I’m late to the party as I watched the game on the replay.
Disappointing that we couldn’t hold on to the win but as I’m sure others have said already, I would have taken that result beforehand.
Good that we changed the formation for this match, 4-2-3-1 hadn’t been working previously. Very good first half, second half was expected given we were playing against the most in-form team in the world and had so many injuries. MOTM is a toss-up between Rashford, James and Pereira. But pretty much everyone played well I thought. Young was very good up until the mistake I thought.
Lee Dixon said, interestingly, that Rashford would get 40 goals a season if he was playing with Scholes, Giggs and Beckham. I don’t think he’s far wrong, I definitely think he would get 20-30. And goals aside, Rashford brings a lot of other things to the table. Five years ago, was Firmino a better players than Rashford is today? I doubt it, yet now he’s an integral part of a CL-winning side.
As for Ole, this match never had any bearing either way on his status as the manager. Hopefully we can build on this in the upcoming games, we’ll see. I’m still Ole In, as like I’ve said, I simply don’t see finishing 5th or 6th as worth yet another managerial change. I think the main focus now has to be the next transfer window because surely everyone can agree that we need more signings irrespective of who the manager is.
IMO if we stay clear of the relegation zone Ole is the best option to oversee that window, rather than bringing in someone else with different opinions on who to sign etc. There’s been a lot of chopping and changing already , we need to continue this rebuild properly and then make an assessment further on.
October 20, 2019 at 11:17 pm #1792576– Pukki or Wilson
– Håland
– McGinn
– DLP/CDMThose signings would completely transform this team. I’m telling you all. And we would move up the table PLUS have a go at the Europa League. We can agree to disagree on Ole as the manager, but IMO we should all agree that new signings has to be a major focus. Yes four signings in January would be more or less unprecedented but we have had two consecutive summer transfer windows where we should have signed the double amount of players that we did sign.
Håland plus Pukki or Wilson would effectively be the replacements for Lukaku and Sánchez. So not unreasonable at all IMO. Yes we have Greenwood too but he’s not yet ready for much more than cup games and substitute appearances.
Hopefully against Norwich we’ll see attack attack attack. The tactics Ole deployed when he first came in. If he can get back to that and get the backing he needs in terms of more transfers then I can totally see him turning things around.
October 21, 2019 at 8:05 am #1792605Fair enough Happy. Didn’t see the point in your comments other than to try and make me look like a cunt. But it’s nothing personal so we can leave it at that.

united_we_win ..No predictionOctober 21, 2019 at 8:58 am #1792626All things considering that was a pretty amazing result yesterday. Liverpool are light years ahead of us, beat team in Europe currently. And we have been dogshit for weeks, putting in absolutely horrendous performances against the likes of West Ham and Newcastle.
Such a shame we couldn’t hold on for the win but hopefully this gives the players and everyone at the club a bit if a lift. If we can get some injured players back now maybe we can hit a bit of form and start picking up some points.October 21, 2019 at 9:05 am #1792627Certainly need to build on that. Problem is teams will revert to sitting back and making it hard for us to break them down and that’s where we struggle.
October 21, 2019 at 9:38 am #1792642If maybe then perhaps ….. several tipped a United win or draw precisely because (as a poster pointed out) current form, league position, team strength etc. go out of the window for a United Pool game, its like a cup game where anything can happen.
And it follows that the result of the game be it win lose draw is meaningless as an indicator of how things will be next week. The concept of “building on” doesn’t exist outside of fans imagination.
October 21, 2019 at 10:05 am #1792669Teemu Pukki? For Man Utd? Take your head out of your arse CR. Teemu Pukki is so far away from a United standard centre forward it’s not even funny. Plus, he’s 29 years of age. He’s way too bloody old to be signing if we’re looking for young, hungry players. I’m delighted to see we’re being linked with Timo Werner, 23, German international, hard working and explosively quick.
October 21, 2019 at 10:42 am #1792689MacGuffin – Next week and the game after is what worries me. We never lost to Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal.
I just find this really strange.
October 21, 2019 at 11:22 am #1792703killyboye,
I’ve been calling for us to sign Werner for a long while now. At least this past summer, maybe even the summer before. I would be very happy if he signed as he can also play RF I think. I’m actually not even sure I would prefer Sancho to him.
Pukki being 29 isn’t a bad thing because he’d be s short term signing while the likes of Greenwood is eased into the team. He has 6 PL goal already this season you know. Hardly far away from United standard when you consider our lack of goals.
-Håland
-Werner or Sancho
-Pukki or Wilson^That should be our transfer business as far as forwards go IMO. Pukki or Wilson is there to add a bit of experience which I think we are currently lacking up front.
We’ve obviously already let go of Lukaku and Sànchez, so that leaves two places. I think the jury is also still out on Martial. Even though he’s a very talented player the question remains if he is the right player for United (maybe, maybe not). Plus, maybe Greenwood will go out on loan at some point and in any case, like I said he cannot be relied on consistently yet.
October 21, 2019 at 2:03 pm #1792766My problem with Pukki is that he might be a flash in the pan. He had a good season in the Championship last year and a few good games at the start of this season and his return of six goals comes from his opening five matches of which three were against Newcastle, and he hasn’t scored or assisted since 14th September. That’s four scoring returns in 9 games. I’d also be wary of Haaland given it’s one season. I think we’ve gone overboard on players like that before, Depay for example, we need to make sure that players are properly scouted and we do our due diligence on them, to use a business term.
Yes, there’s room for two strikers in our squad but we shouldn’t be looking at specific short-term thinking. That’s what I like about Werner, he’s young but he’s been around the block, we should be looking at more like him, between 23 and 26 who can handle the pressure and know the value of hard work.October 21, 2019 at 2:11 pm #1792770Against Partizan we surely have to rest pretty much everyone that are expected to start against Norwich.
Martial Greenwood
Mata
Lingard Matic Garner
Williams Rojo Jones Dalot
RomeroIt is a good opportunity to get the likes of Martial up to speed. We cannot keep starting the likes of Rashford every game. We are already in a good position in the EL group and need to focus on the PL just now.
Bring on the likes of Gomes and Chong as substitutes as well.
October 21, 2019 at 2:18 pm #1792772Wilson is an interesting one. Reckon we could get him off Bournemouth in January.
Is he good enough though?October 21, 2019 at 2:25 pm #1792774killyboye,
“his return of six goals comes from his opening five matches of which three were against Newcastle”
Well, we could have used three goals against Newcastle as that would have given us three more points from that game!
Håland is much better than Depay. Depay is a decent player interested in bodybuilding and expensive clothes/cars. Håland is a potential top class striker who is already doing well at the CL level. Pace, acceleration, strength, finishing, poaching, hold-up play – he’s a fantastic prospect and also realistic target. Signing him should in no way be a deterrent to signing Werner as well. They are not mutually exclusive players.
James, Rashford, Håland, Werner, Martial, Greenwood
That is some strike force. Though like I said the jury is out on Martial as a title-winning forward and Greenwood might go out on loan. And if we do sign a more experienced striker like Pukki or Wilson as well it would only be for the short term while the likes of Greenwood develops.
October 21, 2019 at 2:29 pm #1792775happyhurling,
I think he is definitely good enough to be a stop-gap short term solution. He’d be a needed extra cover and likely give us a few extra goals here and there.
For me Håland and Werner or Sancho are a must going forward. Pukki or Wilson should actually already be at the club. So they are also a must, especially if Martial were to be sold and Greenwood loaned out.
October 21, 2019 at 6:13 pm #1792839This is refusing to go away…..
October 21, 2019 at 7:04 pm #1792849Timo Werner is a top player with bags of pace but he’s not a prolific goalscorer. Agree with Gary Neville though, Lukaku type strikers are not for us. I think Ruud’s the only one that worked out. But the game’s changed, we need that mobility and flexibility up front like the scousers, and from that perspective Werner fits the bill. But we need at least two additions in midfield as well, or it’ll all add up to squat.
October 21, 2019 at 7:45 pm #1792859Werner can play as a winger as well. Two footed too
October 21, 2019 at 8:51 pm #1792875By the way, watched that Lallana goal again. Yeah, maybe Rojo got attracted to the ball but Ashley Young was behind Lallana all the way and had him in full view, but basically stood there and watched as he moved in behind Rojo and tapped it in.
