I think it’s time for a new thread re the above.
The Winter window is still a question mark and dependent on a successful appeal to CAS and even if successful it’s a tough window to trade in and get the players you really want.
Immaterial as to whether we do or don’t get the ban lifted we could still do a Pulisic and set up deals for completion in the Summer.
I know there’s a level of sensitivity about signing players and blocking the path of our young players but firstly Frank seems commited to want to trade in the transfer Market and Fergie was smart enough to add both Keane and Cantona to his Class of 92 and they don’t come much better than that group of youngsters.
Before discussing where we might need strengthening I think we need to asses where gaps in the squad might exist due to age, lack of opportunity, contracts running and certain players wanting to move on.
The obvious ones that fit the above categories are Giroud, possibly Michy, Pedro and possibly Willian as well as maybe Alonso?
Which suggests although not necessarily in January that we may well need to sign a striker or two a wide player or two and possibly a left back. I would also add to those a personal view that a creative midfield player to unpick stubborn defences might add to our weaponry.
Obviously everyone will have different opinions and I agree signings need to be carefully considered in order not to undo what we’ve already got going for us with the young players we have in the squad already out on loan and coming through too.November 13, 2019 at 2:19 pm #1799671
I agree 999. We need another creative midfielder. I may have posted this a while ago, we haven’t really replaced Cesc. Mount is more like a Lampard, not creative as such, but more renown for goal scoring and getting in the box at the perfect time.
Sometimes in games we don’t need both Kante and Jorginho and will be good to replace them with someone with an eye for a defence splitting pass.
I think Alonso is on his way out, Chilwell is who we are being linked with but Leicester are playing so well, would he want to come and if so, how much would we need to fork out?November 13, 2019 at 2:46 pm #1799675
Regarding midfield creative player i rather wait until RLC is back from injury and see how we use him in this team before making up my mind. I rather we bring in Gallagher to replace Barkley than sign a midfield creative player.
Lampard undropables are Mount/Kante/Jorginho. Kovacic is coming into that bracket and he brings a different skill set to the others RLC is a bit close with ball progression through the midfield + Goals. Billy is understudy for Jorginho and Lamps rates him. Gallagher is a bit of Mount ( Tenacious, works hard at both ends of the field and score goals)
Where we need players are LB and RW/RF. LB because Emerson seems to be injury prone/ Alonso isn’t the answer/ Maatsen is still quite young.
RW/RF because only Willian can comfortably play that position. CHO game suffers whenever he was ask to cover there and Pulisic also had the same problem. Though RLC had a blinder in that position under Sarri in 2 games especially against Derby but i don’t see him as along term solution.
A left footed forward is needed i would go for someone like Chukwueze from Villareal young same age as the rest of our team and very left footed.
Last a forward to actually challenge Tammy, i would go for Osimhen from Lille reminds me a lot Rashford, very quick and scores goals. The same age like Tammy similar game but quicker.November 13, 2019 at 3:13 pm #1799683
Yeah i think out of all positions, LB is the first place id look to improve on. Then look for a striker. Other than injuries and rotation, it is going to be hard for RLC to break into our midfield. What a great problem to have. Our squad as it is, is so strong its actually unbelievable.November 15, 2019 at 7:53 am #1799994
think maybe at most we do need 1 or 2 real quality players especially for those big games, we haven’t beaten any so the so called big clubs yet and the next one away to City also looks very daunting particularly as City are hurting right now.November 15, 2019 at 9:16 am #1800018
Spot on notnice. We need 2 world class players that will stand up and be counted and where young players can lean to in big games.
I still think we can improve on Zouma. Mourinho hit the nail on the head, against the big teams, we have struggled defensively. conceded 4 away to Utd, 1 sloppy goal v Liverpool (Firmino’s header). 4 against Ajax which is the more alarming one.November 16, 2019 at 8:18 am #1800119
“Connor Gallagher pinged in a superb goal just before half time for the England U21’s v Albania last night, having already earned a penalty with a vicious shot that hit the hand of an Albanian defender.
He just can’t be stopped this season! His superb Charlton form is carrying over to England, and at this rate he will be a Premier League player next season without doubt.
He’s in this team with some of England’s brightest talents, including Reece James and Phil Foden, and Gallagher is looking every bit their equal right now.”November 16, 2019 at 8:24 am #1800124
I can’t see what players of any value to the team that would come in January, Even if Giroud or an other leaves we can stick with Bat’s and Tammy upfront or if injury necessitates a false striker like Pedro.November 17, 2019 at 7:32 am #1800195
Agree Blaze assuming the ban is lifted if whoever is on Frank’s wish list to bring in if they’re not available in January he should keep his powder dry until the Summer.
I also think we need a full squad if we’re going to push for a top 4 place so I would try anf hold on to everyone until the Summer.November 17, 2019 at 9:08 am #1800211
I can’t see Giroud staying unless his given or promised more game time which of course can never be guaranteed. Pedro as well, not easy managing any team. Seeing there’s so many changes in the game I would like to see more than 3 subs allowed in any given match.November 17, 2019 at 5:46 pm #1800288
As crazy transfer rumours go this one takes some beating.😊
“Chelsea are aware of the 200 million euros’ price tag that Paris Saint-Germain have set on Neymar, but are still optimistic of completing the signing by taking advantage of PSG and Barca’s poor relationships. As bait, the west Londoners will offer young prospect Callum Hudson-Odoi to the Ligue 1 champions so as to soften the loss of Neymar.”November 18, 2019 at 11:51 am #1800384
We definitely need to avoid spending in January if our ban is lifted, I definitely agree. The only purchase that I would be fine is Chilwell, but can’t see Leicester selling him midway through the season, especially given the season they are having.
I would keep all remaining players for the whole season, even if it means them going on a free in Summer. Then in summer we go big on 2 players and add another 2 squad players to replace Giroud and Pedro.November 19, 2019 at 6:11 pm #1800676
CAS hearing on the transfer ban tomorrow.
Be good to get the ban overturned but it won’t be the end of the world if it isn’t January is never an easy window to buy the players you want in and providing we are free to buy in the Summer window which we will be irrelevant of the outcome of tomorrow that will be the most important thing.November 22, 2019 at 11:03 pm #1801463

I don’t see any point adding central midfielder. Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante. Mount did not even start today. RLC will come back end of this year probably. Ross Barkley. Billy Gilmour is waiting too. Ethan Ampadu is on-loan. No idea why he is still there but it seems that van Ginkel is still with our club.
First priority is left back. Lampard does not seem to trust Alonso nor Emerson. Azpi can do the job for the rest of this season, but if we can get Ben Chilwell, it will kick it up a notch. The second priority for me is striker. Tammy is our best striker for sure, but I think Michy does not have what it takes for a club like Chelsea. He knows where the back of the net is but his overall game IMO is poor. Giroud will surely leave in January to keep his place in France national team for Euro. I would also start to prepare if Willian leaves. A winger to complement CHO and PulisicNovember 24, 2019 at 6:23 am #1801716
I changed my mind think we do need a couple of players if it’s possible, if Rudiger ain’t going to make it another centre half, a striker and keeper to compete with the present staff.November 24, 2019 at 7:42 am #1801723
They’ve got a lot of good experienced players and a lot of good young players coming through but to go up to the next level in terms of challenging for the league they need to get a few lads in.
“They have enough at the moment to be top four, but they’ll need to add to that.
“He knows they’re just a little bit short of trying to really compete for the league title, they’ll have to bring players in for that.” Roy KeaneNovember 24, 2019 at 12:49 pm #1801782
I think Keane is right my views are that I think Chelsea need a left back possibly a Centre back if Rudiger can’t get over all his injuries a creative midfield player to unlock stubborn defences a winger to replace Pedro/ Willian with one or both likely to move on in the Summer and a striker because Giroud will move on possibly in January and because sadly Michy isn’t a top 4 striker.
The above will probably need more than one window and certainly couldn’t be achieved in January even if the ban was lifted.
To return to the squad at various intervals between now and next season a fully match fit Hudson Odoi, Rudiger, Loftus Cheek and possibly Ethan Ampadu and Connor Gallagher?
Overall though Chelsea are going very much in the right direction and are probably ahead of where most Chelsea fans though they would be at this stage of the season.
Currently Chelsea look stronger and a more complete team than those beneath them chasing a top 4 place and whilst there’s still a long way to go finishing in the top 4 would be a major achievement given all the circumstancesNovember 24, 2019 at 7:55 pm #1801967
The most important thing with transfer is to buy the right player(s) to elevate the quality that we already have. I think we are still missing big game player(s) as we have 0 points against big teams.
I would be surprised if Giroud stays beyond January. Pedro must go too, he simply cannot compete against our young talents in Pulisic and CHO. Willian, I am torn whether to give him 2 more years or to let him go on free. One thing for sure he cannot depart in January, we still need him. But he was poor though against City. Not a big game player. Michy has to stay for now too, but agree that he is not a top 4 player. Rudiger is still young, I think he will be immense for us once he puts his injury behind.November 26, 2019 at 6:35 am #1802256
It’s pretty obvious where the areas are that need to be strengthened maybe not in this upcoming window transfer ban or not but definitely next season, I would say we looking at a tall centre half, not sure about fullbacks, a winger or a no. 10 to replace Pedro and Willian as they probably leaving, a striker and a top keeper to provide serious competition for Abraham and Kepa. Then we still have a few qualitity youngsters that must be integrated and given game time like Gallagher, Brown, Gilmour. etc
