Aston Villa will terminate the contract of a player signed by Steven Gerrard and a LaLiga side have already reached an agreement to bring him on board straight away, per a trusted source.

It’s fair to say the crop of players signed by Steven Gerrard last summer have proved to be something of a mixed bag.

Boubacar Kamara, for example, has been excellent in midfield and his free agent acquisition already has the hallmarks of a transfer masterstroke.

On the other hand, Philippe Coutinho has provided zero goals or assists across 19 matches this season. The Brazilian playmaker already has some way to go if he’s to prove his £17m transfer wasn’t a total bust.

Elsewhere, Villa conspicuously signed Sweden international Ludwig Augustinsson to provide back-up to Lucas Digne at left-back.

The 28-year-old arrived on a season-long loan from Sevilla and has featured just five times for the club.

He’s spent a sizeable chunk of his time in the Midlands sidelined through a hamstring injury. However, even when fit he’s generally been rooted to the bench.

The January window always promised to be an intriguing one once Unai Emery succeeded Gerrard at the helm.

The Spaniard wasted little time signing a new left-back in Alex Moreno. He, combined with Digne, has ensured Augustinsson no longer has a place in the Villa squad.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed Aston Villa are poised to terminate Augustinsson’s loan switch.

The Swede won’t be returned to Sevilla, however, with the transfer guru adding an agreement to see out the season on loan at Mallorca has already been struck.

In Romano’s words, it’s “agreement reached and set to be done” with the 10th-placed LaLiga side.
