Real reason Liverpool chose Minteh over Mbaye revealed as Romano confirms deal

Liverpool have been linked with Yankuba Minteh and Ibrahim Mbaye

Why Liverpool are now going all out to sign Yankuba Minteh instead of Ibrahim Mbaye despite agreeing personal terms with the latter has been revealed.

Liverpool banked Victor Munoz earlier in the summer, though over the remaining days of the transfer window, aim to sign two more wide attackers.

PSG’s Bradley Barcola is the undisputed top target. Personal terms with the French ace are in place, and Liverpool are in daily contact with PSG regarding the transfer fee and deal structure.

However, today’s update regards the second player Liverpool hope will follow Barcola into Anfield.

For much of August, it had appeared that player would be Mbaye. Indeed, the Reds agreed personal terms with the Senegal international who wants out of Paris.

And with PSG signing three new forwards in Ferran Torres, Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche, they are open to offloading both Mbaye and Barcola.

But according to the latest from trusted French reporter, Fabrice Hawkins, Liverpool have been put off by PSG’s new asking price for Mbaye.

€70m valuation turns Liverpool off Ibrahim Mbaye

Reporting on X, he revealed the back-to-back Champions League winners are demanding an eye-watering €70m / £60m for the 18-year-old.

‘PSG want €70m for Ibrahim Mbaye this summer,’ wrote Hawkins.

‘Even if this figure is just a starting point for negotiations, the asking price is putting off interested clubs, who value the Senegalese at around €50m.

‘Liverpool, who have already reached an agreement with the player over the terms of a potential future contract, do not want to go that high.

‘Like Bradley Barcola, Ibrahim Mbaye will not be involved in PSG’s matches during this transfer window.’

PSG’s €70m / £60m asking price is the exact amount Liverpool offered for Brighton’s Minteh with their second attempt.

The bid was rebuffed by the Seagulls, though sources are suggesting a third bid in the £65m-£70m range would get the green light from Brighton.

And with Fabrizio Romano now confirming Liverpool have agreed personal terms with the Gambian, it’s Minteh and Barcola who Liverpool now plan to sign, with Mbaye stuck in limbo.

Liverpool agree deal with Yankuba Minteh

Taking to X on Friday night, Romano wrote: ‘Liverpool submit £60m proposal for Yankuba Minteh after personal terms agreed with Gambian winger.

‘Negotiations underway with Brighton as #LFC are optimistic to sign Minteh.

‘Not an alternative but in addition to Bradley Barcola, who remains the top target.’

If Liverpool do succeed in signing 22-year-old Minteh, he won’t be available to make his debut for the Reds until October or potentially even as late as November. The winger is currently recovering from surgery to repair an unspecified right leg injury sustained in pre-season.

Regarding who would play where, Liverpool’s aim is to line Barcola up on the left side with Munoz providing back-up, and have Minteh and Rio Ngumoha compete for starts on the right.

Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa could both depart, with Tottenham already agreeing personal terms with Gakpo.
