jorginho – 4
N’Golo Kanté – 6
Mateo Kovacic – 7
Willian – 5
Christian Pulisic – 7
Tammy Abraham – 6
Don’t know what everyone else thinks.November 28, 2019 at 4:03 pm #1803098
I wouldn’t give Kepa 4 honestly, I would give 6. He saved a penalty !! And a good save, not a trivial one. He saved also a sitter in the first half. He dealt pretty well with crosses except the one from Wass that was obviously a mishit.November 28, 2019 at 6:56 pm #1803145
Aindro I think his ball distribution was also poor they almost scored twice cause of that maybe that’s why but the penalty save was brilliant.November 29, 2019 at 7:50 am #1803213
Kepa has made a few mistakes but what Keeper doesn’t and the Wass goal was a fluke.
Fabulous save by Kepa for the penalty though and without that save we would have probably been looking at likely elimination from the CL.
I’m not sure who the “very respected sports media” was but that save alone and the importance of it meant Kepa deserved more than a 4 imo.
