Was just thinking whilst posting my thoughts on the general pages in how I come about to be a supporter.

If you could stretch back as far as you can remember and your existence, what would be your ideal Liverpool 11?

Any given era is welcome and you can pick up to 5 subs if you are in 2 minds over someone in a particular playing position.

    1 Bruce Grobbelaar

    2 Rob Jones

    3 Alan Hansen

    4 Sami Hyppia

    5 Steve McMahon

    6 Jan Molby

    7 Steven Gerrard

    8 Peter Beardsley

    9 Ian Rush

    10 John Barnes

    11 Luis Suarez

    3-5-2 formation

    Subs:

    1 Jerzy Dudek
    2 Robbie Fowler
    3 Steve McManaman
    4 Sadio Mane
    5 John Arne Risse

That’s a bit subjective, a lot depends on your age I for instance would include Kenny Dalglish as my all time favourite player but others would perhaps justifiably propose Stevie G, if Colin from Vancouver were still on the site (pity he’s not) he might say the same he’s a year (I think) older than me so goes back a tad further but from a nostalgic aspect Lawrence, Lawler, Byrne, Milne, Yeats, Stevenson, Callaghan, St John, Smith & Thompson with Strong as sub, they brought the initial glory. YNWA RIP the 96

SIE, yeah, I was struggling a little in putting it together as a team and just realised I forgot to include Dalglish.

I can remember as far back as the 80s being the start of my generation, but I know there are older and equally younger supporters on here.

I would love to see for instance somebody naming a team with some players named for example from the 60s and 70s era.

    Cheers

it isn’t just your age but also your own memory. Time corrupts. i think if we’re to pick out best 11 then we might need to sometimes say the year that we are adding them in from. I’ll attempt a best 11 but I know that it is likely something that would completely change another time.

I’d try to make up a best 11 but it’s not easy and Im also quite drunk.

With so many great players to choose from choosing just eleven and the subs is a difficult task but even so I’m surprised nobody has even mentioned Torres who was sensational for Liverpool before his injury.

Sober me would still struggle to make a best 11. I find it hard to put the old school lads (Rush, Barnes etc) into context with todays players because I was young when they played and didnt know anywhere near as much about the game then.

If i did make an 11 i think I’d have to stick to the last 2 or so decades. Even then it’s incredibly difficult.

I go along with Robs team except, Clemence in goal & Emlyn Hughes at left back.
& once again, I know I am hitting my head on a brick wall, I would have the great Billy Liddell as a sub, he could play anywhere, left, right, centre could shoot & head the ball.

As I imagine I’m a similar age to Rob, I can’t really disagree with his team, except like Liver lad, I’d have Clem in for Grob, and I don’t think I ever saw Sir Roger play, so either Torres or Beardsley would be on the bench. But I’d also want to squeeze Terry McDermott on to the bench somewhere. He was my favourite player in the late 70”s.

And managed of course by Sir Bob.

It’s funny though that the one player of that team who stands out as being good but not exceptional is Alan Kennedy. We’ve never had a truly top class left back in my 45 years of supporting Liverpool. How about moving Stevie Nicol over to left back, because that lad invented the word versatile, and sticking Rob Jones in at right back?

There’s a fair degree of concensus growing around Rob’s team but with some minor tweaks around numbers 1, 2 and 3. Definitely go for Clem over Brucie. Steve Nicol was Mr Vesatile, which is usually a title befitting for a bench player in an All Star XI. Bit torn between having Phil Neal or Rob Jones at RB. Phil had the medals and the longevity, but Rob Jones was probably the better player (just) – although playing in an inferior team and having his career cut short. Agree with Hightown that Barney gets in by default from us never really having a great player in this position.

Hightown… my hero was Sir Roger from the moment he made his debut, but I didn’t put him in the team, because of Rushie, not because Rush was better but the understanding Ian had with Kenny D & this was a joy to behold.

And thinking again I most probably would put Phil Neal in instead of Nichol, Phil was so consistent over many years.

It’s so hard to pick best team.

Loved Fernando, and completely forgot about him which shows it can be an oversight. Wanted Dalglish too, so against the selection I have, it’s not an easy cherry pick.

I’ll go with a semi modern XI since I anm only 7.

    Dudek (winning us CL)
    Riise (those free kicks)
    Hyypiä
    masch (copy pasting current position)
    Babbel

    Alonso
    Gerrard
    Mcmanaman

    Torres
    Suarez
    Fowler

We would win it for sure!

Just players from the last 20 years for me:

    Reina
    Babbel carragher hyypia riise
    Gerrard mascherano alonso
    Mcmanman suarez
    Torres

    Subs:
    Dudek
    Matip
    didi hamann
    Gary macallister
    Sadio mane
    Michael Owen
    Robbie fowler

Was tempted to put in momo sissoko to the bench, but put didi (I know momo couldn’t pass, but neither could masch! He could tackle though…)

    Liverlad,

We’re obviously of a similar age, I only saw Liddell a couple of times (though can claim too have gone to school with his twin sons and Bob Paisley’s sons) only reason I didn’t include him in my selection was mine was the team of 1965 except that Milne didn’t play in the cup final. Bruce, Hyypia & Henchoz, Barnes and Macca out wide. Gerrard and Alonso setting the pace, with Suarez, Fowler, Torres and Daglish upfront.

liverlad, yeh, I did toy with the idea of putting Phil Neal in there and if he’d played most of his career at left back I’d stick him in but he played mostly at right back and Stevie Nic was simply immense there so I’m holding firm on my selection!

    SIE.

Billy Liddell. I only saw him about a dozen times, went to his testimonial & also saw him at charity game at South Liverpools ground against a Feranc Puskas X1.
If Shanks could pick an all time X1 Billy would have been in it THis is what Shanks said about him. “He was fast, powerful, shot with either foot & his headers were like blasts from a gun. On top of that he was as hard as granite.” enough said!!

    Rob.
I can definitely see your point & can understand why you chose Nicol. & if we got a penalty?? (wink)

I’ll take a team of Carraghers… with Stevie and Suarez coming off the bench, incase we get stuck at 0-0
