Postecoglou drops sarcastic update on Nottingham Forest sack claims as video footage shows Aussie’s isolation

Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou is dealing with questions over his future

Under-fire Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou has conceded he will hold talks with the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, over their poor run of form since taking over and has sarcastically hit back at claims that he could be facing the sack over their dismal run of form that has yielded a dismal 0% win record thus far.

The Aussie was drafted in as a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo on September 9, with the Portuguese boss becoming the first managerial casualty of the season in the Premier League after several differences with the colourful Nottingham Forest owner. But despite steering former club, Tottenham Hotspur, to European success last season, there were plenty who questioned if Postecoglou was the best fit for the Tricky Trees, who had flourished under his predecessor’s more pragmatic approach.

Now, a matter of a month into his reign, and with a record that shows two draws and five losses from seven played – a 0% win record – claims that Postecoglou could be sacked are generating serious noise within the media.

And after Sunday’s latest setback – a 2-0 loss to Newcastle at St James’ Park – the 60-year-old has offered a flippant response to claims he faces the sack.

“Yes, it’s a lost cause,” he replied, sarcastically. “I see it as an exciting opportunity. You have to be up for the fight and the struggle.

“I’d be silly to be sitting here at the age of 60 if I lacked self-belief or fight. Even in the schoolyard, I picked fights with people that beat me up.”

Sticking to the theme, Postecoglou added: “I get that it’s part of the fanfare of the Premier League that it needs one manager to be in the spotlight. If people want to assess me three and a half weeks into the job, there’s nothing I can say or do that will change that.

“But what I have seen and felt in this period is that we are heading in the direction I want us to. The results will come. In the meantime, it is a struggle and a fight, and there is nothing wrong with that.

“We don’t have things handed to us on a plate in life, we have to fight. I have fought for things all my life. Why does everyone want everything neatly packaged? The attitude today seems to be that as soon as something goes wrong, you change it.”

However, as much as Postecoglou digs his heels in, footage having emerged of the Aussie as he left the field at St James’ Park illustrates a manager very much struggling to win over his players and facing a big challenge to turn things around…

Postecoglou has his eyes wide open as alarming video emerges

Via journalist Craig Hope, Postecoglou cut an isolated figure as he trudged off the field at full-time, having not shared many greetings from his downbeat players and illustrating further the disconnect that currently exists in the club.

Despite that, Postecoglou insists he went into the Forest job with his eyes wide open at the challenge that lies ahead.

“I knew this was a big challenge,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. I don’t know why people think challenges are a burden, I love a challenge. The alternative is sitting at home watching games and I don’t want to do that. If you guys have a lot fun around it I don’t care. I couldn’t care less.”

And in a final act of hilarity, Postecoglou flipped the script on a journalist when he suggested that he might have been “a lost cause at some point, but your parents didn’t give up on you”.

Despite Postecoglou’s stance, sources do understand he is a man under pressure and will be asked to explain their dire form under him and with the prospect of his removal very much possible.

Nottingham Forest latest: Elliot Anderson transfer truths; Brazilian forward eyed

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has come clean on his side’s decision to let Elliot Anderson move to the City Ground last year, with the midfielder now a regular in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and with very clear concerns that the Magpies made a big mistake in allowing him to leave.

Anderson’s form has since alerted Manchester United, while talk of a return to St James’ Park also lingers and with truths emerging over claims that his deal includes a buy-back clause.

Elsewhere, Edu Gaspar is understood to be tracking an exciting Brazilian winger, though TEAMtalk can reveal that they face competition from a Premier League rival for his signature.

Sources have also revealed to our transfer insider, Fraser Fletcher, that a top Al-Ittihad star is also drawing admiring glances from Forest, despite only making the move to Saudi Arabia over the summer.
