Sean, as positive as I am about next season (given how we finished this), the worries about the defence and now midfield hang heavy in the air. There’s a very strong lesson learned here but the worry might be not in us fully appreciating it but perhaps we might struggle to afford to adjust.
We’ve got to go into this season not only wondering about Matip and Gomez, unfortunately we’ve got no choice but to add Van Dijk to that list, because you just don’t know how well he’s healed, until he’s gotten a good number of games under his belt.
What does this mean? If we can’t afford to get 2 cb’s and at least 1 midfielder (admittedly, we’d get some money in for sales) then do we look for a loan option? I think there’s absolutely zero chance that we could arrange a loan deal for Kabak again. Surely there will be a host of teams looking to buy him? Im not saying he’s a world beater but the lad was not only very impressive, he had a nightmare start and it didnt phase him at all, he shook it off and I thought his decision making after that point was really good and not only for a young lad, which is especially impressive because this is an experience issue usually.
it does seem that we’re not going for him though and in a way i feel bad for the guy. he did mso well and still doesnt get what he came to achieve. He’ll get some good team though at least.May 25, 2021 at 9:38 pm #1957436
Konate for 50k would indeed be excellent business! Sarcasm aside, I think 1 thing United have done well is signing ageing top class players for free on short term deals to sort of squeeze the last bit of quality out of them. I think that’s value in the market that no one really wants to exploit. It’s worked pretty well for them so far with Ibrahimovic and Cavani. As for midfielders, I think Arthur Melo from Juve would be a superb option for a decent fee given that he isn’t really a regular there. Also like Tolisso from Bayern but don’t see them letting him go. I think that’s the kind of market we need to be shopping in.May 25, 2021 at 10:41 pm #1957456
Sean… Gomez luck has to change, he has filled his quota with freak injuries…
You never see him out with a muscle problem, its a broken leg or something…May 26, 2021 at 8:02 am #1957490

Ye but he’s still injured for a good bit every season since he joined in 2015 bingo chumMay 26, 2021 at 8:49 am #1957505
He’s had 3 major injuries in the last 5/6 yrs, along with a few minor ones.
It’s how much these injuries have taken outta him that we need to be mindful off.May 26, 2021 at 12:28 pm #1957591
How well our cbs have recovered from their injuries will be a big question next season. Ive given up on matip i think he will always have injury problems. The most he’ll play on the trot is 2 games and then he gets injured. Im not that confident on gomez either. Vvd is coming back from a serious injury and we dont know how he does. Konate’s injury record well they dont exactly instill confidence either.May 26, 2021 at 1:37 pm #1957612
Look on the bright side, there’s still Philips/Williams partnership that did not do too badly in our last 5 gamesMay 26, 2021 at 1:45 pm #1957620
Gomez is fucking jinxed while on international duty, that’s where his serious injuries have occurred. Perhaps he should retire from international footaball. LOLMay 26, 2021 at 1:48 pm #1957621
We should be signing konate and Kabak. We have no idea how long before Van dijk is back to his best. We know Matip will never be a reliable starter at this level and while we’ve had 20 different CB pairings this season, it’s not like klopp to rotate much at all. Phillips has been great….but he is limited. I’d happily keep him but if we do will he play much, and is that fair to him, put him in the bracket of Conor Coady. Philips could be guaranteed starter at newcastle or villa but he will never be that here. Best not to make the same mistake as Origi with Phillips! Yes hes been a hero and he has now taken his chance, made himself seen and can go on to have a meaningful career or he can sit on our bench for 2 or 3 years and never grow.
In my opinion our best option is 1.Van Dijk 2.Gomez 3.Konate 4.Kabak
Matip and Philips should move on, even for the benefit of their own careers. In theory their sale would fund Konate and 20m for Kabak is a no brainer. We’d then have 3 established cb under 24 learning from the master Virgil.May 26, 2021 at 3:15 pm #1957652
If you were a rival club, would you risk buying Matip on his wages with his injury issues?May 26, 2021 at 3:55 pm #1957672

Razor, Gomez is simply an ‘option’ for right back (don’t want him there as his positional sense at RB is always questionable) but he’s an option if Trent needs a week off. There’s not many that can replicate what either Trent or Robbo do and if there is do they want to play second fiddle for much of the season – I doubt it, so as of now, when Gomez is back, we have Neco, Milner and Gomez who can slot in there if need be for a game or two. We would just maybe have to tweak formation and go with more support out wide when that happens (4231 for eg.).May 26, 2021 at 11:34 pm #1957880
Seen James Pearce report that we won’t be moving for a FB. I really hope Neco and Tsimikas improve significantly this summer. Again Rob, Milner and Gomez are players that can play there, but can’t offer a similar style to Robbo & TAA. Milner especially doesn’t really have the legs anymore to fill in long-term if required. I still think that we’d be better served with a quality 3rd option instead of having a number of players who can only fill in.May 26, 2021 at 11:47 pm #1957886
Milner will be well into his 36th yr by the time the start of season comes along.
We really don’t want to see him fulfil our full back roles at that age.May 31, 2021 at 5:09 am #1959014
So we’re apparently not going to replace Wijnaldum this summer. The suggestion from one article (I forget with who sry) was that Konate was pretty much it. Is this the quiet before the transfer storm, or could this be true?
I mean, SURELY it can’t be that we learn a hard lesson about the defence, only to then commit the same mistake with midfield?
We can’t rely on the fitness/quality of Ox, Keita or Shaqiri. Milner is showing his age and although he’ll be able to do a job when called upon, I don’t think he could play week in and out, if we were to require that of him.
So, 4 “main” players for 3 places and I know some on here would question me putting Jones in the main group.
We should be looking at getting rid of the 3 unreliable and getting some dependable, quality players in there. If we swapped 3 for 2, with some investment of course, then fine but as things stand, I don’t like this.
I hope there is some truth to the other rumours about either Raphinha or that lad from Milan.May 31, 2021 at 11:56 pm #1959302
Defo needs to find that player that can play like Coutinho but with playing like Coutinho. I mean someone with amazing dribbling skills but can also hold themselves in a midfield. I would love Grealish but his fee would be astronomical, unfortunately, I expect he will be at City, not that they need any more ball dribbling midfielders.June 1, 2021 at 1:09 am #1959306
Agreed regards Grealish. He’s one of those players that it’s going to be upsetting to see him moving to one of our rivals. If we somehow signed him, I’d lose my shit. As you say though, he’ll go to one of the others, I mean City might not have a need for hima nd Chelsea definitely don’t but there’s always Utd. Fernandez plays higher up than him right? Utd still have Pogba then also. Damnit, Grealish -> Liverpool confirmed 😀June 1, 2021 at 2:45 am #1959309
Quite like the idea of Calhanoglu for free instead of paying over the odds for Grealish but reports coming out that he’s close to a move to Juventus. Really like Grealish but are FSG really going to stump up that kind of money?June 1, 2021 at 3:50 am #1959311
Who knows razor, maybe they’ll pull a Fabinho.
