This hypocrite is getting the excuses in early. Can someone remind him he spent 250m in 2018? Off the top of my head Liverpool have spent big-ish money in the last 4-5 seasons on Benteke, Fiminho, Mane, Wijnaldum, Van Dijk, Salah, Ox, Alisson, Keita and Fabinho. All 30m or higher. Every successful club spends money. So this guy shouldn’t start his mind games now.

I like Klopp and have a lot of respect for him but a decent journalist would have reminded him Liverpool’s recent success was very much based on the signing of three players Alisson, Van Dijk and Fabinho at a combined cost of circa £180m paid for primarily out of the Coutinho money.

Which is exactly what Chelsea have done this Summer with their signings paid for primarily out of the Hazard, Morata, Palasic and Luiz monies and it followed a transfer ban too.

Klopp is not managing a team of home growns bar Trent Arnold they were all purchased and the team that beat Spurs in the CL Final cost £331m £202m more than their opponents that night according to the Daily Mail figures.

In respect of City their net spend so far in this window is marginal when you take into account the money received for Sane.

Only Klopp knows why he said what he did but I’m not sure he thought it through.

I do though agree with Klopp’s sentiments that you just can’t buy players and expect an immediate response it will take time for the players Chelsea have bought to settle in and blend with the squad/team as well as a lot of work on the training ground. Look at Pulasic we didn’t see the best of him until the second half of the season.

I don’t think Klopp has to worry too much about Chelsea this season the title race imo will still be a race between Liverpool and City.

In fairness to Klopp, i’m sure he was being asked what he was going to do this window, and chelsea have been the most active, so not unreasonable to say we’re not going to be doing that. Whether we have spent money in previous season is largely an irrelevance. Also might be an attempt to get under Lampard’s skin after his Tantrum last season.

Harry, had Klopp said what you’ve said above it wouldn’t have caused a ripple but Klopp went a lot further than that

I think you’re probably right it was probably motivated by the touchline tiff with Frank last season which is a shame given what Frank said the other day ‘I definitely didn’t mean any disrespect to Jurgen Klopp, because I’ve got huge admiration for them. But what I felt had gone on, it was an impulse reaction, which I will happily – when I do see him, I’ll put that one right.”

I think you’re wrong about the relevance of the comparisons Liverpool’s strategy predominatly utilising the Coutinho money to improve the team is exactly the same strategy as Chelsea’s strategy of predominantly using the money from the sales of Hazard, Morata etc to improve the team and it was integral for Liverpool in both the CL and PL achievements.

Teamtalk have a lead article today which confirms how Chelsea have been able to spend what they have this Summer which is very different to Klopp’s take on it.

Both Clubs have trod the same path in relation to improving their teams and Chelsea have a history of selling to buy.

Tbh it’s all handbags and TMA in creating the thread is just using it as a stick to beat Liverpool with which is his favourite pastime.

Chelsea fans just have to hope that who Chelsea have bought this Summer ultimately has the same effect as the major Liverpool signings did. 😊

You know I don’t begrudge any team spending 9, quite the opposite. However Klopp did mention the current uncertainty, we didn’t sign any of the players you mentioned during a global pandemic. Again though, I have no issue with Chelsea’s spending, I just don’t think Klopp is being as hypocritical as being made out.

Harry, but he did the same.😊

I guess the difference as the Teamtalk article points out is that Chelsea were already sitting on the cash and moving now when other Clubs may not have been able to move meant we were able to sign players that we may not have been able to sign were it not for Covid.

Smart business imo adding quality to what we already had and what we’ve got still coming through its exciting times at the Bridge.

No I know. But I just think football gets a bad rep for the amount of money thrown around, so during a pandemic when people are losing jobs, and businesses are going under. I see it as mind games rather than hypocrisy.

Liverpool did do the same. Its damned if you do, damned if you dont. Every pundit and fan under the sun was saying we wont win anything without sorting the defence and keeper. Then when we do, its buying the title. A phrase I despise by the way. Even if you spend 100m on a player. Said player along with the rest of his team still has to work his socks off to win the league.

Harry, the bulk of the money was there pre the pandemic from player sales Chelsea couldn’t spend it last Summer because of the transfer ban which is why they are spending it now.

If it was mind games from Klopp perhaps Chelsea should take it as a compliment.😊

I’m sure if Chelsea eventually go on to win the title everyone will claim Chelsea bought it too that’s the way it’s always been and it goes with the territory.

Whether you want to admit or not 9, Chelsea are a threat next year. It is your prerogative to do Sean though, and play down expectations.

Chelsea will be at their best in the new year, and won’t drop enough points between the start and then, to be counted out IMO.

Harry, depends how quickly the new players gel if we can have a decent first half of the season like you I think Chelsea could have a stronger second half of the season.

Glenn Hoddle predicted Chelsea challenging for the title within a couple of seasons and that was before the signings.

I still think that’s more likely but I agree with you about the second half of the season look how Pulasic came on last season once he settled so if Chelsea are there or there abouts at Christmas it could be interesting.

@NULU – Made plenty back through player sales though !!

Chelsea sold Hazard for 140+mn I guess. Morata 50mn. not to forget multiple other players Chelsea have sold. if Liverpool fans want to bring in Coutinho money, same applies for Chelsea. Klopp has no excuses he has spent a decent amount of money

This Klopp lad is either demented or stupid. He has spent half a billion – and bought 27 players since he arrived – all in 4 yrs – Reality check

Liverpool are going to flop hard this season. No crowds, less motivation, rivals have strengthened and worked out their system. Going to be another 30 years I’m afraid!
