Man Utd open contract talks with starlet over fears Barcelona could swoop

Manchester United have opened contract talks with midfielder Angel Gomes over fears he could be snapped up by Barcelona, according to a report.

Gomes made his first start in the senior United team in Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League win over Astana, in which fellow youngster Mason Greenwood was the match-winner with a goal in the second half.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Gomes – whose current United deal expires next summer – has entered into discussions with the club over a new deal, but neither side are close to making a breakthrough.

The newspaper says that Barcelona are interested in the 19-year-old, and with him being in the final year of his contract, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side allegedly want to tie him down to avoid the possibility of the Spanish giants making a move.

United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham.
