Mikel Arteta wants Julian Alvarez at the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal are reportedly willing to push ahead with a swap proposal in order to seal a stunning swoop for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez before the summer transfer window shuts on September 1.

It’s no secret that the Gunners have been hunting a deal for the Argentina frontman over the course of the summer window, as Mikel Arteta looks to bring in an elite No.9 who he feels will take his side to the next level.

Despite Viktor Gyokeres notching 21 goals in all competitions last season, there is still a feeling that an Arsenal upgrade is needed at the striker position to go all the way in the Champions League, while the club also look to defend their Premier League crown.

While Alvarez is actively know to be pushing for a move to Barcelona, the Catalan giants may not have the funds available to ultimately pursue a deal, given their ongoing financial constraints.

That opens the door for a Gunners swoop for the former Manchester City star, with transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano recently revealing that talks over a potential deal have taken place in London.

Indeed, TEAMtalk have consistently reported that Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta remains in contact with his former colleagues at Atleti as he watches Alvarez’s situation closely.

And it appears things may have ramped up a level on that front, with a report from Spanish outlet Diario Sport claiming that the north London outfit have put a swap proposal on the table involving Gyokeres in their efforts to snap up Alvarez.

According to the report, Arsenal are willing to part ways with the Sweden international just one season after he joined from Sporting in a deal worth £55million.

The 28-year-old never managed to nail down a consistent starting spot during the 2025/26 campaign, with Kai Havertz often preferred up front – as he was in the season opener against Gyokeres’ former club Coventry City.

The report suggests that Arsenal are willing to offer a £68.5million plus Gyokeres to secure Alvarez, with the ‘player’s head said to have turned towards Emirates Stadium’, given Atletico’s reluctance to sell Barcelona, even if that could find the funds.

Financial details would not be a problem for either party, with Alvarez expected to double his wages if a deal is agreed.

Neville tips huge Alvarez impact at Arsenal

Following Arsenal’s convincing 3-0 win over the Sky Blues on Friday night, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville commented on the impact Alvarez could have on an already thriving team.

He said: “We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players.

“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.

“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.

“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”

Arsenal are back in action on August 31 when they head to new signing Ezri Konsa’s old club Aston Villa in the Premier League.
