I saw Eze play at Fulham and he looked useful and is certainly gettable. I do wonder though whether we need him as in midfield we have Jorgino, Kovacic, Kante, Mount, Loftus-cheek, Gilmour plus Gallagher and Ampadu to return from loan. Five of these are incredibly talented youngsters whose path I would not want to block. I have omitted Barclay from this list because I cannot see a future for him at Chelsea given this level of competition. If we sign a new midfielder, even one who may not expect automatic starts, this reduces the playing time available for the existing players.
I think our problems breaking down teams at home would be greatly helped by Hudson-Odoi finding his mojo.December 28, 2019 at 1:05 pm #1811301
We have to compare ourselves to our competitions
Man city- De bruyne,Rodri,Gundogan,Silva,Bernardo,Young English guy,
Now these are just midfielders not including wingers
We are ok as per central midfield where we are lacking is in goals from wingers and full backs.
I was watching Wolves yesterday and the way there wingers hug the touchline with midfielders flooding the box. Our midfielders dont do that they stay back quite a lot.
We can switch to liverpool way where the wingers flood the box while the full backs provide the width and their midfielders who are a bit similar to ours( not scoring enough) stays back to stop counter attacks. The problem is that our full backs are terrible on attacking phase only Alonso comes in helpful in that regards.
If am Lampard I will be looking for wingers, a striker (big and fast), fullbacks. That’s the only way we will break teams down.December 28, 2019 at 3:13 pm #1811333
Full backs I think Chilwell will be perfect for us. But whether the player wants to join us or whether Rddgers will sell him, that’s another problem. Reece James on the other side certainly has potentials. I do think we need a player like Richarlison. Quick, knows the back of the net, brave.December 28, 2019 at 4:08 pm #1811355
I dont want Chilwell. There are better options out there for lesser feesDecember 29, 2019 at 8:27 pm #1811718
I want Chilwell. Lampard replaced Emerson 30th min. It has to say something about our dire need in LB.December 31, 2019 at 9:45 am #1812027
Chelsea will offer academy products Reece James and Tammy Abraham new bumper contracts in the new year.
Abraham, who scored the winner against Arsenal on Sunday, has been prolific this season leading the line for Frank Lampard’s Blues.
James, 20, has played 17 games in all competitions and he is contracted to the club until 2022 but Chelsea want to pre-empt any problems by handing him a pay boost and extending his deal further still.
Abraham also has two-and-a-half years remaining but his value would have skyrocketed off the back of his 14 goals and five assists this season.”
Negotiations have seemingly as expected been coloured by the CHO contract offer but we need to get both signed up soonest together with Lamptey.December 31, 2019 at 1:44 pm #1812100
What I read is that contract talks with Abraham stalls as he wants the same salary as CHO. Hopefully this will be sorted out as we do need Abraham. He is our best striker since Diego Costa left the club. And he is still young, hopefully he will develop to be a consistent goalscorer for us like Hasselbaink, Drogba or Costa in the past.
Tomori will be the new Terry (hopefully), Mount will be the new Lampard and Abraham will be the new Drogba. We need CHO and Pulisic to be the new Hazard too but I think they are still very far.
On another subject, we seem to be linked heavily with Timo Werner of RB Leipzig. Not sure whether he is the right player for us though but his goalscoring record is amazing. And he can complement Abraham in case we need to play with 2 strikersJanuary 1, 2020 at 9:50 am #1812202
“Chelsea recorded a loss of nearly £100m for the year ending June 30 as the club released their latest financial results.
However, despite the figures, the Blues insisted they are still compliant with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.
Turnover grew marginally to £446.7.”
Not great news and will ultimately impact on transfer spending.January 1, 2020 at 5:15 pm #1812362
I think Buck explained it was due to our non-participation in the Champions League. Us with Sarri did spend a lot last season on Jorginho and especially on Kepa. We needed them though.January 3, 2020 at 8:31 pm #1813176
It seems that our priority is a striker. Giroud is not lacking suitors and neither is Michy. Both aren’t an adequate replacement or partner for Abraham. I think it’s only logical that they will leave and we will bring a replacement. However Werner just stated that he was not seeking to move now, only after Euro. And we had a refusal from Lyon for Dembele. So our search for a new striker won’t be easy. I am not convinced of Chalov of CSKA Moscow.January 4, 2020 at 8:32 am #1813230
Allegedly Frank is prepared to let Pedro, Giroud and Alonso leave in January providing we can find suitable replacements which if accurate probably makes bringing players in in the January window even trickier with the need to move players out to make way for any incomings.January 4, 2020 at 10:34 am #1813266
I quite like Alonso and his efforts offensively. Would be sad to see him go.January 4, 2020 at 2:00 pm #1813324
Alonso imo ie a good wing back 67 but he struggles in a back 4. As Jody said we will only buy if it improves the squad.January 4, 2020 at 9:31 pm #1813480
Agreed, Alonso adds another dimension in our attack in case we play 3-4-3. But if we can get a decent amount for him (40m), I think he is not irreplaceable. Still will be weird though we sell our best LB without getting any replacement in January. Pedro and Giroud, I think if we can get some money, just sell them before their contract expires.
The problem with January window is that it’s very difficult to get good players. I think we will struggle to get a new striker to complement Abraham.January 5, 2020 at 11:59 am #1813530
I’m assuming that the near 100 mil loss excludes the sale of Hazard, that Spanish flop of a centre forward and others. Which means coupled with CL football and our dormant summer 2019 transfer window, the next set of financials should see a large profit. As next summers spend find wont impact the financials.January 5, 2020 at 10:43 pm #1813731
Spot on Stuilse. Nor the compensation to Conte or the late cost of swapping out Courtois for Kepa. Lots of negatives came together all at the same time.
And whatever we spend on transfers are amortised over the period of the contract whilst sales in aren’t.January 6, 2020 at 1:54 pm #1813898
Lampard is said to be willing to offload up to 6 players in this window, the likes of Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri, Ross Barkley, Pedro, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi. Not too sure how true the article is but it is players I feel we no longer need. Keep Alonso and 1 striker?January 6, 2020 at 2:58 pm #1813924
Agreed, keep Alonso and 1 striker! Alonso will be useful for 3-4-3, that’s a sure thing. And I think we cannot let both Giroud and Michy leave, nly 1 of them will leave if we get a replacement. So far it’s proven difficult in January. We seem to have an offer 34m rejected by Lyon for Dembélé. And Werner does not want to move before Euro.
We are linked with Gabriel Barbosa of Inter, to be honest I have big doubt on him. He was not successful with Inter, in Europe. He has only been successful in Brazil. And he is lightweight for a striker. Michy already is not big enough for a Premiership striker, let alone Barbosa.January 6, 2020 at 3:14 pm #1813934
Any idea when RLC returns. That will be like a new signing. It will take Ruben a while to gain match fitness and confidence but once that happens, he starts…no questions asked. I wonder who will lose out? Mount?
All this media nonense about shipping out 6 players and signing an entire new front three…utter nonsense. For me a LB and a striker will suffice…and maybe we can offload Giroud. Reckon everyone else stays. Frank can undertake serious recruitment in the summer…depending on how our season pans out.
Expectations for me havent changed much. Top 4 would be brilliant…to me that would be an over achievement, with a run to the CL quarters as well as a trip to Wembley for the FA Cup.January 6, 2020 at 6:22 pm #1813958
I think those who will probably leave: one of Giroud or Michy, Pedro, one of Emerson or Alonso. And probably Drinkwater who came back to the club after his loan. That’s all. And I reckon we’ll try to bring one striker, whoever that is.
Top 4 will be an over achievement. Same as UCL quarter final, over achievement. I think we’ll lose against Bayern. I will be really happy if we finish in the top 4, it’s a big ask for this young manager and this young squad.
