Banjo, Wouldnt it be great to have four or five teams still in in with a few games to go? Thing is about your lot is they’re irresistible on their day and Ive said it on here, perhaps the strongest midfield in the prem at the minute.
I’d echo 1905, just inserting the caveat that Jose last season was a disaster for us, but i think he was after the United job and botched our season to stand a chance of getting the job.
Having said that, One of the big sides wont make the CL this season… I put money on it being City. I reckon with Mane back, Liverpool will be a different prospect entirely with too much going forward for other teams to deal with but who knows. Loving the unpredictability of this season once more.
January 26, 2017 at 1:42 pm #1423275RDP…. really don’t understand why Dembele doesn’t get more plaudits than he does. Amzing player, just love watching him!
January 26, 2017 at 1:58 pm #1423291Klopp currently has the 6th best squad in the PL. Liverpool spent no money in the summer. They haven’t solved the goalkeeper or defensive issues. Is that the owners fault or is Klopp failing? I am not sure.Klopp May need another summer window until he can be judged.
Conte’s situation is completely different. He took over a team already capable of being champions. If Conte had taken over Liverpool he certainly would not be well clear at the top of the league.
January 26, 2017 at 2:43 pm #1423321When you look at the teams Liverpool have struggled against, the net spend argument becomes a bit of a redundant one. Ironically, Liverpool seem to have no problem when up against the teams who have spent more than them. The fact Liverpool were outplayed by Southampton over 2 legs is nothing to do with Liverpool’s spending. Liverpool have the 5th most expensive squad and 5th highest wage budget in the league. It’s not a miracle for them to slightly overperform and get in the top 4. A miracle is Leicester winning the PL.
I rate Klopp. I think he’s a very good manager. However, I don’t buy into the theory that he’d walk the league with one of the other big team’s squad. For me, he’s best suited as an underdog manager. There’s no evidence to suggest he’d do any better with a stronger squad. In fact, he’d then be facing even more games against so-called lesser sides where there is massive expectation to win. He’s always performed better, for me, when his team have been the underdog with something to prove. In Germany, Dortmund gradually got worse as the expectation grew. He lost that underdog edge and things all but collapsed in his final season.
Things change very quickly in football. 2 months ago threads like this were being put up about Klopp (below) The 2 extreme opinions within 2 months that he’s either going to dominate the PL for the next decade or he’s useless are both pretty ridiculous in my opinion. He still has it all to prove but only a fool would write him off already.
January 26, 2017 at 5:23 pm #1423410Chris, considering we have made the top 4 once in 8 seasons are up against top top managers and top teams like city, Utd, arsenal and Chelsea, it would be a massive achievement for us to come 4th. Saying that, if we fail to get top 4 now then it is a disaster considering the position we are in.
Liverpool are shopping at the 2nd tier. We can’t attract the players Utd, city etc can. I totally agree it’s ridiculous to write klopp off yet. I was one of the few who could not get why Jose was getting so much stick when he was only at Utd a wet day. Plenty to play for and rdp says, it’s an exciting chase for top 4.
Alfie makes a good point and I said it a while back. It’s not rocket science how to set up against us.we miss mane sure but we knew for months he was going. Southampton played us to a tee. It was so obvious how they would set but we had no ideas. They should have been out of sight by halftime.
RDP,klopp is making some strange decisions now. Moving lalanna from centre mid to play as one of the front 3 was a mistake. Can is do out of form that he shouldn’t be starting at all. I believe if we beat Chelsea then we can get over this slump but if we lose I can see us falling apart like we did after the Utd defeat in 2015 and in 2012 when we couldn’t win a game for weeks.
Chelsea will set up like they usually do. Back 3 will turn to back 5 without the ball and we will struggle to break them down. It’s so predictable how this game is going to unfold. They have the power and pace to cause us huge problems and they are so solid in midfield. We really need to score 1st to get Chelsea to really come at us.
January 26, 2017 at 6:12 pm #1423430Winning the league would be absolutely massive for Liverpool Sean. Personally, I just wouldn’t see top 4 as a massive achievement for your lot. I know what you’re saying in that they’ve been out of it for so long barring the odd time here and there, but as achievements go, it won’t go down as anything extraordinary. Leicester’s title win last season unfortunately means nobody will bat an eyelid if Liverpool secure top 4.
Liverpool’s spending is obviously not on a par with the Manchester clubs but it’s not a million miles behind Arsenal, for example. Arsenal’s squad cost 330mil to Liverpool’s 310mil. It’s not that huge a gap. Tottenham are much more restricted than Liverpool are when it comes to wages and purchasing power.
January 26, 2017 at 6:29 pm #1423436Ye but arsenal can attract better players Chris. It be massive for the club Chris. It is no were in comparison to what Leicester did. doesn’t come close it but after finishing 8th , it would be a huge step forward. Of course it’s nothing extraordinary but it be big. No one really gave us a chance if top 4 at the start of the season because we have done nothing for years. So in my eyes it be a massive achievement considering two really big clubs are going miss out
January 26, 2017 at 6:58 pm #1423449Fair enough Sean. Absolutely agree that it would be seen as progress if you could get top 4. It really is wide open. People seem to be writing City off but I fancy them to finish the season really strongly. I have a feeling we´ll just miss out on top 4. With relative resources in mind, that would be a huge underachievement by us, but the progress and the improved style of play mean I´ll give Jose a free pass this season. Next season is when he´ll really be judged. You get the odd exception (Ranieri at Leicester, Conte this season) where managers just hit the ground running but some, like Jose, Klopp and Pep will in my opinion all come good with enough time to change things.
January 26, 2017 at 7:29 pm #1423459It’s to tough to call Chris. Spurs and Chelsea have impressed me the most this season. I think Utd will get top 4. Good run of Games now will see them into the top 4.
Agree about city. No way would I write them off. It’s really to difficult to call.
January 26, 2017 at 7:32 pm #1423462Even though I think we’ll just miss top 4, I actually fancy us to win the Europa League, which is even better really than top 4. The end result is the same in terms of qualifying for the CL, but it’s a trophy which could really act as a springboard for us, as well as the league cup if we can get that too
January 26, 2017 at 7:50 pm #1423472Sean ,I believe Liverpool will get top four as long as they start to get the points against the teams they should steamroller. You have been brilliant against the top sides but for some crazy reason lose silly games ,if you can cut this out I reckon you’re a shoe in for the CL places.
January 26, 2017 at 8:05 pm #1423475European games are starting again soon which will take the pressure off Liverpool. They will soon start getting plenty of mid weeks off. The opposite is true for Spurs and Jose, Thursday night football is notorious for dropped points at the weekend. Will make it even more interesting.
January 26, 2017 at 8:13 pm #1423479Good to see you back Johnny
January 26, 2017 at 8:19 pm #1423481Cheers Shiney, good news about Millwall as well?
January 26, 2017 at 8:27 pm #1423489Brilliant news the little man doesn’t often win
January 26, 2017 at 9:50 pm #1423538I’m not sure shiney mate. We lose against Chelsea and we could just slip further
January 27, 2017 at 9:50 am #1423684I’m not sure that a Manger who won the Bundesliga in succesive seasons can be described as useless.
Klopp’s made a mistake or two sure enough but what Manager doesn’t.
It’s a combination of a loss of legs forget the stats the intensity has not been there, a loss of players to injury, a loss of form from key players and the loss of Mane together with some continuing defensive frailties.
Liverpool were brilliant to watch early season and seemed genuine title contenders so I’m not sure there is really too much wrong.
Chelsea up next in the PL and unfortunately Liverpool raise themselves up for the big games.
I would happily take a draw right now 🙂
January 27, 2017 at 2:18 pm #1423877i will take a pool win as long we win our game!
January 27, 2017 at 9:54 pm #1424039No chance that Chelsea will get anything less than three points next week. We need Mane back and Can out of our starting midfield three. He has so lost his way these last few games. Until we have the 11 we were starting with early season we will not rediscover that form. Hopefully we will get it together in time to make top four. That has to be our goal.
January 29, 2017 at 12:26 am #1424859Not surprised by the recent dip in form. Klopp is a great motivator and manager, but Liverpool were always punching above their weight in terms of the quality and depth of their squad. Leicester were last year of course also, so you never know how it will turn out. If they can turn it around quickly and get their confidence back, they can still make the top four. Defeat to Chelsea, though, would be a serious blow that might end it for them. The competition is just too good.
