‘Rejuvenated Sturridge’ means Liverpool ‘can challenge on all fronts’

Liverpool fans discuss expectations for Daniel Sturridge, Manchester United supporters look at Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Anthony Martial, and Chelsea readers talk about transfers and pre-season games – all in Your Says of the Day.

Will Sturridge prove to be like a new Liverpool signing?

Sturridge is gonna have a big season.

redsforever

He’s definitely looking sharp but as we all know it’s all about his availability.
Read an interview with him recently there and he was basically saying his time at West Brom give him a bit of perspective of what things are like at other clubs. I think he realises how good it is at Liverpool at the min and wants to be part of it.

gingerlfc

So what he really is saying then ginger is he thought he was too good for Liverpool at some point, which the way he had behaved sometimes in the warm ups (very unprofessionally)….id agree.
But, hopefully he can stick around and help the team in getting closer to a title or a cup

Moonster

Sturridge will not stay fit. We have the same conversations every season chums. Be great to be proved wrong but he’s 28 now and just cannot stay fit

Sean the sailor

No Moonster!
That’s not how I read what he said at all.
That’s not I described it either.

He realises how different it’s at other clubs, how positive things are at Liverpool and how he realises how lucky he is to be part of it and not fighting relegation i.e. Like at West Brom.

Sean, no ones claiming he’s gonna stay fit. In fact I’d say to a man everyone has said he won’t stay fit but he is looking sharp. The thing is we are no longer in a position where we have to rely on him for our goals but with the sharpness he’s showing he’s a nice string to the bow.

gingerlfc

I agree Sean, he ain’t going to last.
Ginger that’s the way he’s been since Luis left, he thought he was really something but he was only second fiddle to Luis…and it showed once Luis left. He’s been on a strop ever since and his attitude has shown that on a few occasions….but everyone has their view on this.

Moonster

redsforever If he is fit he can have a fantastic season but the last 4 years was full of injuries…

Daniel Sturridge

pinezes69

Sturridge has 63 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool. Approx a 1 in 2 kinda striker.
During Suárez years at Liverpool he spent approx a seasons worth of games suspended. Guess who was scoring for Liverpool during that time??

I guess if you hold a gripe against Sturridge you’ll always find the negative in the situation.

gingerlfc

Ye ginger, he looks a bit hungrier all right. He looks very sharp. Be great if Sturridge could just stay fit as he is a fantastic player.

I just won’t get my hopes up about him but klopp seems quite happy with him and it looks he has a role to play if he stays fit

Sean the sailor

Sturridge is an enigma. After Luis left injuries robbed us of him, but if you think about this it may have been a blessing because it forced the club to bring in more attacking options. A rejuvenated Studge gives us the chance to realistically challenge in all competitions this season. He would also have the incentive of playing for a new contract too, or a free move elsewhere. If injuries permit, I expect to see a vintage season from him. Ynwa

Sanj1

The fact is that Sturridge has been no use to us in the past couple of seasons so to get your hopes up based on a pre-season where he has played really well is probably not realistic.

Everyone knows he has the talent and it would be awesome to have him as an option but it’s probably not going to happen. We’ll see how he goes as the season gathers momentum. Maybe he’s done a lot of work on strength and conditioning, diet etc to help him but my fear is that he’ll just get injured again and it’ll be the same old story.

bofa

There are those that think Sturridge has an attitude prob and that that don’t. Nothing wrong with that …, I’ve never seen evidence of it personally and he’s never really moaned with us or anything, every players comments can be interpreted in any given way including our star players at the mo.

The issues really arise when people start questioning what he’s contributed WHEN HES STARTED eg it wasn’t all about Luis when they partnered as Gingers rightly pointed out they both did and Sturridge carried us when Luis was banned. He was unbelievably good that season.

HOWEVER the issue is that he’s injury prone (yes understatement) and that’s where I don’t have a problem with people questioning him now.

Looks like Klopp wants to keep him and play him, the question is how many games can he stay fit for ….

Bob-Notts

This is sturridges comeback season. He’ll score 18 goals minimum.

Chelsea Summer Transfer Window 2018

The STRIKER situation appears dire. Higuain now unlikely and I’ve read that Edinson Cavani is on the radar if available. We are a fortnight away from the start of the new season and there is no striker in sight and we don’t know where we stand with Hazard, Courtois and Willian whilst even Kante is up in the air. I reckon that if all this were true this club would be in deep trouble.

I am willing to believe that the majority of what we read sells newspapers and that only Courtois is on the outer, Sarri likes the idea of working with the aforementioned and the aforementioned are probably excited at the thought of playing Sarriball and cannot wait to get back into it and the experience of revisiting childhood and having FUN. Well the closer we get to kick off with very little happening, you can believe the newspapers are gospel and the Chelsea management have rocks in their heads. I am starting to actually believe that things will be fine by kick off, we will retain the spine and purchase a last minute striker that can score 20 -30 goals for us. Surely we cannot rely on Morata, Bats, Giroud and Abraham. Theres maybe 20 goals there in total amongst the lot of them and that, in all competitions Chelsea will compete in.

chelsea1967

We should have sold Courtois last Summer for big money when he wouldn’t sign a new contract and bought Pickford for £30m then from Sunderland. A proper DOF might have made that happen.

nine nine nine

It really bothers me if Courtois and Willian leave without securing proper replacement before. We’re gonna be ‘squeezed’ by other clubs when we want to buy as they see our urgent needs. For me, the players who can leave without replacements: Morata (we already have Tammy), Drinkwater and one of central defenders as we have a lot. Other players should not be allowed to leave for any price. Community shield is next week ! Time is really precious

aindro

Jordan Pickford TEAMtalk

I would rather go for Butland than Pickford as its going to be a battle to get Pickford plus you looking at a price difference of at least 60m quid if not more.

Blaze

“Real Madrid have ended their interest in Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard as Julen Lopetegui plans to shape his side around Isco. The La Liga giants have been heavily linked with a £170million move for the Belgian and Hazard intimated after the World Cup that he was ready to make the move to the Bernabeu. Chelsea have long been aware of Hazard’s desire to eventually move to Madrid but the Blues believe they are in a strong position given the 27-year-old has two years to run on his deal at Stamford Bridge. The Blues’ position has convinced Real that a deal for Hazard would prove too expensive and new boss Lopetegui is now ready to put his faith in Isco instead, according to AS.”

Good news for Chelsea if accurate.

nine nine nine

Sadly our incompetent board never learns from the Matic saga. Once again they seem to be undermining the new manager. Sarri said that he wants to keep Willian. Why not give him that chance instead of rushing to sell him to a rival? I wonder who is in charge of our transfers? After rejecting £65m against Barcelona. It is reported that we have accepted £66m against United? Does that make anysense? If this is true and United are insisting that they do not want to sell Martial to Chelsea who they see as a rival. Then it will not be surprising if i call our board incompetent board.

young_blue

Re the Courtois situation if Real meet Chelsea’s price for him which is probably circa £50m then he will go and who we get to replace him will assume massive importance I suspect we’ll have a better idea of how things are shaping up in this area next week once Courtois returns to Cobham if indeed he does return to Cobham.

Personally I would go for Pickford , Cillessen, Schmeichel and Butland in that order although I don’t think we will be able to get either Pickford or Schmeichel although we should still try.

Rumours of Reina to Chelsea continue to grow and whilst Reina wouldn’t be my choice he would probably be Sarri’s choice and I’m happy to accept that purely because I want to see Sarri having a significant say on key transfers.

nine nine nine

Have to say that this Rugani youngster looks a very very good prospect. Still very young for a CB, only 23 I think and a future Italian international CB mainstay for years to come. Real are apparently pretty interested as well. Tall, physically strong, good in the air, very comfortable on the ball and has great positional awareness. Really hope we land him.

Stuilse

Olivier Giroud Chelsea

“Real Madrid have made an £100million bid to sign Thibaut Courtois and Willian – and Chelsea are seriously considering cashing in on the duo, reports claim. The La Liga giants have been relentlessly pursuing Courtois this summer, with the Belgian goalkeeper keen to return to the Spanish capital and Chelsea resigned to losing him. Willian held talks with Real’s bitter rivals Barcelona, before opting to sign 21-year-old winger Malcom instead. The Brazilian is a wanted man after an impressive World Cup with Brazil, with Jose Mourinho keen for a reunion with the attacker at Manchester United, however, Madrid are intent on signing him.” ???

nine nine nine

Take the money and put into the kitty. We can easily replace Willian but Courtious will go for free end of this season. So it’s a great deal for us if true.

Blueowner

We are linked with Pulisic. We can replace Willian with Pulisic. The problem is replacing Courtois

aindro

They are trying to bring in Pickford or Butland both are going to be extremely difficult due mainly to the lack of time left. I think it has to be a British keeper in view of certain outs and in that happened or still shortly going to happen. 999 Im sure can put a some light on that subject?

Blueowner

Blueowner, our biggest problem is the limited amount of quality alternatives available to us and as you say we are running out of time.

There’s not a chance of getting Pickford imo though I would be delighted to be proved wrong and getting Schmeichel will be difficult too.

Butland to me looks the most achievable and he’s homegrown which is a bonus but I don’t think that should be the deciding factor.

Going to be an intersting 10/11 days. Cheers 999

Chelsea Pre-season 2018-19

Morata, Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Zappacosta all really poor against Inter today.

Basically sums up that last summers transfers dealings were some of the worst in the clubs history.

bort

…….yet we still won. Our 2nd pre season game as opposed to Inters 6th. Thought Morata was a lot better as opposed to his dismal performance against Perth Glory. Agreed that Bakayoko was very poor. What’s happened to him??

Stuilse

Credit where its due, I thought Morata looked much better against Inter. Bakayoko was pants again though, he simply has no future at Chelsea, surely.

Hudson Odoi was class again, he really needs to play a significant role in the first team this season. If Willian is off to pastures new, I think we already have his replacement right there.

Jorginho also was brilliant, once again. I can see why he is so pivotal to the way Sarri wants the team to play.

Should Henderson remain Liverpool captain?

I can understand people saying Henderson isn’t the best midfielder we have, and even wanting VVD as captain. But Henderson is a model pro, Very rarely puts a foot wrong on the pitch, and leads by example. He’s like a combo of Carra and Gerrard. Nowhere near as talented as Gerrard, and not as v9cal as Carra. But for sure somewhere in between on both counts. I honestly feel like we have bigger problems than taking the captaincy away from the lad. I don’t subscribe to the belief that your captain should be your best player either, but with the added competition if Henderson does find himself down the pecking order. It’s something Klopp will need to review then. But as it stands atm it would be a d*ck move to take the armband from him.

D1rtyH4rry

Klopp obviously keeps Hendo captain for a reason. I’m only speculating, as we all are, but I think it might be because he’s good in the dressing room & the lads might respect him. I certainly don’t think he has the attributes on the pitch. I’ve seen him yelling instructions on the pitch etc & quite often plays good against lower rated opposition but I can’t remember him grabbing a game by the scruff & leading the team to victory. I have seen him shirk out of tackles & pretty much vanish against the top teams though.
Regardless, Klopp obviously likes him so I expect we will see a fair bit of him again this season.

Number8wasgr8

If you want to win the league you dont get an average player to be your captain. I dont care how ‘vocal’ he is, hendo is at best, a good squad player. I can see this to be hendo’s last season as captain.

redsforever

Henderson is important as other semi average players English players Nicky Butt, Carrick were to Manchester United. You don’t build a team around Henderson, but conversely maybe without him you dont win a league title either. That’s the biggest compliment Henderson will ever get from me.

Players leaving Liverpool this summer

Moreno Matip and Lallana must leave. Enough!!

Keeping Sturridge is great risk.

Solanke and Ojo must leave on loan and Woodburn must have more chances from Klopp.

pinezes69

Sturridge I would keep. Matip sold if Vida is coming in. Lallana sold if we sign Fekir. Fringe players I expect will be onloan or sold & bring in a fair amount to cover the cost of those brought in this window.

Sanj1

Matips injured again. Got sent home from tour earlier

gingerlfc

Ginger, Matip has had consistent muscle injuries now for a good three years and is never available for long run of games. Damn concerning that is.

Rob Fort Worth TX

Can’t say I’m a big fan of his either.
For such a big man he’s very meek.
Our worst centreback last season by a distance.

gingerlfc

Thats why i hope we buy another top CB to partner vvd. Matip is now like the CB version of sturridge. Lovren for the most part look good. But is always prone to the occasional errors. You get 2 good games from him and then he makes a mistake in the nxt game.

redsforever

Can’t see us buying another central defender. Klopp has basically said its not happening. Plus we already got VVD, Lovren, Matip, Klavan and Gomez plus that youngster that played against the Manc teams there.

gingerlfc

I’d much rather try get money for Origi then send him on loan. Word is watfotd on loan

Markovic olympiakios on loan aswell

Sean the sailor

What’s the point of another loan for Markovic? He’s never going to be a part of the first team so let him go. Poor sod!

Liverpool Pre Season Games

Shaqiri really impressed, what a goal, he looks ready to prove his doubters wrong! He might be short but the lad is built like a bull, I can see him providing competition with Bobby if he continues like that.

NotoriousBingo

Shaqiri, Sturridge, Mané and Salah all impressed.
Lallana and Solanke again disappointing.

gingerlfc

What I like from preseason games is getting a look at the fringe and youth players. I’m guilty of not knowing much about most of them, Philips the big tall centre half, looked quite promising and so was Camacho, could do with some of these lads breaking through. I would rather see these guys filling the squad than Klavan and Clyne

Big_Balls

Gotta agree with Philips and Camacho. Definitely giving Klopp food for thought.
Philips has now kept clean sheets against the teams that finished top 2 in the league.
I have no problems whatsoever with Klavan and Clyne being involved. Both have proved they can very much play their part when called upon in proper competitive games.

gingerlfc

Liverpool

I know we shouldn’t read too much into pre-season games but it’s always nice to give the Mancs a spanking regardless of the quality on the pitch. Result and individual performances aside, I was very impressed by the intensity shown throughout in very hot conditions (easier to achieve with wholesale changes, I know, but fitness levels were very good. 5 changes at half time, another 6 around 64 minutes. Interestingly, the Mancs made only one change at h-t – the keeper – and didn’t make any more until the 70th onwards).

Interesting that with the absence on TAA and Clyne, Klopp chose to play Comacho and Curtis Jones at right back. Neither were troubled.

SirRoger

Most impressive thing is how fit we look already. Mane and Salah look really sharp

Just don’t see how Solanke is going to be a good option as a back

I think Henderson is due back 5th August but is already at Melwood doing his own program

It’s usually 3 weeks from when they finished up

I highly doubt him or lovren will be involved v West ham but you never know

Sean the sailor

The huge difference between the two sides was the movement and slick passing. Our players were technically miles ahead of the United players. There was only one side playing football. United were extremely slow offloading the ball and just didn’t know what to do with it.

Shaqiri’s movement was brilliant. I thought he would be a decent addition but I may have underestimated him!

Pre-season has been very encouraging, even against Dortmund (just not the final score). I think one or two players may break through as well this season which we may just need.

The Mourinho Effect

Well the season has barely even started, yet the dreaded “JOSE 3rd SEASON SYNDROME” has struck.

This Martial saga is truly hocking man management from him. It has exposed his 1 dimensional man management skills. Taking on the TOUGH LOVE approach on everyone will never EVER work. I was truly looking forward to seeing him prove all his critics wrong but this leopard will never change. Martial has the ability to be a top player and I bet if he was working under Fergie/Pep/Simeone he would have been even better. And the irony of this whole Jose issue I have is that he seems to pick on our most talented players. Pogba has just won a world cup yet he hasnt espcaped this man’s wrath. He openly showed his compassion to the donkey that is Fellaine and publicly begged him to stay, yet can easily discard our talented players. The mere fact that he wants to sign Ante Rebic when he has Martial is diabolical at best. Being upset that the boy wanted to be present for the birth of his child is absolutely pathetic

The scousers have improved, city are already top, arsenal will be better while were self destructing.

O.T Fax Machine

We need to keep martial and develop him like fergie did with nani, anderson, fabio, Rafael, cleverley, smalling and jones. This bulls**t needs to stop, for last two season our creativity has been relied on martial rashford and lingard, let me tell you all 3 are not good enough for us. If we get Willian then the front 3 of lukaku Willian and sanchez with Fred matic and pogba behind is a lot more exciting than any of them 3 in the side.

As for lingard and developing late like Scholes? Difference is scholes became a top class player and lingard has gone from being pretty sh*t to average at age of 25.

Yerry mina, Willian and a left back would suit me for the start if season. Only departure likely now are darmian, martial and rojo
