Manchester United will be getting rid of Alex Telles this summer after his loan spell at Sevilla, but the defender has been left in limbo after another potential buyer’s interest was discredited.
Telles joined Man Utd from Porto in October 2020 to put pressure on Luke Shaw at left-back. However, Shaw responded well and nailed down the starting role. It meant the impact Telles made became minimal.
Only nine Premier League appearances came in Telles’ debut season at Man Utd, before 21 in the second. He never scored in the league for the club before being shipped off to Sevilla on a temporary basis for the 2022-23 season.
Telles played 38 times in all competitions for Sevilla, including 27 La Liga appearances. The Europa League winners have no intention of buying him permanently, not that they had any automatic option to anyway.
Therefore, Man Utd must now work out what to do with an unwanted player who only has one year remaining on his contract.
Recently, it was claimed in Telles’ native Brazil that he could join Benfica. The move would allow him to return to the Portuguese top flight, where he used to play for Porto.
Benfica need a new left-back after Alex Grimaldo reached the end of his contract and signed for Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer.
Alex Telles not going to Benfica
However, according to Record, that replacement will not be Telles after all. The Portuguese source has categorically dismissed the chances of Benfica buying the Man Utd flop.
Although admitting Man Utd will be getting rid of the 30-year-old this summer, it is emphasised that his destination will not be Benfica.
Where else he could go remains to be seen. There was recently speculation about a return to Porto, which would be less controversial than the imagined move to their O Classico rivals.
Telles previously played 195 times for Porto, scoring 26 goals and making an astonishing 57 assists. In contrast, from 50 Man Utd appearances across all competitions, he only ever got one goal and eight assists.
As well as Shaw, who has also established himself in a more central role when required, Telles would have Tyrell Malacia ahead of him in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
There has also been speculation that Man Utd might invest in another full-back to account for Shaw’s slight adjustment in role.
Even if not, the door seems to be locked shut to prevent Telles from having a second chance back in Manchester.
