Dan James transfer latest: Problem emerges with Tottenham offer as new Premier League side vow to match Leeds asking price

Leeds United and Tottenham appear unlikely to reach an agreement over the Dan James transfer – but a new Premier League suitor have burst on to the scene and are willing to meet the Whites’ £20m asking price.
James signed for Leeds last summer, joining on a £25m move from Manchester United and penning a deal to 2026. He was a regular in their side last season, playing 32 times in the Premier League. However, with injuries robbing Leeds of Patrick Bamford for much of the campaign, James was regularly utilised in an unfamilar central striker’s role.
The Wales winger remains a big part of Jesse Marsch’s first-team plans this season, featuring in all four games he has been available for this season. That includes two starts and two appearances off the bench.
However, James could be sacrificed by Leeds as they look to finish off the transfer window with at least one more signing. The Whites have already made eight new additions this summer, but now want a new striker to boost their options.
Top scorer Rodrigo sustained a dislocated shoulder injury on Tuesday evening, leaving Leeds with a hole in their attack.
To that end Marsch is keen on a deal for Wolves striker Hwang Hee-chan. That said it seems Wolves are unlikely to sanction his sale, with the club adamant the South Korean will stay put.
Leeds, though, are still hoping to land a new attacker and are reportedly turning their attention instead to Cody Gakpo. The PSV winger would cost considerably more than Hwang, with a fee of £38.5m on his head.
But in order to facilitate a deal, Leeds will look instead to cash in on James.
Leeds price tag puts Tottenham off Dan James bid
To that end, Leeds are reportedly informing his suitors that any deal for James will cost £20m.
And while talks have been held over a potential switch to Spurs, Antonio Conte and Co are only looking to sign James on an initial loan.
They want to take the former Swansea winger on an initial loan deal with the option of a deal at the end of the season. Spurs have interest in their winger, Bryan Gil, from Valencia. But Conte insists he will only allow him to leave if Tottenham can bring in a replacement.
As a result, talks between the two clubs have seemingly broken down with Leeds unwilling to entertain a loan arrangement.
Whites boss Marsch has spoken openly about James’ future and appears reluctant to let him leave. However, he was hardly convincing when questioned over the winger following Tuesday’s draw with Everton.
“I like Dan. He’s a big part of what we’re doing here, both before and since I came here,” Marsch said. “I do not anticipate big movements within the group, but we’ll have to see what happens.”
Fulham ready to match Leeds asking price
With Tottenham stalling on a deal, the door has reportedly opened for Fulham to snatch the winger’s signature.
ESPN’s James Olley claims the Cottagers are ready to match Leeds’ asking price and are hopeful of bringing him to Craven Cottage.
Marco Silva’s side have made an excellent start to life back in the Premier League and currently sit sixth ahead of the remaining midweek games.
The Cottagers are keen on adding another winger to their mix and had agreed a deal with Roma to sign Justin Kluivert.
However, their agreement to sign the Netherlands winger has been dismissed by the authorities. That’s after their application for a work permit for Kluivert was dismissed on the grounds of him not fulfilling their criteria.
Kluivert spent time on loan with Nice last season but they passed up their option to make his move permanent.
A switch to west London had been agreed only for Fulham to see the move blocked. But rather than rue their luck, the Cottagers are looking instead to snare James to the club instead.
Everton were also reportedly considering a move for James, but their interest is reported to have turned to Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze instead.
Leeds, though, will have to act fast if they are to land Gakpo. Southampton are also hot on his trail and have reportedly struck a fee with PSV.
